There will be a few more Try Transit Week opportunities this winter, where again – if you ditch your car to take the bus to school, work, or to ski, you’ll have the chance to win fun prizes. You’re encouraged to share your transit experience on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook by using the hashtag, #IRideParkCityTransit.

Book Club: Barbara Kingsolver’s “Unsheltered”
5 – 6 PM @ Dolly’s Bookstore

This book club is free and open to all who wish to attend – the only requirement is to have read the book! Even better, if you mention that you are planning to join in the discussion, you get 10% off if you purchase the title they’re talking about.

From the Dolly’s website, describing this month’s book, “Unsheltered”:
“How could two hardworking people do everything right in life, a woman asks, and end up destitute? Willa Knox and her husband followed all the rules as responsible parents and professionals, and have nothing to show for it but debts and an inherited brick house that is falling apart. The magazine where Willa worked has folded; the college where her husband had tenure has closed. Their dubious shelter is also the only option for a disabled father-in-law and an exasperating, free-spirited daughter. When the family’s one success story, an Ivy-educated son, is uprooted by tragedy he seems likely to join them, with dark complications of his own…

Unsheltered is the compulsively readable story of two families, in two centuries, who live at the corner of Sixth and Plum in Vineland, New Jersey, navigating what seems to be the end of the world as they know it. With history as their tantalizing canvas, these characters paint a startlingly relevant portrait of life in precarious times when the foundations of the past have failed to prepare us for the future.”

The public is invited to attend “Shiny Rock to Silver Bars: A Brief History and Explanation of Milling and Refining in Park City” lecture by mining engineer Donovan Symonds. How were the ores mined in Park City turned into silver, lead or gold bars? Why were they crushed and concentrated?

Practical demonstrations and videos will explain the processes involved in sorting the ores into concentrates and tailings. Donovan, a long-time resident of Park City, is a retired consulting mining engineer. He has enjoyed being a museum docent for about 8 years.

Park City Film Presents: “bias”
7 PM @ Jim Santy Auditorium

“If you’re human – you’re biased. Now what?”

From the Park City Film website:
“bias” challenges us to confront our hidden biases and understand what we risk when we follow our gut. Through exposing her own biases, award-winning documentary filmmaker Robin Hauser (CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap, Running for Jim) highlights the nature of implicit bias, the grip it holds on our social and professional lives, and what it will take to induce change.”

This free screening also has a post-film panel with:
– Director Robin Hauser
– Dr. Marco Barker, Associate Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer at Westminster College
– Sadie Ortiz, PCHS Senior and member of Teen Council, Latinos in Action and Bright Futures
– Meghan Zarnetske, instructional coach and social justice teacher at Treasure Mountain Junior High, will moderate.

This screening is part Park City Film’s Reel Community Series, the nonprofit’s longest-running community program, which introduces films to expand viewers’ views of the world – and connects them to other members of the Park City community. “bias” is underwritten by the Women’s Giving Fund (a project of the Park City Community Foundation).

Small Business Highlight: Motherlode Park City

December 2, 2018 by Shelby Hintze, Colony PR

“My Grandma went to **insert whatever location here** and all I got was this t-shirt.”

You’ve seen them all before–the semi-tacky souvenir t-shirt in every airport newsstand, museum gift shop, and boardwalk souvenir shack. You can find basically the exact same shirt in any city across the country. As unique as all cities are, shouldn’t its souvenirs reflect that—for tourists and locals alike?

On a trip to Big Sky Resort in Montana, Jesse Santaularia came across a t-shirt shop selling apparel that was unique and represented the area. He wondered why there wasn’t something like that in Park City, his adopted home. Jesse had worked as a lawyer for years in New York City but left when he decided to live the ski bum life. After a few trips to Park City, he knew that should be his new home base.

Despite zero experience in apparel design, he and partner Alex Lowe taught themselves to screen print and started testing out some designs. They sold products at local markets and started to gather a following. In 2016, they opened up the Motherlode storefront on Main Street. The shop carries unique apparel – items you definitely won’t find at other stores – and is perfectly representative of the city’s vibe.

Jesse told the Park Record “Obviously there are a lot of tourists that come in, and I want to give them something that’s, like, I call it original Park City nostalgia. We want to give people something that’s made here and that they’re going to remember in 10 years… It’s just souvenirs, but it’s something that was created here and made here.”

See a design you like but want it on a different shirt? They can do that for you. And beyond the pre-designed apparel, about half of Motherlode’s business is doing custom work for clients; they’ve even helped us with projects here at The Colony!

Opening a new business or have a family reunion coming up? In-house designer Parker Jones will help you come up with a design, and then they will screenprint it for you. You can also get your design transferred via vinyl, perfect for jerseys, and outerwear or stickers and window clings.

They can also transfer images on to a shirt—perfect for gifts or other small orders. Motherlode has clients all over the city, from Freshie’s to St. Regis. Oh, and, it’s worth mentioning that the t-shirts they sell are the softest, most comfortable we’ve ever come across.

Motherlode is located on Lower Main Street in the Summit Watch Plaza at 710 Main Street. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday – Sunday with varying hours on Monday. Find them online at motherlodepc.com and on social as @motherlodepc .

Summer’s not going to be fashionably late this year—she’s already sneaking in. The trails are greening up, wildflowers are stretching, and the puffy coats are officially in storage. Who’s ready for long hikes and longer days?
