Small Business Highlight: Pink Elephant Coffee Roasters

August 19, 2018 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

Sunday morning (hopefully) means you get to enjoy a lazy cup of coffee or three before the activities begin! If you’re looking for a spot to enjoy just that, on a beautiful morning like this one on Historic Main Street in Park City, look no further than Pink Elephant Coffee Shop.

You’ll find Pink Elephant Coffee Roasters on the 2nd floor!

This shop, which serves small-batch artisan coffee, roasted in Utah, is located on the 2nd floor of 509 Main Street. The building is structured like a true local business collective. Walk into the Prospect store (Billy’s Barbershop is in there, too!) and go directly up the stairs.

The coffee shop upstairs is cozy, clean, and bright, with a fridge full

Land Juicery is part of the local business collective at 509 Main, along with Pink Elephant, Billy’s Barbershop, and Prospect.

of Land Juicery juices (Pink Elephant partners with them and they share the space), items from a local bakery, Ritual Chocolate on the shelves, two high-top tables at which you can relax and sip your coffee, and a good old-fashioned coffee counter, replete with those fabulous blue mugs.

It turns out we’re not the only ones who love the blue mugs. The (wonderfully friendly) barista was quite used to people snapping multiple pictures of the mugs for Instagram purposes and had his answer ready when we asked where we could get our hands on them: “Acme & Co., but the color is back ordered.”

Every inch of this small space is maximized.

Pink Elephant serves single-origin green coffee beans, roasts them in small batches and makes them into drinks with meticulous attention to detail. This is no exaggeration – we ordered a decaf Americano and the simple drink was *perfectly* executed; the shot was weighed, and the conscientious crafting was all done with a friendly smile and engaging conversation.

So what’s with that name? Here’s how they explain on their website:

“The great author Jack London writes about seeing pink elephants when one has over-imbibed. Referred to as delirium tremens (Latin for the “trembling madness”), we feel this way when we’ve had too much coffee … or too little.”

No surprise that this color is back ordered.

As if that’s not enough to adore them, here’s why we really love this local business – it sources fresh, high-quality single-origin coffee from farms in the coffee-growing world. The owners choose green coffees from estates, small farms, responsible cooperatives, micro-lots, or from growers who are certified organic or Fair Trade, and in so doing, provide a sustainable livelihood for growers and their communities. Not only that, a portion of Pink Elephant Coffee sales goes to preserving and protecting wildlife and open lands in the west. It’s a pleasure to support a local business which does everything it can to support its own network.

Nonprofit Highlight: I Want To Ride My Bicycle

August 9, 2018 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

Summit Bike Club & Little Bellas

Tour of Utah is full speed ahead, and we’ve got biking on the brain. The race, which is one of the top professional cycling events in North America, ends Sunday afternoon on Historic Main Street. A large part of the Tour of Utah’s goal is to communicate “how individual attention to personal health and physical activity at every age will lead to a stronger, healthier society.”

In light of that, we thought we’d start cheering early – for the nonprofits dedicated to supporting biking efforts for very similar reasons right here in Park City. So, without hitting the brakes, allow us to introduce you to Little Bellas and Summit Bike Club.

Summit Bike Club
Skills, safety, and sportsmanship of cycling

The Summit Bike Club works to keep kids active and outdoors on two wheels. The group also works to educate athletes on skills, safety, and sportsmanship. They have a number of programs created with the goal to develop lifelong cyclists – and to grow the sport of mountain biking.

Their core values include integrity, respect, perseverance, leadership, and accountability, and through these, they cultivate and develop elite athletes – but also lifelong casual athletes. It was founded in 2012, with 12 athletes, with funding support from the Park City Community Foundation. It has grown steadily in the years since, with additional programs and the formation of an elite team.

The group has been awarded USA Cycling’s Mountain Bike Club of the Year award each year since 2015! Now, the group’s programming can be found not only in Park City, but in Davis and Logan, Utah, and in Colorado, Idaho, and Texas, too.

Little Bellas
Mentoring on Mountain Bikes

The National Children’s Bureau reports that boys cycle nearly 6 times as much as girls. That translates to 138 miles/year for boys and just 24 miles/year for girls. Little Bellas is an organization (based in Vermont, with a Park City chapter) which may help even the scales. It’s a mountain bike organization with the goal to help young women realize their potential through cycling. In the last ten years – nearly 3,000 girls have participated in the program – many of whom have continued on through the program to build active adult female rider groups.

The nonprofit was formed in 2007, with a focus on girls ages 7 through 16 – the ages where self-esteem can be most at risk for girls. Support and respect were keystone values, and an all-woman mentor community created a safe space for participation. The program encompasses skills, yes, but skills on *and* off the bike. It also tackles the topic of nutrition – and using food as a source of fuel.

Small Business Highlight: Ritual Chocolate & Cafe

August 5, 2018 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

Park City and the Chocolate Factory

With more awards than you can count on both hands (including 9 of them this year at the Academy of Chocolate – if anyone would know, it’s them, right?), Ritual Chocolate is already a winner in the eyes of professional-chocolate-judge-people (technical term). Its products are also winners with a totally different crowd – Park City residents and visitors.

Located in the heart of the Iron Horse District in Park City, the Ritual Chocolate Cafe (which also houses its chocolate factory – yes, you heard me, Park City has its very own chocolate factory!) is a magnet for locals all day long. The heavy brick exterior of the building juxtaposes the clean, light, and bright interior, which has a smattering of tables and a wall of shelves filled with, what else, Ritual chocolate bars! And, best of all, in front of each bar available, you’ll find a little pot with complimentary samples. This may or may not be one of our main reasons for visiting.

The Sourcing

While you’re exploring, you’ll see massive windows into the chocolate factory, where you can actually peek in on the process of creating chocolate, which verges on a spiritual experience for some people. The chocolate is not just *any* chocolate – most bars are made with just two ingredients: cacao and cane sugar. And because cacao grows best when its forest is healthy, Ritual works hard to source only from farms which practice organic methods or who are certified organic. Not only that – the owners of Ritual ensure the growers are compensated well above world pricing.

Photo courtesy: Ritual Chocolate Factory & Cafe

With that cacao, Ritual Chocolate handcrafts small batch, bean-to-bar chocolate in a mix of classic European methods and modern American style. It was founded 2010 by Robbie Stout and Anna Davies, with the mission to revive the focus on quality. Another motto is to “improve the quality of life through chocolate.” And they’re not just talking about making consumers happy – as you read above, they aim to do this by supporting the people who grow the raw ingredients they use.

How to Enjoy

You’ll find the cafe & factory at 1105 Iron Horse Drive in Park City – locals are familiar with the area, but visitors may have to GPS it. There’s also a chocolate and coffee bar inside the Park City Whole Foods location – which is a bit easier to locate. Wherever you go to enjoy it, you’ll find coffee from another local purveyor, Pink Elephant Coffee Roasters, and

Photo courtesy: Pink Elephant Coffee Roasters

options on the menu for drinks made with chocolate! Trust us, this chocolate milk is unlike any you can buy in a grocery store.

The Cafe has a small shop where you can buy chocolate (of course) but also a branded camp mug and some cool (really!) branded t-shirts. You can also shop for most products online.

It’s Sunday – and this is one of our favorite small businesses in Park City – so go and grab a cup of coffee, sit and relax on their outdoor patio, and enjoy some simple, authentic and well-sourced chocolate! Sunday Funday, indeed.

Park City Nonprofit Highlight: Park City Institute

July 18, 2018 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

PARK CITY INSTITUTE
Park City Institute, originally known as the Park City Performing Arts Foundation, was founded in 1998, to bring world-class performances and new ideas to the Park City community (photo courtesy: Park City Institute). This year is its 20th year of doing just that – it finds incredibly thought-provoking speakers and delightful performers and puts them in front of our community at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Center stage.

PCI’s concert series, now in its 15th consecutive year, was a study in problem-solving after Deer Valley threw a huge curveball this spring. After 14 years of holding its events at the Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheatre, DV informed Park City Institute its  St. Regis Big Stars, Bright Night Concerts Series would need to find a new home – just months before the 15th season was to begin.

An orderly scramble ensued, and a solution was manifested: pop-up concert events! The rest of this season’s shows will be held at the Quinn’s Junction Recreation Complex* (Grace Potter was held at City Park). The challenges didn’t stop there, however, as the location didn’t have parking – or any nearby concession options. PCI kept leaping those hurdles and came up with free luxury shuttles for those who park at the Eccles Center at Park City High School and Richardson Flat. And, for the ever-important food, they coordinated their brilliant Food Truck Court. (*UPDATE: On Friday, July 27, Park City City Council approved the request to move all remaining summer concerts to City Park; all other details remain the same.)

The Riverhorse Provisions Food Truck is pretty darn cute. Photo courtesy: Park City Institute

FOOD TRUCK COURT
If you ask us, the quality of the selection at the Food Truck Court alone is a draw to attend these PCI pop-ups! Check out who parks at each party:

Riverhorse Provisions
You can pre-order picnics for the Big Stars, Bright Nights events from Riverhorse Provisions’ adorable food truck (well, really, for any occasion, but you can pick them up on-site at PCI’s pop-ups). Choose from the Southern Basket with fried chicken and creamy macaroni salad, the Falafel Box with falafel and tabbouleh, the Seafood Pack with shrimp cocktail and pasta salad – we could go on and on, but don’t make us because seriously, we’re getting hungry.

Best lobstah roll in Park City… and beyond! Photo courtesy: Bubba Brown/Park Record

Freshie’s Lobster Co.
Park-City born-and-based Freshie’s is the home of the best lobster roll in the world, and those lobster rolls are up for grabs at each Big Stars, Bright Nights concert! The rolls come in three sizes, the Tourist, for those who only want 2 oz of fresh Maine lobster (just curious whether that size has ever been sold…), the Real Mainah, with 4 oz., and the XL, with 5 oz. of the good stuff. Ayuh.

Spencer’s Smokin’ Grill
Now, if you’re more in the mood for BBQ – head on over to Spencer’s. Pulled Pork, Pulled Chicken, BBQ Beans, Dirty Rice, Tri-Tip, and, of course, Cornbread can be found here. Few things could be more fun than a full rack at a concert.

Praise Cheezus Gourmet Grilled Cheese
This one is pretty self-explanatory – toasty, gooey, delicious grilled cheese! From savory cheezus choices (The Old Testament concoction has gouda, cheddar, swiss, and garlic cream cheese spread), to sweet cheezus (The Trinity has brie, triple berry compote, and wild honey) – these grilled cheese sandwiches are practically a spiritual experience.

In formation.

Wasatch Creamery Ice Cream Company
Speaking of spiritual experiences, whatever you do while you’re at the events, *do not* miss the Wasatch Creamery ice cream bike. Flavors like Salted Oreo (do not even come near us with that because we cannot stop eating it), Lavender Blueberry, Peaches-n-Buttermilk, Peaches-n-Bourbon, Summer Strawberry (the most fresh thing we’ve ever tasted in our entire life), and Mango Sorbet, along with TONS of others, with more constantly being beta tested, are available at this station while supplies last.

Of course, attendees are always welcome to pack picnics, snacks, and beverages (you’re asked to avoid glassware for safety reasons), but with these world-class options *right there,* why bother?

THE SHOWS
Upcoming shows include Monday’s Chris Blue concert, Corinne Bailey Rae, and The Wallflowers. If you’d like to attend any of these upcoming events, you can buy tickets online, call or visit the Eccles Center Box Office (435-655-3114), or buy tickets at the on-site box office on the afternoon of the event.

SUPPORT
Mission Statement: To enrich the community by providing innovative experiences that entertain, educate and illuminate.
