This film, reportedly Robert Redford’s very last as an actor, is based on the true story of Forrest Tucker. From the Park City Film website:
“…from his escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 – to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public.

Wrapped up in the pursuit are a detective who becomes captivated with Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and a woman who loves him in spite of his chosen profession. Starring Robert Redford, Sissy Spacek, and Casey Affleck.” Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m.; on Sunday, the film begins at 6 p.m.

Although they are forbidden to do it, Sebastian and Belle stow away on Pierre’s plane. After they are forced to make an emergency landing, the trio heads out on foot to search for Angelina. Book Club: Barbara Kingsolver’s “Unsheltered”
5 – 6 PM @ Dolly’s Bookstore

This book club is free and open to all who wish to attend – the only requirement is to have read the book! Even better, if you mention that you are planning to join in the discussion, you get 10% off if you purchase the title they’re talking about.

From the Dolly’s website, describing this month’s book, “Unsheltered”:
“How could two hardworking people do everything right in life, a woman asks, and end up destitute? Willa Knox and her husband followed all the rules as responsible parents and professionals, and have nothing to show for it but debts and an inherited brick house that is falling apart. The magazine where Willa worked has folded; the college where her husband had tenure has closed. Their dubious shelter is also the only option for a disabled father-in-law and an exasperating, free-spirited daughter. When the family’s one success story, an Ivy-educated son, is uprooted by tragedy he seems likely to join them, with dark complications of his own…

Unsheltered is the compulsively readable story of two families, in two centuries, who live at the corner of Sixth and Plum in Vineland, New Jersey, navigating what seems to be the end of the world as they know it. With history as their tantalizing canvas, these characters paint a startlingly relevant portrait of life in precarious times when the foundations of the past have failed to prepare us for the future.”

7 PM @ Jim Santy Auditorium

“If you’re human – you’re biased. Now what?”

This free screening also has a post-film panel with:
– Director Robin Hauser
– Dr. Marco Barker, Associate Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer at Westminster College
– Sadie Ortiz, PCHS Senior and member of Teen Council, Latinos in Action and Bright Futures

Small Business Highlight: Motherlode Park City

December 2, 2018 by Shelby Hintze, Colony PR

“My Grandma went to **insert whatever location here** and all I got was this t-shirt.”

You’ve seen them all before–the semi-tacky souvenir t-shirt in every airport newsstand, museum gift shop, and boardwalk souvenir shack. You can find basically the exact same shirt in any city across the country. As unique as all cities are, shouldn’t its souvenirs reflect that—for tourists and locals alike?

On a trip to Big Sky Resort in Montana, Jesse Santaularia came across a t-shirt shop selling apparel that was unique and represented the area. He wondered why there wasn’t something like that in Park City, his adopted home. Jesse had worked as a lawyer for years in New York City but left when he decided to live the ski bum life. After a few trips to Park City, he knew that should be his new home base.

Despite zero experience in apparel design, he and partner Alex Lowe taught themselves to screen print and started testing out some designs. They sold products at local markets and started to gather a following. In 2016, they opened up the Motherlode storefront on Main Street. The shop carries unique apparel – items you definitely won’t find at other stores – and is perfectly representative of the city’s vibe.

Jesse told the Park Record “Obviously there are a lot of tourists that come in, and I want to give them something that’s, like, I call it original Park City nostalgia. We want to give people something that’s made here and that they’re going to remember in 10 years… It’s just souvenirs, but it’s something that was created here and made here.”

See a design you like but want it on a different shirt? They can do that for you. And beyond the pre-designed apparel, about half of Motherlode’s business is doing custom work for clients; they’ve even helped us with projects here at The Colony!

Opening a new business or have a family reunion coming up? In-house designer Parker Jones will help you come up with a design, and then they will screenprint it for you. You can also get your design transferred via vinyl, perfect for jerseys, and outerwear or stickers and window clings.

They can also transfer images on to a shirt—perfect for gifts or other small orders. Motherlode has clients all over the city, from Freshie’s to St. Regis. Oh, and, it’s worth mentioning that the t-shirts they sell are the softest, most comfortable we’ve ever come across.

Motherlode is located on Lower Main Street in the Summit Watch Plaza at 710 Main Street. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday – Sunday with varying hours on Monday. Find them online at motherlodepc.com and on social as @motherlodepc .

Park City Institute Presents:
National Geographic Live! Point of No Return with Hilaree Nelson
7:30 PM @ Eccles Center (PCHS)

From the Park City Institute website:
“In the fall of 2014, a National Geographic team set out on what they knew would be a harrowing journey to the summit of Burma’s Hkakabo Razi to determine if it is indeed Southeast Asia’s highest point. What they  didn’t realize was that the greatest obstacle wouldn’t be their dwindling rations, or the grueling jungle hikes, or the life-threatening hypothermia. It was the force of conflicting personalities that threatened to unravel the entire endeavor. Leader Hilaree Nelson recounts the tough decisions she had to make to keep the team together, accompanied by photographer Cory Richard’s dramatic stills and clips from Renan Ozturk’s searing documentary Down to Nothing.”
~

Stand-Up Comedy
8 PM @ The Egyptian Theatre

Co-headliners Frank Lucero & Brian Hicks will lead a night full of adult humor – and beverages. You don’t have to be 21 to attend, but you do have to be 21 to purchase booze. Buy tickets HERE.

Park City Institute Presents: Red Molly
7:30 PM @ Eccles Center (PCHS)

From the website: “The Americana powerhouse vocal trio arrives on our stage with gorgeous harmonies, crisp musicianship, infectious songwriting, and warm, engaging stage presence. Laurie MacAllister (bass), Abbie Gardner  (Dobro), and Molly Venter (guitar) weave together the threads of American music — from folk roots to bluegrass, from heartbreaking ballads to barn-burning honky tonk — as effortlessly as they blend their caramel voices into their signature soaring, crystalline three-part harmonies. Equal parts concert performance and living-room jam session, the musical storytelling will heat up a cold winter’s night.”

Park City Film Presents:
“The Man Who Invented Christmas”
4 PM @ Jim Santy Auditorium

As part of its Books 2 Movies series, this film will screen for free at the Jim Santy Auditorium in the Park City Library. From the website: “‘The Man Who Invented Christmas’ tells the magical journey that led to the creation of Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and other classic characters from Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol.’ Directed by Bharat Nalluri the film shows how Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) mixed real-life inspirations with his vivid imagination to conjure up unforgettable characters and a timeless tale, forever changing the holiday season into the celebration we know today.”
~

Park City Film Presents: “Colette”
8 PM @ Jim Santy Auditorium

The story of Colette, who married a successful Parisian writer. In an interesting turn of events, her husband convinces her to ghostwrite for him, and the novel (which she wrote in a semi-autobiographical way) is a smash. The couple becomes the talk of Paris and she writes additional novels. Of course, the clash comes when Colette begins to chafe against creative ownership and societal constraints.

The Art and Science of Arachnids
Swaner Preserve & EcoCenter
Wednesdays – Sundays: 10 AM – 4 PM

This exhibit is seriously catching people in its net – and it just so happens to be the largest arachnid exhibit in the United States.

The exhibit guides visitors to explore connections between arachnids and literature, art, folklore, paleontology, science, and history. You’ll see 100 live arachnids (!) and experience hands-on activities – hopefully, the live arachnids are not the hands-on activities, but you’ll have to go see it in order to find out. INSIDER TIP: They feed the spiders on Thursdays – so that is a great time to go see some action.

This exhibit is available to read and listen to in both Spanish and English, and is free for members; for pricing and other info, click here.

Summer’s not going to be fashionably late this year—she’s already sneaking in. The trails are greening up, wildflowers are stretching, and the puffy coats are officially in storage. Who’s ready for long hikes and longer days?
