Park City Event Guide: August 31 – September 3

It’s the unofficial end to summer this weekend, with Labor Day/Miners’ Day and the start of September. School is in full swing, so books are on the brain. You can stock up at the Friends of the Library book sale, which starts tomorrow. There are also a ton of opportunities to hear live music – and an entire day packed full of fun come Monday.

“Last Friday” Gallery Stroll

It’s already the last Friday in August – summer, where did you go?! – and that means it’s time for the Last Friday Gallery Stroll! Put on some comfy shoes and head on out – many of our community galleries hold artist receptions, demonstrations, and other fun events. Most of them are within walking distance of Main Street or along the free trolley route. More information at the Park City Gallery Association website. American Idol: Live!
7 PM @ DeJoria Center

See your favorite American Idol contestants (well, the top 11 finalists, anyway) sing at DeJoria Center tonight. The showcase features the former contestants singing both as solo acts and as an ensemble. Tickets are still available for this show.

Peter Yarrow
The Egyptian Theatre

Artist and activist Peter Yarrow returns to the Egyptian Theatre through September 2nd. His songwriting has produced songs (for Peter, Paul & Mary) like “Puff, The Magic Dragon,” “Day Is Done,” “The Great Mandala” and “Light One Candle.” Shows are at 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday; 6 p.m. show on Sunday.

Deer Valley Concert Series: Gov’t Mule

The new Gov’t Mule album, “Revolution Come… Revolution Go,” was released June 9. Known for “cleverly-crafted songs, intelligent lyrical commentary, and downright incendiary playing,” Gov’t Mule should be a fun Park City event.

Mountain Bike Race

Some of the country’s strongest endurance mountain bike racers will be riding the best trails Park City has to offer. This is a true point to point race, with riders rolling on single track for more than 90% of the race, for a total distance of about 75 miles – with around 12,000’ of climbing! The route, which takes between 7 and 12 *hours* to finish, sends riders through both ski resorts, and the organizers say the race is guaranteed to please both a regular trail-rider and out-of-town visitors. On the Main Stage, you can catch BroBand – two brothers ages 9 and 13. Kellen plays guitar while little brother Blake jumps from piano to guitar to ukulele. At 2 p.m., Patwa Reggae Band picks it up, with members from America, England, and Jamaica, TPRB creates an original blend of Park City reggae.

Deer Valley Concert Series: Jason Mraz

Jason Mraz has a sound that you can’t help but to bop along to while smiling. He brings his positive message and soulful, folk-pop sound to the Deer Valley Concert Series on Monday evening. Many of his releases have gone platinum, including “I’m Yours” and “I Won’t Give Up.” He’s also a two-time Grammy winner, and his shows regularly sell out across the globe.

White Pine Touring running expert Patrick Coffey leads a group run on select Monday nights through September. The runs are about a mile-and-a-half in length and focused on beginner and intermediate trail runners. Routes are posted to the White Pine Facebook page prior to each (free) run.

Nutrition Essentials

This four-session course teaches the basics of nutrition to help improve and maintain health and well-being. For $60, participants learn about the following topics:

The Park City Farmers Market is at the base of Park City Mountain Resort this year! The seasonal market is open for business each Wednesday and features a large selection of fresh, local goods. This film is part of the Made in Utah Film Series. From the Park City Film Series website: “‘Art+Belief’ follows the journey of Trevor Southey, a gay Mormon artist from Africa who dreams of becoming a modern-day Michelangelo. At its core, Art+Belief is about the balancing act between individual vision and religious conformity and the unlikely possibilities of reconciliation. These artists show us that we each have a unique spiritual journey that can flourish regardless of our religious allegiances.” There will be a Q & A with director Nathan Florence after the screening, which is free to the community.

Park City Film Series:“Won’t You Be My Neighbor”

Put this one on your calendar! There has been so much buzz about “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” we’ll be surprised if there’s an open seat left for any one of the screenings. The film takes an intimate look at Fred Rogers, known to most of us as the zip-up-cardigan-wearing Mr. Rogers. This emotional film goes into the heart of the quietly revolutionary genius who was Mr. Rogers. Shows are at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Hike for Hunger
Saturday, September 8
1 – 6 PM

This annual event raises awareness about hunger issues locally – and globally. Each year, Park City’s Christian Center serves thousands of residents in Summit and Wasatch counties through local food pantries. The Christian Center also delivers healthy snacks to over 350 local students each month as part of the Snacks in Backpacks program.

Watch for more information on Hike for Hunger, as well as a closer look at the good work the Christian Center does for our community, in the coming days.

MINERS’ DAY
Monday, September 3

This year marks our town’s 122nd celebration of Miners’ Day! (And, in case you’re wondering, yes, the apostrophe goes *after* the s.) Each year, the Park City Rotary Club hosts an all-day festival of fun to honor our town’s mining heritage. Most activities and festivities happen along Historic Main Street, with the food featured at City Park. The Rotary Club estimates that more than 17,000 people enjoyed last year’s Miners’ Day merriment. Here’s the fun rundown for Monday, September 3:

7:30 – 9:30 AM →
Breakfast @ City Park
If you’re among the few who are up and at ’em before 8 a.m., you know how peaceful Park City feels at that time of the morning. So come out early – the breakfast begins at 7:30 – and enjoy some quiet time with a stack of pancakes, ham, eggs, hash browns, and more. The breakfast is provided by St. Mary’s Catholic Church and proceeds from the $5 per person feast go to help religious education programs (kids 4 and under eat for free). If you’re among the 5K runners, it’s a terrific way to fuel back up for your day of events!

Miners’ Day 5K @ City Park
Not beginning with breakfast? Start with the fun-run!

The Miners’ Day 5k (also known as the Bark City 5K) starts in City Park, loops through the trails, and ends right back where you started so you can grab food. The race is organized by the Park City Rotary Club. While the fast 5K course is pleasant enough, you’re encouraged to make things extra fun with a costume – and/or your dog! Strollers are also welcome; that group starts behind the other runners.

Proceeds from the 5K will be funneled back into our community in the form of a grant from the Rotary Club Park City.

World-Famous Running of the Balls @ Historic Main Street
You better get to Main Street early if you want a spot where you can actually *see* this event. It is PACKED with people. And yes, it gets its name from the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain. This event, however, usually results in fewer injuries.

Anyone can “adopt” a yellow golf ball for $5 – or 5 for $20. The nearly 10,000 balls are released at the top of Main and shoot into a track. The first balls through the chute win INSANE prizes like season ski passes, hotel stays, fabulous dinners, and tons of other options. Dozens of additional prizes are given away for the close finishers. It’s no wonder people get so hyped up about this race. The best place to post up for the finish line is near the post office, and winners are posted in City Park and on the Miners’ Day website.

You can purchase your balls from any member of the Park City Rotary Club, on Historic Main Street on the day-of, and at the Park Silly Market the day before Miners’ Day!

The main event on Main Street for the day – this parade marches down Main, skips over to Park Ave., and finishes at City Park. It begins at 11 a.m., but if you’re running on Park City time and arrive a few minutes late you’ll likely still get to see everything!

Live Music – Changing Lanes Experience @ City Park Stage
The omnipresent Mountain Town Music is at it again, programming terrific live music for our community to enjoy together. At 11:30 a.m., you can enjoy the Changing Lanes Experience. If you’ve never seen this group, you will soon learn why they have “experience” in their name.

At 3, enjoy Memphis McCool – which can best be described as “power soul” music. The group creates all-new music in a modern take on soul and groove music.

BBQ Lunch @ City Park
You can truly make this a day without having to head home at all – there are things to do, see, and eat all day long! Lunch will bring you back to City Park for a BBQ cookout courtesy of Kumbayah Kitchen. There will be beverages and brews (bring your ID, they *will* check), but bring your own blanket to enjoy the feast!

Family Fun @ City Park
If you’re going to stay out of the house all day, you’re going to need some stuff to keep the kids entertained. Luckily, Kids Races start at 12:30 p.m. in City Park. With running races, a sack race (gunny sacks provided), and a wheelbarrow race (we are cracking up just thinking about this one), there are races for little ones of all ages.

No worries, there are also bouncy houses, crafting booths, a climbing wall, a fire truck (!), and, new this year, a dunk tank! Enjoy face painting, henna tattoos, a dog & cat adoption event, a shaved-ice shack, gourmet cotton candy, and Texas Twisters (described as a cold sweet blended fruit-based drink). We can only imagine (with slight trepidation) how exhausted the kiddos will be after a day of all this fun!

Mucking & Drilling Competition @ Skateboard Park parking lot
Wondering where the actual “miner” activities are in Miners’ Day? Show up at City Park for Mucking & Drilling and you won’t be in the dark anymore. Competitors come from all around the Mountain West to compete!

Mucking is loading ore into an ore cart (using heavy machinery), and then dumping it as quickly as possible. A timer watches this carefully.

Drilling is when the competitors “manhandle” a huge compressed-air hammer drill and hoses to put two deep holes into a slab of rock in the shortest amount of time.

We’re told you need to arrive early to get a spot on the bleachers – and best of all, the event is free!

Skateboard Bowl Jam @ Skateboard Park
If skateboarding is more your speed, there’s also a competition for you to watch in that world! The contest is for both amateurs and pros, with prizes for each division. You *d0* need to register in advance, and helmets are required. You can find more information here.

This is a gathering to raise awareness – and funds – for mental health and suicide prevention. There will be a BBQ lunch available, with a suggested $20 donation. The event is presented by CONNECT and the Taylor Hagen Memorial Foundation.

Riders begin at Timpanogos Harley Davidson in Lindon and will ride to the Park City Fire Station. They’ll be escorted by highway patrol the whole way. To learn more about CONNECT, click HERE.

The auction features 6 unique experience packages that are all better with open space. There’s a complimentary shuttle coach to and from the Bash from Park City. This one is a favorite – and there are still just a few tickets available!

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes asks men to walk one mile in high heels. The event is presented by Peace House – an organization which is committed to ending family violence and abuse through education, outreach, support services, and safe housing. Contender Bicycles is hosting a complimentary women’s repair clinic and pop-up shop with Park City’s own Erica Tingey of Women in the Mountains, and Debbie Drain of The Chicks Company. Roll over at 6 pm, at 1352 White Pine Canyon Road (next to St. Mary’s). The focus of this clinic is on braking and shifting adjustment.

Women’s Road Rides
Mondays: 5:45 – 7:30 PM
Through August 27

Start at Jans on Park Ave, then hit the road with a tribe of ladies for a couple of hours. Bring rain protection, energy good and plenty of water, plus your flat repair kit. Bikes are available to rent ($15, based on availability), but the event is free!

Women’s Mountain Bike Rides
Tuesdays: 6-8 PM
Through August 28

Another women-only option during the week is the Tuesday night mountain bike rides with White Pine Touring. The rides are led by Team Sugar guides, and the group is divided up based on your skill and comfort level. Meet at White Pine Touring at 6 p.m., then explore new trails and meet new friends for two fun-filled hours. This experience is also free.

Twilight Ride Series
Wednesdays: 4 – 8 PM
Through August 22

Enjoy the mountain at dusk with the Twilight Ride Series at Deer Valley on Wednesdays. From 4 until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, take advantage of lift-served mountain biking (Silver Lake Express and Sterling Express chairlifts). DV operations stay open to serve riders for the Twilight Rides (through August 22).

Group Mountain Bike Rides
Thursdays: 6-8 PM
Through August 30

One more crew to hit the trails with – the Thursday night group mountain bike rides! Also at White Pine Touring, this one is open to everyone, with three groups to choose from based on ride intensity. The rides are led by White Pines Touring Racing powered by jans.com mountain bike team members and guides. And on the last Thursday of each month, there’s a free BBQ and adult beverages, provided by local vendors, at the end of the ride.

Nonprofit Highlight: EATS Park City

Healthy AND yummy: if you had to boil it down, that’s the basic premise behind EATS (Eat Awesome Things At School) Park City.

Its mission is to ensure “every student has opportunities to develop lifelong healthy habits and access to fresh, nutritious, appealing food,” and in just about six years, it has made tremendous strides to accomplish just that.

EATS uses a multi-pronged approach to educate students on healthier eating in an effort to create lifelong habits; it accomplishes this effort in part by working hand-in-hand with the Park City School District to improve school food. EATS’ core values encompass a commitment to making menu options healthier, encourage PCSD as a whole to improve the health of offerings even outside of school, and emphasize the importance of learning how to grow, harvest, and prepare food. The programming EATS provides makes these core values accessible and attainable for our community.

PROGRAMMING

It all begins with advocacy – and the first step of this tenet takes the form of taste tests in PCSD schools. Taste testing provides a low-commitment way for kiddos to be introduced to new, healthy foods – and to try them. Research indicates children need to be exposed to certain foods a number of times before they accept it – or come to enjoy the taste.

Additional programming includes cooking classes, indoor and outdoor school gardens, garden-based education, and camps. This lineup not only improves fruit and veggie consumption (kids are more likely to try foods they have grown and prepared themselves), it makes it more likely that they’ll teach their *own* families about healthier eating. Not only that, incorporating this into the school day creates project- and place-based learning opportunities – which are shown to improve test scores and behavior, as well as lift self-esteem.

THE SCHOOL LUNCH MENU

After the taste testing comes the VOTING. The students weigh in on whether they like the food featured in the taste tests – and, if enough students vote YES for a certain food, it is put on the school lunch menu rotation. All of the recipes are created by a team of uniquely-qualified local experts, including chefs from world-class restaurants, internationally renowned dietitians and nutritionists, child nutrition services staff, and even the students themselves.

We keep saying that EATS advocates for food that is not only nutritious – but delicious – and we mean it! And it makes sense, because really – if something doesn’t taste good, you’re not likely to keep eating it. That’s why so much effort goes into crafting the recipes for school taste testing: it needs to taste better than it sounds.

Head over to the EATS website for the selections this group is helping PCSD cook up for students – they list recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, sides, soups, and snacks. Some of our favorites include Vermont Maple Apple French Toast Bake, Gluten-Free Zucchini Lasagna (aka Deer Valley Lasagna), and Strawberry Banana Sunflower Butter “Sushi.” These recipes are all seriously delicious – we are speaking from experience!

There are a number of ways to support EATS – as volunteers, partners, and donors. EATS also hosts community events – one of which is happening this weekend.

Summit Community Gardens

EATS Park City and Summit Community Gardens are coming together to bring the *community* together to share delicious, nutritious food. The event will feature tasty, local, fresh food and $5 drinks. There will also be family-friendly activities: face painting, live music, a photographer, and friendly goats to meet. Any pictures taken can be purchased online, and 50% of the fee is donated back to EATS and Summit Community Gardens.

Small Business Highlight: Pink Elephant Coffee Roasters

Sunday morning (hopefully) means you get to enjoy a lazy cup of coffee or three before the activities begin! If you’re looking for a spot to enjoy just that, on a beautiful morning like this one on Historic Main Street in Park City, look no further than Pink Elephant Coffee Shop.

You’ll find Pink Elephant Coffee Roasters on the 2nd floor!

This shop, which serves small-batch artisan coffee, roasted in Utah, is located on the 2nd floor of 509 Main Street. The building is structured like a true local business collective. Walk into the Prospect store (Billy’s Barbershop is in there, too!) and go directly up the stairs.

of Land Juicery juices (Pink Elephant partners with them and they share the space), items from a local bakery, Ritual Chocolate on the shelves, two high-top tables at which you can relax and sip your coffee, and a good old-fashioned coffee counter, replete with those fabulous blue mugs.

It turns out we’re not the only ones who love the blue mugs. The (wonderfully friendly) barista was quite used to people snapping multiple pictures of the mugs for Instagram purposes and had his answer ready when we asked where we could get our hands on them: “Acme & Co., but the color is back ordered.”

Every inch of this small space is maximized.

Pink Elephant serves single-origin green coffee beans, roasts them in small batches and makes them into drinks with meticulous attention to detail. This is no exaggeration – we ordered a decaf Americano and the simple drink was *perfectly* executed; the shot was weighed, and the conscientious crafting was all done with a friendly smile and engaging conversation.

So what’s with that name? Here’s how they explain on their website:

“The great author Jack London writes about seeing pink elephants when one has over-imbibed. Referred to as delirium tremens (Latin for the “trembling madness”), we feel this way when we’ve had too much coffee … or too little.”

No surprise that this color is back ordered.

This weekend, it feels like things are winding down, but not without about eleventy free see-ya-summer concerts. There are so many, in fact, we couldn’t list them all! Check the schedule at Mountain Town Music’s website; they’re responsible for programming so many of them and have created opportunities for hundreds of our community members to enjoy so much music throughout our gorgeous summer days and nights.

This weekend, we’re enjoying our free time to the fullest as we say a bittersweet goodbye to summer. We know, we keep saying it and it’s pretty uncool. But we need to face it eventually – school starts next week!

KPCW’s Back Alley Bash
5 – 9 PM @ Town Lift Plaza

TONIGHT: Cole Sport presents the annual KPCW Back Alley Bash, from 5 – 9 p.m. at the Town Lift Plaza. This free event has live music, games, and activities for the kiddos. There’s also food and beverages available for purchase, and all sales benefit KPCW, our local nonprofit, community radio station. PLUS – there’s an opportunity drawing, the winner of which will get a Grand Glamping Adventure for four: a 3-night stay in a luxury tent at Conestoga Ranch + breakfast & dinner each day! Neil Simon’s “Biloxi Blues”
8 PM @ The Egyptian Theatre

This Tony-award-winning show is presented by the Neil Simon Festival and is the second in Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical comedy trilogy. The show focuses on Eugene Jerome, a young army recruit during World War II, stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1943. There he will meet a diverse assortment of soldiers,l learn about life, love, and some harsh lessons while in boot camp. Some adult language and situations. “Biloxi Blues” will play the Egyptian Theatre through August 19th.

26.2 miles of incredible Park City trails!

Mid-Mountain Marathon
7 AM @ Silver Lake, Deer Valley

No surprise to us! This trail marathon has been voted the best in Utah – and the course rolls right through The Colony! It begins bright and early – 7 AM – at Deer Valley, and follows the iconic Mid-Mountain Trail for nearly 20 miles. The last bit of the course takes runners through the Utah Olympic Park trail system, with an exciting finish at the base of the 120-meter Olympic Nordic jump.

The Mid-Mountain runs right through The Colony!

The course winds across the Wasatch Back at an average elevation of 8,200′ and is largely shaded single track, and also serves as a fundraiser for our community Mountain Trails Foundation, which builds, maintains, and protects Park City’s 400-plus miles of trails.

Build Your Gnome Home

Calling all kids! You guy probably already know this, but everyone needs a home for their garden gnome! Or a fairy garden. Or a terrarium. Whatever you want to call your creation, you can make one Saturday at Kimball Art Center!

Guidance on building the craft is provided, along with materials: large clay slabs, felt, yarn, popsicle sticks, and other supplies. Once the gnome home is constructed, kids will paint their houses with colorful underglazes. Due to drying and firing times, pottery will be ready for pick up 10-12 days after the class has ended. Adults are required to register with children; no more than two children per adult. $50 per child/adult pair ($25 for each extra student),

This is a fun one: you’re instructed to “get ready to sing, clap, dance and sneeze along during this visit” – sounds like a winner, for sure. Jim Gill is an award-winning musician and author, and his music play creates the spirit of a family room in the concert hall.
