QUICK – get your tickets for this one – it sells out each and every year. If Thriller at Egyptian Theatre isn’t already your family’s Halloween tradition, it’s time to make it so.

What could be more fun than Odyssey Dance Theatre’s Thriller, dancing monsters and raging maniacs? The only thing we can think of is reduce pricing – which is in effect this weekend only. Because of the content of the show, it’s recommended for children 12 and up. Most shows are at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday shows begin at 6. The show runs through October 7.

Three Identical Strangers

Our jaws dropped during this documentary more times than we can count on two hands – it’s no wonder it was the winner of the Grand Jury Documentary Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. “Three Identical Strangers” follows the unbelievable true story of three young men who are reunited by astonishing coincidence after being born identical triplets, separated at birth, and adopted by three different families. Saturday Morning Nature Walk

We are nearing the end of this seasonal Saturday walk. Grab a coffee and join the guided group to explore the wetlands at Swaner Preserve. The guide comes armed with information about the wetlands, native plants, and all the animal species you’ll see as you walk through the Preserve. This weekly event ends September 30.

The North Face Endurance Challenge
September 22 & 23

North Face isn’t joking when they call this an Endurance Challenge. This specific race starts at the highest elevation within the North America series – at 7,000 feet – but it also CLIMBS to the highest elevation of 10,000 feet. The race doesn’t pull any punches – after you crest the first HUGE hill, which begins immediately, by the way, you’ll make your way along the Wasatch Back while you navigate a mix of single- and double-track trails, ski runs, and various dirt roads at Park City Mountain.

Human Curling
 5 – 6:30 PM @ Park City Ice Arena

In normal curling, you slide stones across the ice and onto a target. In HUMAN curling – you slide… what else – yourself! And if that doesn’t sound good enough – this event is FREE. You can register online or by calling 435.615.5707. Wear warm clothing, a helmet, and rubber-soled shoes – you must be at least 12 years old to participate.

Scarecrow Festival
2 – 4 PM @ McPolin Farm

Did you know you can create a scarecrow to be featured at the festival? Join the fun at McPolin Farm to build your very own scarecrow – which will be on display through October 19th.

The event includes pumpkin painting, face painting, stuffing for your scarecrow (along with the cross to hang it upon), games, and cookies.

You do need to bring all the items to build your scarecrow – including a head, clothing, safety pins, shoes, props, scissors and any other accessories you think you’ll need.

The inaugural Brunch at Altitude at Summit Watch Plaza, hosted by Park City Magazine, is said to be a “celebration of the season and our favorite meal: brunch!”

The largest arachnid exhibit in the United States is right here in our backyard through December!

The exhibit guides visitors to explore connections between arachnids and literature, art, folklore, paleontology, science, and history. You’ll see 100 live arachnids (!) and experience hands-on activities – hopefully, the live arachnids are not the hands-on activities, but you’ll have to go see it in order to find out.

“Leave No Trace”

The Park City Film Series will screen “Leave No Trace,” which the film adaption to the book “My Abandonment.” by Peter Rock.

The film follows a father and his teenage daughter how lived their lives off the grid in the forests outside Portland, Oregon. Both are eventually put into social services, and the film follows their journey to find a new wild place to live. This annual event draws thousands to the North 40 playing fields behind Treasure Mountain Jr. High in Park City – and thousands more enjoy seeing it from afar! 

Each year at around this time, Autumn Aloft launches dozens of brightly colored balloons into the brilliant blue skies. Read our full guide to Autumn Aloft 2018 activities for all the details. All events are free and open to the community – and visitors!

Autumn Aloft reminds us that whether the balloons fly are dependent upon weather. Wind conditions that may impact a hot air balloon vary based on venue, wind direction, and gusts, and that safety is the #1 priority of all Autumn Aloft events.

Park City Trail Series
Half-Marathon
Round Valley @ 8 AM

The Park City Trail Series is a terrific way to explore trail running.

This is it – the final race in this year’s Park City Trail Series – the half-marathon! There’s nothing half about the accomplishment you’ll feel when you finish it, though!

The 13.1-mile course includes all terrain from the first three races in this series – plus all that extra distance, with the bonus of the cooler air at start time and the colors of the trees starting to change. Add to that the fact that you get to enjoy the balloons from Autumn Aloft at the start and it’s a half-marathon unlike any other in the world.

The Park City Trail Series is a 4-race series designed to introduce new trail runners to the sport. The series is a 5k, 10k, 15k, and 13.1 All of the events are on the Round Valley Trails in Park City, Utah. Due to the ease of terrain, these trail runs are designed with beginner users in mind.

The Red Bull 400
Varying Start Times 

This race is NOT for beginners – and is basically just for people who are gluttons for punishment. The fourth annual Red Bull 400 in the United States will be hosted at the Utah Olympic Park, and this year, it’s even HARDER, if that’s even possible.

Participants will run and race 400 meters, up the Nordic ski jump. That’s an elevation of 6,870 ft from the starting point (!!!). This will be the highest elevation Red Bull 400 has ever been. Register here, you crazy fools.

Art on the Trails
1 – 4 PM @ McCleod Creek Trails

Park City Summit County Arts Council is the presenter of this very unexpected creative experience! 

Art on the Trails will happen at 1 p.m. on Saturday, on a one-mile stretch of McLeod Creek Trail between Copper Moose Farm Stand and Temple Har Shalom. 

Along the way, you’ll encounter multiple pop-up creative performances (feel free to walk, bike, or run through!) like dance, classical music, folk music, spoken word poetry, and more. After you experience the artwork, stop by Copper Moose Stand to shop produce, grab a snack, enjoy live music, and learn more about PCSC Arts Council. Water will be provided at Copper Moose, as well as at stations on the trail.

The event is free and open to the public, all ages are welcome, and parking is available at the Willow Creek parking lot off of Old Ranch Rd.

Once Upon a Playground Exhibit

All those playground items we loved so much and injured ourselves on frequently as children – you know, metal slides, jungle gyms, seesaws, and the circle of misery known as merry-go-rounds  – have somehow been relegated to artifacts of our childhood. 

And, not only are they part of our personal histories, they’re examples of our country’s cultural (and industrial) design heritage. From the Park City Museum website:

“Once Upon a Playground offers a visual tribute to these vanishing playgrounds of our past, celebrating their place in American culture and the collective memories of generations.

The exhibit is co-curated by Brenda Biondo, author of Once Upon a Playground: A Celebration of Classic American Playgrounds, 1920–1975 (University Press of New England, 2014), and Carol Johnson, recently retired curator of photography at the Library of Congress, the exhibition combines contemporary photographs of classic equipment, vintage images of playground scenes from the Library of Congress’ collections, and images from period playground catalogs and other ephemera. By bringing together these diverse sources, the exhibition highlights a playground vernacular that developed over decades, while providing historical context and cultural insight.”

This lesser-known Autumn Aloft event is an awesome way to get up close and very personal with the balloons – well, their baskets and burners, anyway! 

Head over to Historic Main Street, between 4th and 5th streets (utilize the free public transportation if you can!) for 8 p.m. to see what the fuss is all about. You’ll find 8 balloon baskets and their burners – but no balloons – which create a large “candlestick” effect. Seeing these burners light up in the dark of a pre-autumn evening, in the middle of our picturesque Main Street, is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before

Tour Des Suds @ City Park
Bib pickup: 8:30 – 9:30 AM
Race begins: 10 AM 

Tour des Suds is a seven-mile mountain bike climb in crazy costumes. The fun begins at City Park, and, while there are prizes for the actual winners, it’s more of a scene than most mountain bike races…

However you play it, it’s 2,700′ of vertical straight up to the finish line, where finishers find the Skullcandy Party Station at the top of Guardsman Pass. After the race, there’s more fun back at City Park, with lunch and beverages provided by Red Rock Brewery, along with an opportunity drawing, costume contest, and those awards.

Park City Event Guide: Autumn Aloft 2018

The air is cool and crisp in the mornings and the skies are that brilliant blue hue that starts to show up in autumn… In Park City, that means it’s time to get ready for Autumn Aloft! The annual event happens this weekend, with various activities scattered around town. UP, UP AND AWAY

The Autumn Aloft balloon festival started more than 30 years ago and, with dozens of radiantly-colored balloons taking flight, it quickly became a must-see event (if you’ve ever experienced it, you know why!).

After a two-decade break, the event was resurrected in 2014 in its latest iteration. Thousands of people flock to the North 40 (behind Treasure Mountain Jr. High, off of Kearns Blvd.) to enjoy the Saturday and Sunday morning launches.

You may be familiar with the balloons (it’s hard to miss them, after all), but did you know there is also an up-close-and-personal Autumn Aloft event on Main Street to enjoy? We didn’t either. Take a look!

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS 

Morning Launch
Saturday, September 15 @ 8:00 am — You likely know all about this one. 24 hot air balloons in a dazzling array of colors, shapes, and sizes will take flight.

It’s best to arrive by about 7:45 a.m. to get positioned and to see the magic of watching the balloons fill up with air, load on their passengers, and lift off.

Make sure your batteries are charged on your phone or camera because you are going to want to take about 300 pictures.

If you want to share on social, there’s a photo contest being held by Pictureline, one of the event’s main sponsors. To participate, simply use the hashtag #pictureline along with the hashtag #autumnaloft in your posts. Pictureline even has cameras for attendees to borrow during Saturday’s launch; more on that a bit lower down.

There will also be free coffee and hot chocolate available, courtesy of Wells Fargo. Whatever you do, be sure to dress warmly – like we said, it’s getting chilly in the mornings!

After the launch, look for the RE/MAX balloon – they will take a number of people on tethered rides (the balloon is tethered to the ground, so you up just enough to experience a little balloon ride for yourself). There will be a sign-up sheet, and the opportunity is first-come, first served.

Evening Candlestick on Main Street
Saturday, September 15 @ 8:00 pm – This event is COOL. Head to Historic Main Street on Saturday evening, and you won’t be able to miss the setup.

Look for them between 4th and 5th Streets. There will be barricades up around balloon baskets, sans balloons, but with the fires burning bright! 

 

This is the annual “Candlestick” on Main Street. The burners are what keep the hot air balloons afloat, you can see and hear the flames from afar during the morning launches, but you’ll see them in a whole new way during this Saturday night experience, surrounded by the picturesque Main Street shops and restaurants.

To add to the fun, there will be a live D.J. and helium balloons so the kiddos can take a piece of the action home with them.

Sunday, September 16 @ 8:00 am – Second verse, similar to the first. Fewer people streaming onto the North 40 to see the balloons – but also be prepared for fewer amenities (e.g., no free coffee or hot cocoa on Sunday). But don’t let that deter you! Pictureline will be on-site for Saturday’s launch – and you can borrow some fabulous Nikon loaner gear! Try to bring your own SD card so you can hang onto your pictures. Simply head to the Pictureline tent as you walk toward the North 40 from the Treasure Mountain Jr. High parking lot.

PARKING & LOGISTICS

Saturday and Sunday’s launch events will take place on the North 40 Playing Fields, directly behind TMJH. You may park at Park City High School – including at the Eccles Center. No pets, smoking or drones at Autumn Aloft – and the organization reminds us that hot air balloon events are subject to weather conditions including wind speeds. Wind conditions that may impact a hot air balloon vary based on venue, wind direction, and gusts.

Small Business Highlight: Mountain Town Olive Oil

No matter the weather, when you step up the stairs and into Mountain Town Olive Oil’s new space on Historic Main Street, it feels like walking into a cozy home on a blustery day, and you can’t help but want to relax and stay a spell.

Head on up the stairs to discover Mountain Town Olive Oil.

Wherever the walls aren’t coated in a cheerful yellow, you’ll see warm, exposed brick, with accents of rough-hewn wood and metallic industrial touches throughout the store.

Most surfaces are pleasantly cluttered with Mountain Town Olive Oil (MTOO) offerings and accoutrements, select local products like Park City Granola Co., V’s Bees pure raw honey, and more.

As you make your way across the store, do yourself a favor and stop for the sample of the day. Owner Jessica McCleary loves providing these as part of the olive oil experience. “People can engage with it before they buy and know that they love the product they are taking home.”

Adjacent to the samples, you’ll find row after row of olive oil and vinegar selections. Olive oils range from traditional to flavor-infused; the vinegars, from dark to fruity – to white.

The olive oil and vinegar products are stored in shiny tankards called “fustis.” The fusti system not only cuts back on storage space, allowing Jessica to dedicate her back area to community education (more on that later), it also keeps the business green. Reusable packaging is used at every opportunity, and customers who bring bottles in to refill from the fustis are offered a special discount.

MTOO is in the process of joining Recycle Utah’s green program, which guides local businesses working to craft sustainability plans and to help them increase existing green endeavors.

Along the back brick wall is where the spices are kept – there are notecards with descriptions, and if you are looking for guidance for a specific flavor or dish, don’t hesitate to ask for help!

RECIPES & COMMUNITY EDUCATION

Mountain Town Olive Oil’s mission is “…to provide our customers with the best olive oils and vinegars the planet has to offer,” but the service doesn’t stop there.

Not only are there cookbooks available inside the store, there are myriad recipes posted on the website. Appetizers, breakfast, brunch, dessert, gluten-free, marinades, vegan, sides, and so on. If you’re anything like we are, you’ll be clicking on the recipe for that fall favorite – pumpkin bread!

The Fresh Drizzle Blog takes MTOO awareness a step further, with posts like foods to eat to hydrate skin, to five things to know when purchasing olive oil, even a cautionary post about how to make sure you’re getting real olive oil!

Bring your friends and grab a seat!

Jessica feels very strongly about also providing face-to-face education about how to create food using MTOO’s products – but not because it’s so complicated. Just the opposite, in fact – the classes, from Olive Oil 101 class to the Next Course series, help people understand that it can be incredibly simple to put a healthy, flavorful meal together, whether you’re cooking for one or a dozen.

Classes and gatherings are held in the back of the store, where high-top tables and chairs, along with a demo cooking space, create a comfy, intimate area in which to enjoy learning about the subject at hand.

The learning space, however, can be what you make of it. Jessica tells us she’s fond of hosting private wine tasting events — and would love to have a regular yoga-and-champagne-tastings. Mountain Town Olive Oil relocated to Historic Main Streed in July. You’ll find the store and the community class space upstairs at 613 Main Street. Hours vary seasonally, but you can usually find them open from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 12 – 5 p.m. on Sunday.

There has been so much buzz about “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” we’ll be surprised if there’s an open seat left for any one of this weekend’s screenings. The film takes an intimate look at Fred Rogers, known to most of us as the zip-up-cardigan-wearing Mr. Rogers. This emotional film goes into the heart of the quietly revolutionary genius who was Mr. Rogers. Shows are at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

It’s family and dog-friendly – and is also known as ‘the world’s largest support group’ for those dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. Meet in the parking lot of the Park City Hospital to join the fun – and if you don’t have a pup, you can borrow one! Day-of registration is $50, make sure to head to the Blair Education Center inside to register and grab your packet. 100% of entry fees will be donated to Paws for Life Utah, which is a no-kill rescue shelter in Heber. Hike for Hunger

This annual event raises awareness about hunger issues locally – and globally. Each year, Park City’s Christian Center serves thousands of residents in Summit and Wasatch counties through local food pantries. The Christian Center also delivers healthy snacks to over 350 local students each month as part of the Snacks in Backpacks program.

Mindful Families Retreat

Back-to-school means busier schedules, tons of new adjustments and a change of season. The Mindful Families Retreat, which will be held in the LiVe Well Center, aims to help families restore a deep connection, which often gets lost in the shuffle.

This two-hour retreat is focused on elementary-school-aged children and their parents. Families will arm families with simple and effective mindfulness techniques through practices and language to increase communication, deepen connection, and reduce stress and anxiety. On Saturday, November 10th, a retreat for 9th and 10th graders and their parents will be held.

Mountain Town Olive Oil, in its new location since July, has started to create community-minded classes for Parkites – and visitors! Each weekend, a food and wine pairing class will be held with a professional chef in the generous event space behind the store.
