After this week’s rain and the (finally) bright fall colors – there’s SNOW in the weekend forecast! If you haven’t gotten out your warm-weather clothes, now’s the time. While snow may not be a guarantee this weekend, here are some events you can definitely count on to happen.

The annual Park City Dine About is in full swing! 24 Park City restaurants are participating – which means, throughout the course of the two-week event, you get to take advantages of seasonal (hugely discounted) two-course lunches and three-course dinners at these spots. With the discount, lunches will end up at about $10 or $15 per person. The three-course dinners will only set you back between $20 and $40 per person!

Backroads Americana by Tom Kelly
6 – 9 PM @ Artique Gallery

Park City’s own renowned landscape photographer Tom Kelly is back with a new gallery show! This one takes a look at rural scenes discovered on back road highways. From the wide-open deserts and plains of the west to the cornfields of America’s heartland, his images show the countryside we usually miss in our travels. You’ll find the Artique Gallery at 283 N. Main St, Kamas. Tom’s exhibit runs through October 31, 2018.

“Eighth Grade” Screening

Presented by Park City Film Series

This one has gotten a lot of buzz – and the San Francisco Chronicle calls it “A beautiful and uncompromising piece of art…”

“Eighth Grade” is the feature film debut from comedian Bo Burnham, and is said to be a moving and darkly funny film. It follows thirteen-year-old Kayla, who endures the tidal wave of emotions that follow her through the last weeks of middle school–the end of her eighth-grade year before she begins high school.

The Park City Film Series says: “This is a unique and genuine coming of age film about the plight of young kids today in an internet-saturated world that forces them to grow up faster than they can handle.”

“Eighth Grade” premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. The show plays 8PM Friday and Saturday; 6 PM Sunday.

This is the only trail 5K in Summit County! The South Summit Trails Foundation says it’s challenging, fun, and beautiful! Register HERE – and then stay for the Harvest Fest fun.

12 – 5 PM @ High Star Ranch

Join in the fall fun at the 9th Annual Harvest Festival at the High Star Ranch in Kamas!

The Harvest Fest will feature food from Lola’s Street Kitchen, Praise Cheezus, DeJoria Center, Tacos el Sombrero, and Wasatch Creamery. Adults can also enjoy Wasatch Brewery beer served by Deer Valley Resort bartenders, and there will be live music from Che Zuro, Streetcorner Boogie and Honky Blue Tonky.

Families will be able to buy apples and pumpkins, take wagon rides, and enjoy shopping for local goods from dozens of vendors. The Harvest Fest is put on by Recycle Utah and functions as one of its major fundraisers. The outdoor fair is meant to promote sustainable living by showcasing local businesses and entrepreneurs.

Part of fall fun is getting ready for Halloween – and what could be more spooky than the Utah Paranormal Expo?

The event is described as a way to “explore phenomena folklore, mythology, supernatural, and other non-scientific bodies of knowledge, whose existence within these contexts is described to lie beyond normal experience or scientific explanation.

The most notable paranormal beliefs include those that pertain to ghosts, extraterrestrial life, unidentified flying objects, psychic abilities or extrasensory perception, and other paranormal subjects.”

There will be celebrity panels and presentations, activities throughout the day, and a discussion forum. The event is family-friendly, and kids 12 and under are free.

Paint the Town Blue
11AM – 1:30 PM
The Market at Park City

The wives of the Park City Police Department are handing out blue ribbons and blue lines for cars to help the community show appreciation to our local law enforcement officers. You’ll also have the chance to personally thank a police officer.

“Paint the Town Blue” is an event that invites the whole community to decorate businesses and homes in blue for the entire day of October 6.

What could be more fun than Odyssey Dance Theatre’s Thriller, dancing monsters and raging maniacs? The only thing we can think of is reduce pricing – which is in effect this weekend only. Because of the content of the show, it’s recommended for children 12 and up. Most shows are at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday shows begin at 6. The show runs through October 7.

The Art and Science of Arachnids
Swaner Preserve & EcoCenter
Wednesdays – Sundays: 10 AM – 4 PM

The largest arachnid exhibit in the United States is right here in our backyard through December.

The exhibit guides visitors to explore connections between arachnids and literature, art, folklore, paleontology, science, and history. You’ll see 100 live arachnids (!) and experience hands-on activities – hopefully, the live arachnids are not the hands-on activities, but you’ll have to go see it in order to find out.

Body and Soul
Kimball Art Center
Through November 4

Never in history have we (ok, some of us) been more inundated with images – at least from a social media perspective. Landscapes, pictures of home design and architecture, candids (does such a thing even exist anymore?) but especially the new self-portrait – those supernumerary selfies – are shared and consumed relentlessly across social channels.

Kimball Art Center’s new exhibit, Body and Soul, features 24 Utah-based artists and explores the lasting power of what you could call the “legit-art selfie” genre across contemporary painting, photography, text-based installations, and more. From the Kimball Art Center website:

“Established tropes are both embraced and reinvented, presenting diverse approaches to portraiture as a means of commemoration, reflection, and social critique. From faithful likeness to fantasy and fracture, the power of portraits is that they are about more than what we look like; they reveal who we are.”

Admission is free; the exhibit will run through November 4.

Precision Medicine in Cancer and Beyond

Precision medicine is the use of an individual’s personal health history, family history, and genomic information to develop a personalized health treatment plan.

Intermountain Precision Genomics has implemented precision medicine in oncology, primary care, and mental health, and says it’s yielding exciting outcomes for patients.

The speaker, Dr. Lincoln Nadauld, is the Director of Precision Medicine and Precision Genomics at Intermountain Healthcare. He oversees the clinical implementation of genomic cancer medicine across its 23 hospitals and 180 physician clinics.

An RSVP for this event is not required but greatly appreciated.

By this time the last year, it had already snowed a few times. This year, we’re enjoying a bit of a blissful autumn. Our trees have faded into subdued golden shades, it’s chilly enough in the mornings for a hearty, heavy sweater but warms up with the wonderful sunshine throughout the day, and you’ve likely had a few pumpkin spice lattes (we won’t tell).

This weekend could be considered a quiet one by Park City standards (though there is still much to do, as ever, in our fabulous ski town). So grab your PSL, pull on your sweater (but be sure to wear short sleeves underneath!), and get out there to enjoy our community!

This morning, join the “Pride in our Community” Fall Cleanup Event, hosted by Recycle Utah, Park City Municipal and Summit County.

Once Upon a Playground Exhibit

All those playground items we loved so much and injured ourselves on frequently as children – you know, metal slides, jungle gyms, seesaws, and the circle of misery known as merry-go-rounds – have somehow been relegated to artifacts of our childhood.

And, not only are they part of our personal histories, they’re examples of our country’s cultural (and industrial) design heritage. From the Park City Museum website:

“Once Upon a Playground offers a visual tribute to these vanishing playgrounds of our past, celebrating their place in American culture and the collective memories of generations.

The exhibit is co-curated by Brenda Biondo, author of Once Upon a Playground: A Celebration of Classic American Playgrounds, 1920–1975 (University Press of New England, 2014), and Carol Johnson, recently retired curator of photography at the Library of Congress, the exhibition combines contemporary photographs of classic equipment, vintage images of playground scenes from the Library of Congress’ collections, and images from period playground catalogs and other ephemera. By bringing together these diverse sources, the exhibition highlights a playground vernacular that developed over decades, while providing historical context and cultural insight.”

This Matchstick Productions’ 2018 ski film is said to present a “first-of-its-kind experience.” From the Park City Film Series:

“The concept was spearheaded by a talented group of hard-charging women who wanted to disrupt the male-dominated ski film formula. This isn’t your typical “Women can shred too” film, this is a kick-ass ski film that just happens to feature as many women as men. Throughout the summer, the Summit Land Conservancy leads guided hikes in Park City’s preserved open spaces to collect hops – one of the key ingredients in beer. Even if you didn’t tag along for hops hunting, you can still reap the benefits at the annual Hoppy Hour party at Wasatch Brew Pub tonight, as they release the “Clothing Hoptional” brew made from the harvest. We are nearing the end of this seasonal Saturday walk. Grab a coffee and join the guided group to explore the wetlands at Swaner Preserve. The guide comes armed with information about the wetlands, native plants, and all the animal species you’ll see as you walk through the Preserve. This weekly event ends September 30.

The North Face Endurance Challenge
September 22 & 23

North Face isn’t joking when they call this an Endurance Challenge. This specific race starts at the highest elevation within the North America series – at 7,000 feet – but it also CLIMBS to the highest elevation of 10,000 feet. The race doesn’t pull any punches – after you crest the first HUGE hill, which begins immediately, by the way, you’ll make your way along the Wasatch Back while you navigate a mix of single- and double-track trails, ski runs, and various dirt roads at Park City Mountain.

Human Curling
5 – 6:30 PM @ Park City Ice Arena

In normal curling, you slide stones across the ice and onto a target. In HUMAN curling – you slide… what else – yourself! And if that doesn’t sound good enough – this event is FREE. You can register online or by calling 435.615.5707. Wear warm clothing, a helmet, and rubber-soled shoes – you must be at least 12 years old to participate.

Scarecrow Festival
2 – 4 PM @ McPolin Farm

Did you know you can create a scarecrow to be featured at the festival? Join the fun at McPolin Farm to build your very own scarecrow – which will be on display through October 19th.

The event includes pumpkin painting, face painting, stuffing for your scarecrow (along with the cross to hang it upon), games, and cookies.

The air is cool and crisp in the mornings and the skies are that brilliant blue hue that starts to show up in autumn… In Park City, that means it’s time to get ready for Autumn Aloft! The annual event happens this weekend, with various activities scattered around town. Read on for what you can do, when, and where, to celebrate Autumn Aloft 2018. UP, UP AND AWAY

The Autumn Aloft balloon festival started more than 30 years ago and, with dozens of radiantly-colored balloons taking flight, it quickly became a must-see event (if you’ve ever experienced it, you know why!).

After a two-decade break, the event was resurrected in 2014 in its latest iteration. Thousands of people flock to the North 40 (behind Treasure Mountain Jr. High, off of Kearns Blvd.) to enjoy the Saturday and Sunday morning launches.

You may be familiar with the balloons (it’s hard to miss them, after all), but did you know there is also an up-close-and-personal Autumn Aloft event on Main Street to enjoy? We didn’t either. Take a look!

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Morning Launch
Saturday, September 15 @ 8:00 am — You likely know all about this one. 24 hot air balloons in a dazzling array of colors, shapes, and sizes will take flight.

It’s best to arrive by about 7:45 a.m. to get positioned and to see the magic of watching the balloons fill up with air, load on their passengers, and lift off.

Make sure your batteries are charged on your phone or camera because you are going to want to take about 300 pictures.

If you want to share on social, there’s a photo contest being held by Pictureline, one of the event’s main sponsors. To participate, simply use the hashtag #pictureline along with the hashtag #autumnaloft in your posts. Pictureline even has cameras for attendees to borrow during Saturday’s launch; more on that a bit lower down.

There will also be free coffee and hot chocolate available, courtesy of Wells Fargo. Whatever you do, be sure to dress warmly – like we said, it’s getting chilly in the mornings!

After the launch, look for the RE/MAX balloon – they will take a number of people on tethered rides (the balloon is tethered to the ground, so you up just enough to experience a little balloon ride for yourself). There will be a sign-up sheet, and the opportunity is first-come, first served.

Evening Candlestick on Main Street
Saturday, September 15 @ 8:00 pm – This event is COOL. Head to Historic Main Street on Saturday evening, and you won’t be able to miss the setup.

Look for them between 4th and 5th Streets. There will be barricades up around balloon baskets, sans balloons, but with the fires burning bright!

This is the annual “Candlestick” on Main Street. The burners are what keep the hot air balloons afloat, you can see and hear the flames from afar during the morning launches, but you’ll see them in a whole new way during this Saturday night experience, surrounded by the picturesque Main Street shops and restaurants.

To add to the fun, there will be a live D.J. and helium balloons so the kiddos can take a piece of the action home with them.

Sunday, September 16 @ 8:00 am – Second verse, similar to the first. Fewer people streaming onto the North 40 to see the balloons – but also be prepared for fewer amenities (e.g., no free coffee or hot cocoa on Sunday). But don’t let that deter you! Fill up your travel mug and zip on over here to enjoy the balloons – fewere people usually means better pictures!

Speaking of which -all Autumn Aloft attendees are encouraged to participate in Pictureline’s annual Autumn Aloft photo contest! Three winners will win a Benro Travel Tripod and a Pictureline gift card for $50, $100, or $150.

Pictureline will be on-site for Saturday’s launch – and you can borrow some fabulous Nikon loaner gear! Try to bring your own SD card so you can hang onto your pictures. Simply head to the Pictureline tent as you walk toward the North 40 from the Treasure Mountain Jr. High parking lot.

PARKING & LOGISTICS

Saturday and Sunday’s launch events will take place on the North 40 Playing Fields, directly behind TMJH. You may park at Park City High School – including at the Eccles Center. Additional off-site parking will be available at the China Bridge parking lots in Historic Park City with free public transportation available. A map of the event venue can be viewed here. No pets, smoking or drones at Autumn Aloft – and the organization reminds us that hot air balloon events are subject to weather conditions including wind speeds. Wind conditions that may impact a hot air balloon vary based on venue, wind direction, and gusts.

Late Season Activities @ Park City Mountain

We are closing in on the first day of fall – September 22 – but there are a few weeks of summer fun to be had at Park City Mountain. Activities are still running – albeit under a late-season schedule, which means the slides slip and the coaster launches Thursday – Sunday only.

Here’s a look at what you and your family can enjoy until summer activities stop for the season on September 30.

MOUNTAIN BIKING AND HIKING

Two of our favorite summer activities on the mountain are self-guided; lace up or velcro your preferred shoe, and take advantage of the miles of trails networking through Park City Mountain (some of them take you through The Colony, too!).

Hiking: Whether you’re walking or running, the trails are equal opportunity stunners. Grab a trail map and escape in into the mountains – trekking through the trees is the perfect way to cool off on a hot day, and there are options for all levels of ability.

Mountain Biking: Shredding applies in summer, too, and the beauty of activities at the resort is that there are options for support if you need it! You can rent mountain bikes at the Village, then hop on Crescent or Pay Day Chairlift so you can focus on the downhill. Bike haul tickets are also available for purchase.

ALPINE SLIDE & ALPINE COASTER

Alpine Slide: More than 3,000 feet of WHEE!: PCM’s Alpine Slide is among the longest in the world. And with three tracks to choose from, each luge-like launch is a different experience.

Alpine Coaster: Prefer a mountain ride on rails? Buckle into the Alpine Coaster. The winding track slings you through more than a mile of mountainside; carving and looping at speeds up to 30 mph. And if you want to slow down and enjoy the incredible scenery, there’s an easy-to-reach brake on your coaster car.

ZIP LINES

If being above the treetops is more your thing, zip lines at Park City Mountain will make it happen. Relish the views at 110 feet off the ground, and enjoy the wind in your face as you’re propelled at speeds up to 45 mph. The Flying Eagle is a two-seater, and the ZipRider™is a fun chance to race your friends.

MINI GOLF & ADVENTURE ZONE

Catch your breath at the base of the Village and enjoy an 18-hole round of miniature golf. And if the kids want to see more action while you’re puttering around, there are seven other ways for you to tucker them out before it’s time to tuck them into bed.

Legacy Launcher – four trampolines (with safety harnesses) let the kiddos bounce all their energy out – and safely try tricks under supervision.
Kids’ Zip – avoid the too-small-for-the-big-zip-line meltdown and head straight here for full-scale thrills at a size that’s perfect for your little one.
Kids’ Rope Course – another age and size-appropriate way for kids to safely try some big challenges.
Boulders – the smallest climbers can experience Southern Utah terrain from the comfort of Park City.
Climbing Wall – safety climbing harnesses and trained attendants give kids a chance to explore scaling a big-time wall – with five different routes to try.
Kids’ Tubing – tubing is now a summer sport; no need for snow to experience this adventure!
Gem Panning – experience Park City’s mining legacy while you pan for gems in the interactive flume.

WEEKLY @ THE VILLAGE

While the music has stopped, you have plenty of time left to score local produce and products at the Park City Farmers Market. You can enjoy this on Wednesdays in the Silver King Parking Lot. The Farmers Market’s last day is Wednesday, October 17.

OPENING DAY WINTER 2018/2019

Both Park City Mountain Village and Canyons Village are scheduled to open for the 2018/2019 winter season on Wednesday, November 21.
