By this time the last year, it had already snowed a few times. This year, we’re enjoying a bit of a blissful autumn. Our trees have faded into subdued golden shades, it’s chilly enough in the mornings for a hearty, heavy sweater but warms up with the wonderful sunshine throughout the day, and you’ve likely had a few pumpkin spice lattes (we won’t tell).

This weekend could be considered a quiet one by Park City standards (though there is still much to do, as ever, in our fabulous ski town). So grab your PSL, pull on your sweater (but be sure to wear short sleeves underneath!), and get out there to enjoy our community!

SATURDAY, September 29

Annual Community Fall Cleanup Event
9 AM – 12 PM
Winter Sports School | Park City High School | City Park 

This morning, join the “Pride in our Community” Fall Cleanup Event, hosted by Recycle Utah, Park City Municipal and Summit County.

You are welcome to drop in for the cleanup – teams will be dispatched from three spots – the Winter Sports School, the Park City High School and City Park (by the Gazebo).

You’re asked to bring gloves and a pickup stick/grabber – if you happen to have one. Bags and reflective vests will be provided.

  China Bridge Parking Lot

If you want to build community in another way today – you can join in a local public art project! Emily Herr, the mural artist who was selected for the China Bridge Parking Garage project, is in Park City this month, and community help is critical to the completion of the murals, titled WILD CITY.

Morning sessions are 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and afternoon sessions are from 1 – 5 p.m. Snacks and drinks are provided – to learn more and sign up to paint, click here.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Today – a free hazardous waste collection from Recycle Utah. Bring your paints, varnishes, solvents, motor oil, antifreeze, batteries, and gasoline to the Cabriolet parking lot at the Canyons base.

Body and Soul
Kimball Art Center
Through November 4

Never in history have we (ok, some of us) been more inundated with images – at least from a social media perspective. Landscapes, pictures of home design and architecture, candids (does such a thing even exist anymore?) but especially the new self-portrait – those supernumerary selfies – are shared and consumed relentlessly across social channels.

Kimball Art Center’s new exhibit, Body and Soul, features 24 Utah-based artists and explores the lasting power of what you could call the “legit-art selfie” genre across contemporary painting, photography, text-based installations, and more. From the Kimball Art Center website:

“Established tropes are both embraced and reinvented, presenting diverse approaches to portraiture as a means of commemoration, reflection, and social critique. From faithful likeness to fantasy and fracture, the power of portraits is that they are about more than what we look like; they reveal who we are.”

Admission is free; the exhibit will run through November 4.

Improvised Fairy Tales

A family show – Park City Improv is back to present your favorite fairy tales in ways that have never been seen before and never will be again. Catch the fun at 3 o’clock this afternoon at Park City Library.

Once Upon a Playground Exhibit
Park City Museum

All those playground items we loved so much and injured ourselves on frequently as children – you know, metal slides, jungle gyms, seesaws, and the circle of misery known as merry-go-rounds  – have somehow been relegated to artifacts of our childhood.

And, not only are they part of our personal histories, they’re examples of our country’s cultural (and industrial) design heritage. From the Park City Museum website:

“Once Upon a Playground offers a visual tribute to these vanishing playgrounds of our past, celebrating their place in American culture and the collective memories of generations.

The exhibit is co-curated by Brenda Biondo, author of Once Upon a Playground: A Celebration of Classic American Playgrounds, 1920–1975 (University Press of New England, 2014), and Carol Johnson, recently retired curator of photography at the Library of Congress, the exhibition combines contemporary photographs of classic equipment, vintage images of playground scenes from the Library of Congress’ collections, and images from period playground catalogs and other ephemera. By bringing together these diverse sources, the exhibition highlights a playground vernacular that developed over decades, while providing historical context and cultural insight.”

The Art and Science of Arachnids
Swaner Preserve & EcoCenter

The largest arachnid exhibit in the United States is right here in our backyard through December!

The exhibit guides visitors to explore connections between arachnids and literature, art, folklore, paleontology, science, and history. You’ll see 100 live arachnids (!) and experience hands-on activities – hopefully, the live arachnids are not the hands-on activities, but you’ll have to go see it in order to find out.

This Matchstick Productions’ 2018 ski film is said to present a “first-of-its-kind experience.” From the Park City Film Series:

“The concept was spearheaded by a talented group of hard-charging women who wanted to disrupt the male-dominated ski film formula. This isn’t your typical “Women can shred too” film, this is a kick-ass ski film that just happens to feature as many women as men. Skiing isn’t exclusionary, true fun in the mountains can be shared equally by everyone.” Wine and beer are available for purchase. Tonight’s show is at 8; you can catch it tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Hoppy Hour
6 – 10 PM

Throughout the summer, the Summit Land Conservancy leads guided hikes in Park City’s preserved open spaces to collect hops – one of the key ingredients in beer. Even if you didn’t tag along for hops hunting, you can still reap the benefits at the annual Hoppy Hour party at Wasatch Brew Pub tonight, as they release the “Clothing Hoptional” brew made from the harvest. The $20 entry fee gets you appetizers, two drinks, and entry into an opportunity drawing. Grab tickets here.

Fall Open Barn Days

It’s an alpaca extravaganza! Bring your camera and spend some time visiting the beautiful Blue Moon Ranch alpacas for the 15th Annual Open Barn Days.
The ranch’s walking paths will be open to all who wish to stroll around, and there will be an assortment of alpaca items for sale.

Three Identical Strangers

Our jaws dropped during this documentary more times than we can count on two hands – it’s no wonder it was the winner of the Grand Jury Documentary Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. “Three Identical Strangers” follows the unbelievable true story of three young men who are reunited by astonishing coincidence after being born identical triplets, separated at birth, and adopted by three different families. Believe us – that’s just the beginning…

Saturday Morning Nature Walk

We are nearing the end of this seasonal Saturday walk. Grab a coffee and join the guided group to explore the wetlands at Swaner Preserve. The guide comes armed with information about the wetlands, native plants, and all the animal species you’ll see as you walk through the Preserve. This weekly event ends September 30.

The North Face Endurance Challenge
September 22 & 23

North Face isn’t joking when they call this an Endurance Challenge. This specific race starts at the highest elevation within the North America series – at 7,000 feet – but it also CLIMBS to the highest elevation of 10,000 feet. The race doesn’t pull any punches – after you crest the first HUGE hill, which begins immediately, by the way, you’ll make your way along the Wasatch Back while you navigate a mix of single- and double-track trails, ski runs, and various dirt roads at Park City Mountain.

Human Curling
 5 – 6:30 PM @ Park City Ice Arena

In normal curling, you slide stones across the ice and onto a target. In HUMAN curling – you slide… what else – yourself! And if that doesn’t sound good enough – this event is FREE. You can register online or by calling 435.615.5707. Wear warm clothing, a helmet, and rubber-soled shoes – you must be at least 12 years old to participate.

Scarecrow Festival
2 – 4 PM @ McPolin Farm

Did you know you can create a scarecrow to be featured at the festival? Join the fun at McPolin Farm to build your very own scarecrow – which will be on display through October 19th.

The event includes pumpkin painting, face painting, stuffing for your scarecrow (along with the cross to hang it upon), games, and cookies.

You do need to bring all the items to build your scarecrow – including a head, clothing, safety pins, shoes, props, scissors and any other accessories you think you’ll need.

The inaugural Brunch at Altitude at Summit Watch Plaza, hosted by Park City Magazine, is said to be a “celebration of the season and our favorite meal: brunch!”

The air is cool and crisp in the mornings and the skies are that brilliant blue hue that starts to show up in autumn… In Park City, that means it’s time to get ready for Autumn Aloft! The annual event happens this weekend, with various activities scattered around town. UP, UP AND AWAY

The Autumn Aloft balloon festival started more than 30 years ago and, with dozens of radiantly-colored balloons taking flight, it quickly became a must-see event (if you’ve ever experienced it, you know why!).

After a two-decade break, the event was resurrected in 2014 in its latest iteration. Thousands of people flock to the North 40 (behind Treasure Mountain Jr. High, off of Kearns Blvd.) to enjoy the Saturday and Sunday morning launches.

You may be familiar with the balloons (it’s hard to miss them, after all), but did you know there is also an up-close-and-personal Autumn Aloft event on Main Street to enjoy? We didn’t either. Take a look!

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS 

Morning Launch
Saturday, September 15 @ 8:00 am — You likely know all about this one. 24 hot air balloons in a dazzling array of colors, shapes, and sizes will take flight.

It’s best to arrive by about 7:45 a.m. to get positioned and to see the magic of watching the balloons fill up with air, load on their passengers, and lift off.

Make sure your batteries are charged on your phone or camera because you are going to want to take about 300 pictures.

If you want to share on social, there’s a photo contest being held by Pictureline, one of the event’s main sponsors. To participate, simply use the hashtag #pictureline along with the hashtag #autumnaloft in your posts. Pictureline even has cameras for attendees to borrow during Saturday’s launch; more on that a bit lower down.

There will also be free coffee and hot chocolate available, courtesy of Wells Fargo. Whatever you do, be sure to dress warmly – like we said, it’s getting chilly in the mornings!

After the launch, look for the RE/MAX balloon – they will take a number of people on tethered rides (the balloon is tethered to the ground, so you up just enough to experience a little balloon ride for yourself). There will be a sign-up sheet, and the opportunity is first-come, first served.

Evening Candlestick on Main Street
Saturday, September 15 @ 8:00 pm – This event is COOL. Head to Historic Main Street on Saturday evening, and you won’t be able to miss the setup.

Look for them between 4th and 5th Streets. There will be barricades up around balloon baskets, sans balloons, but with the fires burning bright! 

 

This is the annual “Candlestick” on Main Street. The burners are what keep the hot air balloons afloat, you can see and hear the flames from afar during the morning launches, but you’ll see them in a whole new way during this Saturday night experience, surrounded by the picturesque Main Street shops and restaurants.

To add to the fun, there will be a live D.J. and helium balloons so the kiddos can take a piece of the action home with them.

Sunday, September 16 @ 8:00 am – Second verse, similar to the first. Fewer people streaming onto the North 40 to see the balloons – but also be prepared for fewer amenities (e.g., no free coffee or hot cocoa on Sunday). But don’t let that deter you! Fill up your travel mug and zip on over here to enjoy the balloons – fewere people usually means better pictures!

Speaking of which -all Autumn Aloft attendees are encouraged to participate in Pictureline’s annual Autumn Aloft photo contest! Three winners will win a Benro Travel Tripod and a Pictureline gift card for $50, $100, or $150.

Pictureline will be on-site for Saturday’s launch – and you can borrow some fabulous Nikon loaner gear! Try to bring your own SD card so you can hang onto your pictures. Simply head to the Pictureline tent as you walk toward the North 40 from the Treasure Mountain Jr. High parking lot.

PARKING & LOGISTICS

Saturday and Sunday’s launch events will take place on the North 40 Playing Fields, directly behind TMJH. You may park at Park City High School – including at the Eccles Center. No pets, smoking or drones at Autumn Aloft – and the organization reminds us that hot air balloon events are subject to weather conditions including wind speeds. Wind conditions that may impact a hot air balloon vary based on venue, wind direction, and gusts.

Small Business Highlight: Mountain Town Olive Oil

No matter the weather, when you step up the stairs and into Mountain Town Olive Oil’s new space on Historic Main Street, it feels like walking into a cozy home on a blustery day, and you can’t help but want to relax and stay a spell.

Head on up the stairs to discover Mountain Town Olive Oil.

Wherever the walls aren’t coated in a cheerful yellow, you’ll see warm, exposed brick, with accents of rough-hewn wood and metallic industrial touches throughout the store.

Most surfaces are pleasantly cluttered with Mountain Town Olive Oil (MTOO) offerings and accoutrements, select local products like Park City Granola Co., V’s Bees pure raw honey, and more.

As you make your way across the store, do yourself a favor and stop for the sample of the day. Owner Jessica McCleary loves providing these as part of the olive oil experience. “People can engage with it before they buy and know that they love the product they are taking home.”

Adjacent to the samples, you’ll find row after row of olive oil and vinegar selections. Olive oils range from traditional to flavor-infused; the vinegars, from dark to fruity – to white.

The olive oil and vinegar products are stored in shiny tankards called “fustis.” The fusti system not only cuts back on storage space, allowing Jessica to dedicate her back area to community education (more on that later), it also keeps the business green. Reusable packaging is used at every opportunity, and customers who bring bottles in to refill from the fustis are offered a special discount.

MTOO is in the process of joining Recycle Utah’s green program, which guides local businesses working to craft sustainability plans and to help them increase existing green endeavors.

Along the back brick wall is where the spices are kept – there are notecards with descriptions, and if you are looking for guidance for a specific flavor or dish, don’t hesitate to ask for help!

RECIPES & COMMUNITY EDUCATION

Mountain Town Olive Oil’s mission is “…to provide our customers with the best olive oils and vinegars the planet has to offer,” but the service doesn’t stop there.

Not only are there cookbooks available inside the store, there are myriad recipes posted on the website. Appetizers, breakfast, brunch, dessert, gluten-free, marinades, vegan, sides, and so on. If you’re anything like we are, you’ll be clicking on the recipe for that fall favorite – pumpkin bread!

The Fresh Drizzle Blog takes MTOO awareness a step further, with posts like foods to eat to hydrate skin, to five things to know when purchasing olive oil, even a cautionary post about how to make sure you’re getting real olive oil!

Bring your friends and grab a seat!

Jessica feels very strongly about also providing face-to-face education about how to create food using MTOO’s products – but not because it’s so complicated. Just the opposite, in fact – the classes, from Olive Oil 101 class to the Next Course series, help people understand that it can be incredibly simple to put a healthy, flavorful meal together, whether you’re cooking for one or a dozen.

Classes and gatherings are held in the back of the store, where high-top tables and chairs, along with a demo cooking space, create a comfy, intimate area in which to enjoy learning about the subject at hand.

Sign us up for the yoga + champagne party!

The learning space, however, can be what you make of it. Jessica tells us she’s fond of hosting private wine tasting events — and would love to have a regular yoga-and-champagne-tastings. HOURS & LOCATION 

Mountain Town Olive Oil relocated to Historic Main Streed in July. You’ll find the store and the community class space upstairs at 613 Main Street. Hours vary seasonally, but you can usually find them open from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 12 – 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Jessica is proud of the consistency of experience customers have at MTOO; she loves that clients come in, have a great time, and that visitors often make the store a destination during their vacations. It is, she says, an honor to be part of that.

It’s the unofficial end to summer this weekend, with Labor Day/Miners’ Day and the start of September. School is in full swing, so books are on the brain. You can stock up at the Friends of the Library book sale, which starts tomorrow. There are also a ton of opportunities to hear live music – and an entire day packed full of fun come Monday.

It’s already the last Friday in August – summer, where did you go?! – and that means it’s time for the Last Friday Gallery Stroll! Put on some comfy shoes and head on out – many of our community galleries hold artist receptions, demonstrations, and other fun events. American Idol: Live!

See your favorite American Idol contestants (well, the top 11 finalists, anyway) sing at DeJoria Center tonight. The showcase features the former contestants singing both as solo acts and as an ensemble. Tickets are still available for this show.

The Egyptian Theatre

Artist and activist Peter Yarrow returns to the Egyptian Theatre through September 2nd. His songwriting has produced songs (for Peter, Paul & Mary) like “Puff, The Magic Dragon,” “Day Is Done,” “The Great Mandala” and “Light One Candle.” Shows are at 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday; 6 p.m. show on Sunday.

Deer Valley Concert Series: Gov’t Mule

The new Gov’t Mule album, “Revolution Come… Revolution Go,”  was released June 9. Known for “cleverly-crafted songs, intelligent lyrical commentary, and downright incendiary playing,” Gov’t Mule should be a fun Park City event.

Mountain Bike Race

Some of the country’s strongest endurance mountain bike racers will be riding the best trails Park City has to offer. This is a true point to point race, with riders rolling on single track for more than 90% of the race, for a total distance of about 75 miles – with around 12,000’ of climbing! The route, which takes between 7 and 12 *hours* to finish, sends riders through both ski resorts, and the organizers say the race is guaranteed to please both a regular trail-rider and out-of-town visitors. You knew there was live music at Park Silly – but did you know there are TWO stages? One at the bottom of Main Street, and the other at the Farmers Market at 5th Street! This weekend, catch Scott Klismith, Park City grad, science educator, and lyricist.

On the Main Stage, you can catch BroBand – two brothers ages 9 and 13. Kellen plays guitar while little brother Blake jumps from piano to guitar to ukulele. At 2 p.m., Patwa Reggae Band picks it up, with members from America, England, and Jamaica, TPRB creates an original blend of Park City reggae.

Jason Mraz has a sound that you can’t help but to bop along to while smiling. He brings his positive message and soulful, folk-pop sound to the Deer Valley Concert Series on Monday evening. This four-session course teaches the basics of nutrition to help improve and maintain health and well-being.  For $60, participants learn about the following topics:

This film is part of the Made in Utah Film Series. From the Park City Film Series website: “‘Art+Belief’ follows the journey of Trevor Southey, a gay Mormon artist from Africa who dreams of becoming a modern-day Michelangelo. At its core, Art+Belief is about the balancing act between individual vision and religious conformity and the unlikely possibilities of reconciliation. These artists show us that we each have a unique spiritual journey that can flourish regardless of our religious allegiances.” There will be a Q & A with director Nathan Florence after the screening, which is free to the community.

Put this one on your calendar! There has been so much buzz about “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” we’ll be surprised if there’s an open seat left for any one of the screenings. The film takes an intimate look at Fred Rogers, known to most of us as the zip-up-cardigan-wearing Mr. Rogers. This emotional film goes into the heart of the quietly revolutionary genius who was Mr. Rogers. Shows are at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Hike for Hunger
Saturday, September 8
1 – 6 PM 

This annual event raises awareness about hunger issues locally – and globally. Each year, Park City’s Christian Center serves thousands of residents in Summit and Wasatch counties through local food pantries. The Christian Center also delivers healthy snacks to over 350 local students each month as part of the Snacks in Backpacks program.

Small Business Highlight: Pink Elephant Coffee Roasters

Sunday morning (hopefully) means you get to enjoy a lazy cup of coffee or three before the activities begin! If you’re looking for a spot to enjoy just that, on a beautiful morning like this one on Historic Main Street in Park City, look no further than Pink Elephant Coffee Shop.

You’ll find Pink Elephant Coffee Roasters on the 2nd floor!

This shop, which serves small-batch artisan coffee, roasted in Utah, is located on the 2nd floor of 509 Main Street. The building is structured like a true local business collective. Walk into the Prospect store (Billy’s Barbershop is in there, too!) and go directly up the stairs.

of Land Juicery juices (Pink Elephant partners with them and they share the space), items from a local bakery, Ritual Chocolate on the shelves, two high-top tables at which you can relax and sip your coffee, and a good old-fashioned coffee counter, replete with those fabulous blue mugs.

It turns out we’re not the only ones who love the blue mugs. The (wonderfully friendly) barista was quite used to people snapping multiple pictures of the mugs for Instagram purposes and had his answer ready when we asked where we could get our hands on them: “Acme & Co., but the color is back ordered.”

 

Every inch of this small space is maximized.

Pink Elephant serves single-origin green coffee beans, roasts them in small batches and makes them into drinks with meticulous attention to detail. This is no exaggeration – we ordered a decaf Americano and the simple drink was *perfectly* executed; the shot was weighed, and the conscientious crafting was all done with a friendly smile and engaging conversation.

So what’s with that name? Here’s how they explain on their website:

“The great author Jack London writes about seeing pink elephants when one has over-imbibed. Referred to as delirium tremens (Latin for the “trembling madness”), we feel this way when we’ve had too much coffee … or too little.”

No surprise that this color is back ordered.

As if that’s not enough to adore them, here’s why we really love this local business – it sources fresh, high-quality single-origin coffee from farms in the coffee-growing world. The owners choose green coffees from estates, small farms, responsible cooperatives, micro-lots, or from growers who are certified organic or Fair Trade, and in so doing, provide a sustainable livelihood for growers and their communities. Not only that, a portion of Pink Elephant Coffee sales goes to preserving and protecting wildlife and open lands in the west. It’s a pleasure to support a local business which does everything it can to support its own network.
