Small Business Highlight: Pink Elephant Coffee Roasters

August 19, 2018 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

Sunday morning (hopefully) means you get to enjoy a lazy cup of coffee or three before the activities begin! If you’re looking for a spot to enjoy just that, on a beautiful morning like this one on Historic Main Street in Park City, look no further than Pink Elephant Coffee Shop.

You’ll find Pink Elephant Coffee Roasters on the 2nd floor!

This shop, which serves small-batch artisan coffee, roasted in Utah, is located on the 2nd floor of 509 Main Street. The building is structured like a true local business collective. Walk into the Prospect store (Billy’s Barbershop is in there, too!) and go directly up the stairs.

The coffee shop upstairs is cozy, clean, and bright, with a fridge full

Land Juicery is part of the local business collective at 509 Main, along with Pink Elephant, Billy’s Barbershop, and Prospect.

of Land Juicery juices (Pink Elephant partners with them and they share the space), items from a local bakery, Ritual Chocolate on the shelves, two high-top tables at which you can relax and sip your coffee, and a good old-fashioned coffee counter, replete with those fabulous blue mugs.

It turns out we’re not the only ones who love the blue mugs. The (wonderfully friendly) barista was quite used to people snapping multiple pictures of the mugs for Instagram purposes and had his answer ready when we asked where we could get our hands on them: “Acme & Co., but the color is back ordered.”

Every inch of this small space is maximized.

Pink Elephant serves single-origin green coffee beans, roasts them in small batches and makes them into drinks with meticulous attention to detail. This is no exaggeration – we ordered a decaf Americano and the simple drink was *perfectly* executed; the shot was weighed, and the conscientious crafting was all done with a friendly smile and engaging conversation.

So what’s with that name? Here’s how they explain on their website:

“The great author Jack London writes about seeing pink elephants when one has over-imbibed. Referred to as delirium tremens (Latin for the “trembling madness”), we feel this way when we’ve had too much coffee … or too little.”

No surprise that this color is back ordered.

As if that’s not enough to adore them, here’s why we really love this local business – it sources fresh, high-quality single-origin coffee from farms in the coffee-growing world. The owners choose green coffees from estates, small farms, responsible cooperatives, micro-lots, or from growers who are certified organic or Fair Trade, and in so doing, provide a sustainable livelihood for growers and their communities. Not only that, a portion of Pink Elephant Coffee sales goes to preserving and protecting wildlife and open lands in the west. It’s a pleasure to support a local business which does everything it can to support its own network.

Nonprofit Highlight: KPCW

August 16, 2018 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

Life in Park City is different – in a good way – for so many reasons. We’re nestled in the mountains, surrounded by the world’s best ski resorts and more than 400 miles of award-winning trails… it goes on and on. Near the top of that list is the fact that we have three extremely dedicated, hyper-local news services, which provide our community with news, information, and events. We’re lucky to have KPCW, the Park Record, and Park City TV,  in our ears, at our fingertips and within eyeball-distance whenever we need them. The nonprofit entity among these gems is KPCW, the local NPR affiliate located right here on Swede Alley in Park City. It’s an unassuming building, located right above a liquor store, as afternoon host of The Local View (and Park City institution) Randy Barton likes to point out and joke about during broadcasts. All we’re saying is, if he knows you and you go in there during his broadcast, you might have a whole listening audience learning about it.

You can see the studio from the street, and it looks especially cozy with its warm lights burning bright in the early morning hours, when Leslie Thatcher is manning the booth for Local News Hour, or when our small town is coated in a thick layer of snow under storm clouds. And while the station’s coverage is familiar – it’s definitely taken a harder-edged approach as it works to provide the most, best news to the community.

MISSION

On its website, KPCW lists its mission as “to serve Summit and Wasatch Counties with local news, information, entertainment and emergency alerts through its broadcast signal and digital media platforms.” And here’s the reason we like KPCW so very much: the station is also committed to using its power help other nonprofit organizations in our community succeed. And do that – it does. KPCW provides interviews and airs more than 26,000 (yes, 26 THOUSAND) free public service announcements each year to promote nonprofit events and programming.

KPCW first hit the airways on July 2 of 1980, and you can find it on your dial at 91.7 FM. The station also live streams its programs to listeners – who listen on six out of seven continents. Can’t stream live or tune in? KPCW has been upping its website coverage (reporters post full story and interview transcriptions now!) social media game. Find them on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to find content similar to their on-air services: news, information, and entertainment.

PROGRAMMING

Each day, KPCW programs five hours of in-depth local news and interviews – and works relentlessly to bring you, specifically, reports from city and county government meetings. Of course, everyone knows, too, to turn on KPCW for up-to-the minute broadcasts and information on local emergencies, road conditions and weather. You can find the daily schedule HERE.

The schedule also includes National Public Radio programming. You’ll hear NPR’s Morning Edition, Weekend Edition, Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! and TED Radio Hour, along with World News Service from the British Broadcasting Corporation (overnight through 5 a.m.).

And throughout the rest of the day, an expanded music rotation features thousands of songs from the 1970’s through today. These songs are spun by *more than **50** volunteer DJ’s, some who have been with the station for more than 30 years. KPCW calls its music format “SOSNSCSB: Something Old, Something New, Something Covered, Something Blues.” Ha.

SERVICES

KPCW Underwriters – These are the local businesses who understand the importance of local public radio and support KPCW in significant ways. The Colony is proud to support KPCW as an underwriter of the station!*

Public Service Announcements (PSAs) – Community programs and events put on by local non-profits. Any and all 501(c)3 non-profits may have up to three (3) PSAs run at a time for free. Each PSA will be read by our DJs and news hosts for up to two weeks.

Lost & Found – Submit your lost or found item to be read on air for free. Entries will run for 7 days, or when you let us know of the reunion, whichever comes first. (These are our personal favorites. Nothing beats hearing Randy do the lost-and-founds each afternoon.

Event Calendar – Events submitted by non-profits from around town. Free to submit.
*We pulled this info directly from the website – couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

EVENTS & SUPPORT

This Friday, KPCW is kicking off its Summer 2018 Pledge Drive with a complimentary community event called Cole Sport Back Alley Bash. Held at Park City’s iconic Town Lift Plaza off of Historic Main Street, adjacent to The Bridge Café, KPCW brings in live entertainment for adults *and* kiddos, plus food and beverages available for purchase. All proceeds, of course, are invested directly back into the station.

The event is a fun one each summer, warm-but-usually-not-too-hot, catching up with old friends while enjoying whiskey lemonades from High West Whiskey, and watching the kids and puppies run around at the base of the Town Lift Bridge. Oh, and we buried the lede: KPCW will announce the winner for an opportunity drawing. The grand prize this year is practically an all-expenses-paid vacation: three nights for FOUR people of glamping in a luxury tent at Conestoga Ranch at Bear Lake, including breakfast and dinner each day. You can buy tickets for the drawing and discover more information about the event here.

SUMMER PLEDGE DRIVE & ONLINE AUCTION

The Back Alley Bash brings us directly to the Summer Pledge Drive. The drive is a bi-annual occurrence, one is held in winter, too, and a superhuman undertaking. The station is loaded to the gills with volunteers and special guests in-studio and the air reverberates from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. with ringing phones, a cowbell, and, for the really big donations, a gong.

It’s a blast to participate in, and it’s the way KPCW raises most of its funding for the year. To donate, call 435-649-9004, or donate online. Personally, our favorite way to donate is through the online auction. These are items donated by community businesses, and all proceeds raised go to KPCW. As of this writing, there are nearly 100 items up for bid, including things like two Epic Local Passes, an adorable aqua cruiser bike from Storm Cycles, and those ever-so-popular 3-night lodging deals from Dog in Haus.

Another (but not the final!) way to support, year-round, is to join the Broadcasters Club. Benefits of this group include fabulous branded gear, exclusive member events (ski days, golf outings, social VIP affairs, etc.) and provide a way for you to ensure KPCW remains firmly anchored in our Park City community.

A huge thank you to KPCW for the myriad services you provide to our community and the work you do to lift up and support our vast nonprofit and local business network!

Park City Nonprofit Highlight: Summit Community Gardens

August 1, 2018 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

The Secret Garden
Most people we ask have heard of the Summit Community Gardens (SCG) – but don’t know where to find it. That ends now! This 1.5 acre plot of land, flourishing with crops of fresh flowers, vegetables, herbs, and shrubs, with a compost pile and honeybees, to boot, is a marvelously otherworldly experience – and one you won’t need to unearth a key to unlock (the garden is open to the community from dawn until dusk).

Where To Find It
SCG is located in Matt Knoop Memorial Park – another terrific community area! The park is tucked behind the Winter Sports School – just keep driving! You’ll locate the Community Gardens at 4056 Shadow Mountain Dr — that’s off of Old Ranch Road.

“Gather, Learn, And Grow”
The eight-foot fence surrounding the garden – is to keep Park City veggie predators like elk, deer, and moose away from your plot – and the goodies you grow there.

The garden is set up in a wheel, with information keys scattered throughout. We recommend you stroll along the paths first, breathe deeply and take it all in, and then take another tour around while you pause to read up on each section.

SCG put down roots with Summit County, The Summit Land Conservancy, and Basin Recreation in 2015. An agricultural easement on the land led the partners to create the garden on 1.5 acres in the central Snyderville Basin location. As its website states, “Summit Community Gardens is a nonprofit organization founded on the principle and mission to build and strengthen our community by educating, empowering, and providing an opportunity for people to grow their own food successfully and sustainably.” Just a few years in, and we’d say these gardens are already a successful destination for our community to “gather, learn, and grow.”

Herbs, Sensory, Pollinator, Fire Wise, and Kids’ Gardens
The Perennial Herb and Sensory space is the first you see when you walk in and grows herbs like Sage, Thyme, and Chives. These grow back year after year, along with sensory treats like Lavender. Future plans include Lamb’s Ear, for you to touch, and native grasses for you to listen to as they rustle in the wind.

Adjacent to this area is the Perennial Pollinator zone, filled with climate-appropriate (aka low-water needs) perennial plants, shrubs, and flowers. The root that connects these — that they all attract and feed native, valuable pollinators and our community is encouraged to grow these in their own gardens to entice bees and butterflies.

Next up – the ever-important Fire Wise Garden. The SCG staff is quick to note that no plant is fireproof – the low-water-needs plants in this zone are not fire-accelerants, and may even be able to withstand flames in some cases. How is this possible? Some of the plants have natural soaps and oils – which decrease flammability. Others have high moisture content and grow low to the ground (discourages climbing fire). Plants in this garden include Ice Plant, Soapwort, and Snow in Summer.

Our favorite stop follows – the Kids’ Garden. It’s under construction but is already magical. Kids can walk right in through the fun tunnel entrance (adults will need to duck), or one of the other entry paths. All of them lead to what will eventually be a center wigam, to be built from Uinta Mountain willow brushes. The wigwam will create a secret shady gathering space, and the kids’ garden will also feature areas for music, building, games, and discovery. The area is enclosed by a living fence, and, as you can see, there’s already a pretty special gathering area in place – one worthy of Mary Lennox and Colin Craven, for sure.

Community Garden Pods
After you relive your youth for a bit in the Kids’ area, you’ll discover the Community Garden Pods. Plot members have about a 4’ x 16’ bed to tend. Part of the fun is to walk from plot to plot to see the different styles, plants, and flowers that grow. The raised wooden beds were created for our community members who deal with disabilities or who have trouble bending low.

Bees
There’s a beehive at SCG! The “Horizontal Top Bar” hive design means that the bees are able to build a suitable home at their own speed – and provides an observation window which doesn’t disturb the bees. The community is invited to check in on the bees through the observation window at any time.

A New Gold Standard for Utah Green
It’s no secret that lawns are water hogs, but there’s a low-water, low-maintenance option for grass seed! You can see the No Mow Mix, from High Country Gardens, in the Lawn Space. In addition to not needing much water (except in dry spells), when you skip mowing, the grass blades get extra soft and swirly.

Demonstration Garden: Nibbles | Greens | Root Veggies | Cover Crops | Flowers
The Demonstration Garden is grown and maintained by garden staff. Seasonal and climate-appropriate fruits, vegetables, flowers, and cover crop are grown here, and much of what is produced will be donated to other local nonprofits and food banks.

Be sure to stop into the Nibble Garden, though, since the community is welcome to grab some nibbles! Snap peas and beans, cherry tomatoes and strawberries are there for the nibblin’ right now, with more varieties to come as the garden grows.

Events
There are so many ways for you to enjoy SCG and its blooming community. The first event is SOON – Wednesday, August 1!

Outdoor Painting Party
Wednesday, August 1
6:30 PM @ Summit Community Gardens
Step-by-step guidance for a garden-themed still life will be provided by The Paint Mixer. All you have to bring is a light jacket and your favorite beverage! (Open to all ages; $50 per painter; $10 of each ticket goes to support SCG.)

Summit County Community Farmers Market
Tuesday, August 14, August 28, September 11
11 AM – 6 PM @ Summit Community Gardens
A traditional farmer’s market presented by the Summit County Health Department, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, Utah State University Extension, Summit Community Gardens, and the Farmer’s Market Coalition. Several growers will be set up with fresh produce and – bonus! – car seat checks will be offered by health education staff.

Second Sundays in the Garden
August 12 & September 9
4 – 7 PM  @ Summit Community Gardens
A casual Sunday afternoon in the garden with live local music, garden education stations, local business spotlights, and good company. Bring a camp chair, beverages, and smiles! No tickets required, and this event is free. Kids are welcome, but please leave the dogs at home.

DIG IN with EATS Park City
Sunday, August 26
3 – 6 PM @ Summit Community Gardens
D.I.G. In! Is an annual community event hosted by EATS Park City and Summit Community Gardens. It features fresh, local, garden-to-table dinner, interactive fun, live music, and a stroll through the garden to see what’s growing. The party (open to any age) helps spread the love of healthy food and gardening.

Support
If you choose to support Summit Community Gardens, your donation will go toward things like enhancing the garden, community garden maintenance, educational and community events, water conservation efforts, and providing accessible raised beds for people with limited mobility. A worthy cause to ensure this community treasure continues to blossom for decades to come!

Small Business Highlight: Ellie’s Chefs | Catering | Cafe

July 29, 2018 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

One of the local Park City businesses we enjoy is Ellie’s Chefs | Catering | Cafe. Ellie’s Catering frequently provides services for us right here in The Colony, and Ellie has recently opened a brand-new cafe in the Kimball Art Center. Ellie’s goal is to provide clean, creative cuisine; here’s a look at all the ways you can enjoy it!

Services
Ellie’s provides everything in its name: (private) Chefs, Catering, Cafe – and more: you can also have meals dropped off at your door (pick-up is an option, too). The meals are ready to roll – all you have to do is heat according to the included instructions.

The New Cafe
Natural, seasonal ingredients inform the menu, which changes based on availability, as most local, clean menus do. You can grab breakfast, lunch, and snacks from the Cafe, and (leashed) pups are welcome on the patio. The breakfast menu will usually include items like breakfast tacos, veggie frittata, and breakfast breads (come here on your carb cheat day!). For lunch, there are sandwiches served with chips and a pickle, but the signature bowls are not to be missed. Enjoy a Kale & Quinoa Bowl, Asian Salmon Bowl or a Mediterranean Bowl. Yum.

Ellie’s Cafe is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Community Involvement

The food is fabulous, but one of the things we like most about Ellie’s is how committed the company is to providing support for our local community. Ellie’s contributes to a number of local nonprofits, like the National Ability Center, Recycle Utah – Park City, EATS (Eat Awesome Things At School), Park City Community Foundation, Adopt-A-Native-Elder, Peace House, and Summit Community Gardens.

Ellie’s Catering provided hors-d’oeuvres for our Music in the Meadow event.

One of our favorite reasons to shop locally is that more of the money we spend stays in our community – it pays local wages, it is spent at *other* local stores to purchase supplies and goods, and most of all, some of it is donated to local nonprofits. As it says on Ellie’s website, “when you hire Ellie’s, you are also supporting … organizations…who help make our lives so much better.” Any effort to build up and support our community is one we can get behind here at The Colony.
