Park City Event Guide: Opening Day @ Park City Mountain

The wait is OVER and opening day is (just about) here! Both Park City Mountain Resort villages (Park City Mountain and Canyons) will open for winter 2018 | 2019 operations at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, November 21. But don’t wait till 9 a.m. to head over, there are a few things popping beforehand at each village – take a look at the celebrations, plus, get a glimpse of what’s new and improved this year…

NEW THIS YEAR
High Meadow Park: Brand-New Dedicated Ski & Snowboard Learning Area
Park City Mountain has always been the place to go to enjoy a comfortable learning environment for beginners of any age.

That remains the same, but this year, there is going to be a whole new area in which to learn and where beginners, kids, and families will experience a whole new level of comfort.

The brand-new High Meadow Park is an entire dedicated area for learning, with gentle terrain and new snowmaking, which will create terrific surfaces for new skiers and snowboarders. The brand-new Candy Cabin offers a place to take a rest and grab a snack, and getting there easy, too – there’s a new, detachable high-speed four-passenger lift.

Mid-Mountain Lodge: A New Take On The Classic
This classic spot, the Mid-Mountain Lodge, is beloved by just about everyone who has ever clomped in its door.

The building is more than 120 years old and originally functioned as a miners’ boarding house. The renovation pays tribute to our community’s rich mining heritage and offers a cozy spot to warm up and fill up.

Additional indoor seating is welcome news to those among us who have waited, snow dripping off our boots, to enjoy the food and a beverage. There’s also an upgraded dining area, newly “crafted chef-driven menus,” and a full-service bar.

Cloud Dine: Now With More Seating To Take In The Views

More than 200 seats have been added to this modern bistro, which sits right on top of a Wasatch Range ridgeline, so guests here get to sit back and take in the unbelievable views. This restaurant is known for “foodie-

approved” cuisine and its spectacular presentation, and now, there’s even more room to enjoy all of it.

Expanded Snowmaking & Grooming
Most of the mountain will be open to exploration even earlier thanks to new snowmaking capabilities on Red Pine Road, a major connector trail off of Tombstone Express. More snow means the trail will open earlier in the season and provide access to even more terrain across the mountain.

AT THE COLONY

More than 50% of the Park City Mountain’s Canyons Village terrain can be found within the boundaries here at The Colony. Even better, the high-speed Quicksilver Gondola, which zips riders from one side of the enormous resort to the other in mere moments, is also inside The Colony. The Gondola is directly accessible for Colony homeowners in possession of a lift ticket – which means that the entirety of the Park City Mountain land is right outside the door – and at their ski tips.

This unmatched access means skiers and snowboarders enjoy everything from first tracks on a powder day to perfect corduroy groomers (more than 120 trails are groomed each night) throughout the season. Also easily accessible for owners – The Colony’s own private seasonal Yurt, where lunch is served, owners and friends can warm up during the day, and aprés and dinner events can be enjoyed.

Small Business Highlight: Lylo Bag

The story of Hollye Shepherd and the Lylo bag is proof there is no timeline on achieving a dream. It took several years, a little bit of experience – and a lot of persistence.

Let’s back up.
A few years ago, Hollye was pregnant with her first child and experiencing quickly-growing concern about the amount of radiofrequency her phone emitted. The California Department of Health had recently released a warning, urging people to not wear their phones next to their bodies, as the long-term effects of cell phone radiation are still unknown, and Hollye didn’t want to take any chances with her growing family. She looked and looked but couldn’t find many products designed to lower the radiofrequency emissions of phones – and the pickings were even more slim when it came to designs for women.

So she got to work. Hollye didn’t have any sewing or fashion experience but she bought some fabric and put together a prototype. She worked with several different manufacturers before landing on a factory in Mexico that gave her the product she wanted while also maintaining good conditions for its workers. And it wasn’t just her preference that went into building this purse. She interviewed more than 100 women to determine what exactly they wanted from an everyday bag.

After two and a half years, a move to Park City, several prototypes, dozens of interviews with women, and lots of late nights later, the Lylo bag was born. It is small enough to not get in the way but big enough for your essentials: phone, cards, lip gloss, and keys. It can be worn in four different ways and is designed to go from day to night seamlessly.

Oh – and it blocks out 90% of the radiation put off by your phone. The bag is designed so the protective barrier is only against your body, which means it won’t impact your phone’s reception. For the outer materials, you can choose between leather and vegan cork. The bag is also water resistant because, as a mom knows all too well, life happens.

Its Kickstarter campaign just wrapped, and the Lylo bag exceeded its goal by more than 6200 dollars. And if you didn’t back it in time to get your Christmas delivery, you can sign up on the Lylo Design website to be reminded of its October 2019 launch.

Hollye says she was able to work on this project after her (now three!) children went to bed. And, while it took a bit longer with those hours, she says she wouldn’t have done it any other way. Being a working mom has allowed her to teach her daughters about running a business as well as being creative themselves. She told the Park Record, “I’m glad that I can inspire them as women to be entrepreneurs, and I hope that as they grow, they see the importance of what I am doing.”

The Lylo bag stands for love and light—on the Kickstarter page, Hollye says it represents all the effort and love she’s poured into making this bag a reality. She told the Park Record the Park City entrepreneurial network PandoLabs helped her move forward with her business. And she hopes to be able to in turn help other startups as she moves forward.

From 11 a.m. till midnight, the new Mexican restaurant on Historic Main Street, Crystal Park Cantina, will donate 20% of all sales to People’s Health Clinic. Come for lunch, dinner, or after work drinks and spend your money for a great cause.

The money donated to the PH Clinic will help our uninsured community members get the medical care they need to keep themselves and their family members healthy.

Artful Afternoons

This is a fun Friday after-school activity for kids ages 6 through 10. Participants get to explore art using a variety of fun materials each week. The clay studio at Kimball has opened its doors each Friday this fall – for anyone who wants to take a crack at clay. It’s not a class, but a studio staffer will do a demo at the top of the session on either a hand-building or wheel-throwing technique. The fee includes enough clay for two completed pieces – along with firing and glazing.

The Little Gym

Raised on a cattle ranch in Fraser, CO, Walt Evans currently calls Kamas home. He’s retired from the U.S.Ski Team and now spends his team as a musician, playing guitar, mandolin, and bass.

Evans’ other passion is Cowboy Camp Crafts. He creates unique leather guitar straps, journal covers, rustic wood frames & horseshoe art – all with reclaimed leather, steel, and wood. The Cowboy Camp Display will be featured at Artique in Kamas through November 30.

The Addams Family Musical
7:30 PM @ Egyptian Theatre

Wednesday Addams is now 18 years old – and she has fallen in love with a totally normal young man — from Ohio. Worse, she invites him – and his parents – to dinner at her parents’ place. Of course, more than dinner is served up as secrets are revealed and relationships are tested. The show is presented by the Ziegfeld Theatre Company and will run through November 24.

Park City Film presents: “Pick of the Litter”

Watch the entire journey of a litter of pups from the moment they are born and through their two years of work to become guide dogs for the blind.

But this film is not just about the (adorable) puppies: “…along the way, these remarkable animals rely on a community of dedicated individuals who train them to do amazing, life-changing things in the service of their human. Saturday Morning Guided Walk | Snowshoe Tours

Swaner Nature Preserve & EcoCenter

Winter edition of the Nature Walks – where some of the walks turn into snowshoe sessions! Learn about wetland science, natural plant and animal species, and the history of the Swaner Preserve, search for and identify animal tracks and other signs of animal life. Wear sturdy, warm boots, snow pants, hats, gloves, a coat, and bring a water bottle. Snowshoes can be rented from the EcoCenter – $2.50 for members, $5 for non-members.

If our weather cooperates, both Park City Mountain Resorts will start spinning lifts on Wednesday to celebrate the 2018 – 2019 ski and snowboard season.

Come early, grab a great parking spot (if you haven’t camped out overnight for first chair, that is), and enjoy some complimentary treats starting at 8 a.m. (in both Park City Mountain and Canyons Villages).

There will also be live music at both villages from 8 till 11, with a quick welcome speech from Bill Rock in the Park City Mountain Village at 8:50 a.m.

Each Wednesday, from 4-5 p.m., Park City Library hosts an afternoon of crafting! Attend this free event, make, and then take, your artsy and fun project every week!

“The Nightmare Before Christmas”

Each year for Park City School District holiday breaks, Park City Film screens themed movies at 4 p.m. The goal in doing that is so students have a safe and entertaining place to be in the afternoons when school is out. Oh, and, free popcorn provided!

On November 21, kids can follow the misadventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown’s beloved pumpkin king, who has become bored with the same annual routine of frightening people in the “real world.”

He accidentally stumbles on Christmastown, with its bright colors and warm spirits, and gets a new lease on life. He plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over the role, but Jack soon discovers even the best-laid plans of mice and skeleton men can go seriously awry. Park City is home to some of the world’s most gorgeous scenery, but one of the most beautiful sights you’ll ever see here is the gathering of hundreds of people who make our local nonprofits go. They’ll be scattered along streets, on corners, and near local businesses, lifting signs, shouting, and spreading smiles and happiness with each honk of a passing car. This sight can only mean one thing – it’s Park City’s annual day of giving, and the clock is ticking down for donations! A new partnership in wellness between Park City’s The Paint Mixer and local coach and trainer Jess McCurdy, The Art of Movement is a new way to be creative in a space usually reserved for paint and canvas. Join Jess for a focus on mind-body alignment, as she teaches three of her usual classes in a brand-new setting.

Sunrise GRIT 45 (strength conditioning), Vinyasa Yoga, Sweat & Flow (30-minute HIIT & 30-minute yoga), and GRIT 60 (strength conditioning) are offered Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with classes at 6 a.m., 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. (Check the schedule for specifics!) Drop-ins are $20, locals also have the option of a punch pass – which gets you ten classes for $180.

All you need to know is this: Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Judi Dench, Dame Eileen Atkins, and Dame Joan Plowright, are longtime friends. This film takes you on a journey with them, as themselves, for a weekend in the country. They catch up with one another, reminisce, and share their candid – and irreverent – thoughts on everything from art to aging to love to a life lived in the spotlight. Between them, there are innumerable iconic performances, decades of wisdom, and Oscars, Tonys, Emmys, and BAFTAs. Shows are at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Grammy Award-winning artist Melissa Manchester was born in New York where her father was a bassoonist for the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and her mother was one of the first women to design and found her own clothing firm, Ruth Manchester Ltd.

They introduced her to all the classics, and by the age of 15, Melissa was already a published poet. After graduating from the High School of the Performing Arts (where she studied acting), Melissa entered New York University and enrolled in a songwriting class taught by Paul Simon.

She landed a staff writing job at Chappell Music and performed as a solo singer/pianist in the clubs of Greenwich Village. While working in the New York jingle singing circuit, she met Bette Midler and Barry Manilow. As a backup singer for Bette, Melissa fulfilled her childhood fantasy of playing Carnegie Hall. Six months later, she had a recording contract, and went on to headline at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall, and performed for sold-out audiences across the country. Buy tickets HERE.

This film festival for kiddos is part of the Dual Language Immersion Film Program in partnership with Park City Library.

It’s a Spanish-language program of short animated, documentary, and live-action films from our friends and neighbors to the south: Mexico. A brand-new exhibit is about to open in the Tozer Gallery at the Park City Museum: Imprinting the West: Manifest Destiny, Real and Imagined. Every November, Deer Valley hosts a rug show & sale to support traditional Navajo Elders. The show features more than 600 one-of-a-kind weavings, incredible pieces of native jewelry, crafts, and the amazing culture of the Navajo people. There are cultural presentations by the Elders, including weaving demonstrations, singing, dancing, and a closing pow-wow before closing on Sunday.

This exhibit is seriously catching people in its net – and it just so happens to be the largest arachnid exhibit in the United States.

The exhibit guides visitors to explore connections between arachnids and literature, art, folklore, paleontology, science, and history. You’ll see 100 live arachnids (!) and experience hands-on activities – hopefully, the live arachnids are not the hands-on activities, but you’ll have to go see it in order to find out. INSIDER TIP: They feed the spiders on Thursdays – so that is a great time to go see some action.

The premise:
In the winter of 1944, American soldiers led by Will Knott (Ethan Hawke) are assigned to capture a small squad of German soldiers posted in France’s Ardennes forest. Tired of war, the Americans have already lost half their division and discover that their German enemy is equally unwilling to fight. With Jewish soldier Stan Shutzer (Arye Gross) interpreting, the Germans and Americans agree on a plan that will let the former surrender without violence — but then, tragedy strikes. Also starring Gary Sinise, Kevin Dillion, and Peter Berg.

There will be a panel discussion after the screening with producer Bill Borden and the former Utah Film Commissioner, Leigh von der Esch.

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — and those are the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Becoming trained in QPR equips you to save a life – just like those trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver. You’ll learn how to recognize warning signs of a suicide crisis, and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help.

Anyone 13 years and older is welcome to attend. Participants will learn:

“Church & State” is the story of an inexperienced gay activist and a tiny Salt Lake City law firm who joined forces to topple Utah’s gay marriage ban.

Park City Nonprofit Event Highlight: Live PC Give PC

$2,026,917. That’s how much money the community of Park City raised last year –in 24 hours!– to benefit more than 100 local charities. That’s a lot of money! And the Park City Community Foundation is hoping to top that this year with its annual online giving event, Live PC Give PC, coming up Friday, November 9th.

This year, the Park City Community Foundation has a special charge from the city, as it was just named Social Equity Community Convener for Park City. This means – the organization will facilitate between local nonprofits, advocates, and partner organizations, while it seeks out needs within the community, and figures out the most strategic way to meet those needs.

“The goal of this work is to make Park City a community where opportunity is accessible to all. We plan to connect people to this effort in a meaningful way so that we can make real and systemic change. We look forward to uniting Parkites with diverse social, economic and cultural backgrounds in the efforts to create a complete community,” says Katie Wright, Executive Director of Park City Community Foundation.

The Foundation began in 2007, and this year marks the 8th annual Live PC Give PC event. In the first year, the 24-hour long event raised more than $300,000 from 1500 donors. Fast forward to last year–$2,026,917 from 4,123 donors. This year, more than 160 organizations are signed up to participate, and the Community Foundation set a goal of 4,500 unique donors.

From children’s art organizations to sports teams to environmental organizations to animal rescues—there is an organization working towards something you’re passionate about. The sheer breadth of organizations is incredible!

Can’t decide on *just one* organization? No worries – the Park City Community Foundation this year wants you to spread the love! In the past, the organization had monetary goals for the Live PC Give PC event. This year, it will measure success by how many individual donors participate. AND – the organizations with the most donors will receive grants from local companies. Vail Resorts | EpicPromise |Park City Mountain is offering $2500 to the nonprofit with the most individual donors. 2nd prize–$1500, and 3rd prize–$1250. There are several other organizations that will make your donation go further; you can see those here.

The Park City Community Foundation works year-round to maximize the impact of Park City’s annual day of giving. To ensure participating nonprofits are equipped to participate across all mediums, it offered training on how to secure matching donors, how to best utilize social media, and more. This is information those organizations can use well beyond this Friday to continue to do as much good for their beneficiaries as possible.

And make sure you post to social media to encourage your friends to donate to the groups you connect with most by using the hashtag #LivePCGivePC. Click on that hashtag too, to see which organizations are matching when, and for the notifications for the three “power hours.” That means at the announced hour, a Power Hour Booster Challenge will begin, and Vail Resorts EpicPromise and Park City Mountain will add $20 to the next 200 unique donors’ online donations – each and every one! Donors who have given earlier but give again during those challenges can still be counted as unique donors.

Leave your coat in the car! For security reasons, we must check your coat upon entry into the swap. For a faster entrance and exit, leave your coat in the car.

Riverhorse on Main hosts the return of the James Beard Foundation’s “Celebrity Chef Tour” – when Riverhorse on Main Executive Chef Seth Adams partners with other accomplished chefs to create original recipes for a world-class dining experience.

The Celebrity Chef Tour visits more than 20 cities all over the country to give guests the opportunity to experience what it’s like to dine at New York City’s historic James Beard House.
