Park City Event Guide: December 10 – 13

December 10, 2018 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

Another packed week – with tourists and activities alike – awaits you. If you’re overbooked, take a couple of hours to simply enjoy holiday music on Tuesday night. If you are looking to pack your calendar full of holiday happenings, we’ve got ideas for that, too, starting with an ugly sweater arts & crafts event. Read on – and enjoy the week!

MONDAY, DECEMBER 10

How Electronics Impact the Human Brain
6 PM @ Jim Santy Auditorium

What are your answers to these questions?

  • How many hours a day do you or your family members use electronic devices?
  • Is this electronic usage impacting the growth and development of the brain?
  • Is social media bad for you and/or your family
  • Are there ways to help offset the negative effects of electronics use?
  • Are electronics neurologically addictive?

Monday night’s interactive workshop is hosted by the Summit County Health Department and will focus on how our world, filled to the brim with electronics, creates addiction and affects the neurological development of the human brain.

Dr. Christy Kane will report evidence-based research on brain function, what impact electronics have on neurotransmitters in the brain – and most important – how to mitigate the negative effects of electronic addiction.

Melissa Manchester
8 PM @
Egyptian Theatre

From the Park City Summit County Arts (seriously, read this; it’s fascinating):

Grammy Award-winning artist Melissa Manchester was born in New York where her father was a bassoonist for the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and her mother was one of the first women to design and found her own clothing firm, Ruth Manchester Ltd.

They introduced her to all the classics, and by the age of 15, Melissa was already a published poet. After graduating from the High School of the Performing Arts (where she studied acting), Melissa entered New York University and enrolled in a songwriting class taught by Paul Simon.

She landed a staff writing job at Chappell Music and performed as a solo singer/pianist in the clubs of Greenwich Village. While working in the New York jingle singing circuit, she met Bette Midler and Barry Manilow. As a backup singer for Bette, Melissa fulfilled her childhood fantasy of playing Carnegie Hall. Six months later, she had a recording contract, and went on to headline at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall, and performed for sold-out audiences across the country. Buy tickets HERE.

Wednesdays – Sundays: 10 AM – 4 PM

Park City Film: “Church & State” + Post-Film Discussion
7 PM @ Jim Santy Auditorium
Park City Library

“Church & State” is the story of an inexperienced gay activist and a tiny Salt Lake City law firm who joined forces to topple Utah’s gay marriage ban.

The film’s ride on the bumpy road to equality in Utah offers a glimpse at the Mormon church’s influence in state politics and the squabbles inside the gay community that nearly derailed a chance to make history. “Church & State” is a story of triumph, setback and a little-known lawsuit that should have failed, but instead paved the way for a U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized gay unions nationwide.

Stick around after the screening for a panel discussion with

  • Holly Tuckett, director
  • James Huntsman – producer
  • Jennifer Dobner – story consultant
  • Torben Berhard – editor
  • Mark Lawrence – activist who started the case
  • Lawyer Peggy Tomsic & her wife Cindy Bateman
  • Kody Partridge & Laurie Wood, plaintiffs
  • Kate Call, plaintiff

This film is presented in partnership with Park City Library, CONNECT Summit County and Planned Parenthood Association of Utah.

Dr. Ben Belnap, the Associate Superintendent of Student Wellness at Park City School District, will moderate a panel after the film.

Open House
4 PM @ NEW Children’s Justice Center
Summit County

Tour the future home of the Summit County Children’s Justice Center – and meet the team of professionals who serve local victims of child abuse. From the CJC website:

“The Summit County Children’s Justice Center is the first step in the child abuse investigation process and provides a neutral, comfortable environment designed to put a child at ease. A non-leading interview is conducted by a forensic interviewer to get to the truth about what a child may have experienced.

Each interview is video-recorded to be used as the child’s voice during the investigation process. This aids not only in the prosecution of these offenses but also allows the child to tell their story once and move on to the process of healing. Our team is made up of Summit County and Park City Police detectives, caseworkers, prosecutors, victim advocates, and trauma-trained therapists and medical staff.”

In spring, the snow melts to reveal an amazing network of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, connecting to more than 400 miles of single-track trails throughout the surrounding area.
The Colony is just 35 minutes from Salt Lake International Airport and minutes to Park City’s historic Main Street, home to the Sundance Film Festival and world-class dining and shopping.

Summer’s not going to be fashionably late this year—she’s already sneaking in. The trails are greening up, wildflowers are stretching, and the puffy coats are officially in storage. Who’s ready for long hikes and longer days?
