Local’s Guide to PCMR

March 26, 2018 by Colony PR

Here’s how we make the most of our day on the hill.

Best View:

Some of the best views are from the top of McConkey Express and if you are an expert skier, Jupiter lift. From the top of both lifts, you can enjoy almost a 360-degree view of the Wasatch Mountains: Mt. Timpanogos (locals call it “Timp” for short), the backside of Brighton Resort, and Bonanza Flats – which was just preserved as open space thanks to a $38 million campaign. You will see the Uinta Mountain range to the east, and of course the town of Park City below. Don’t forget your camera or selfie stick.

Best Lunch:

This one’s a toss-up. Our favorite is Tombstone Grill and their incredible barbeque. You can smell the mouth-watering grill from several lifts away, so this is not exactly a secret.

The other not-to-miss spot is The Viking Yurt. Easily accessible from Bonanza (as well as a dozen or so other lifts that access same the ridge) soups, sandwiches and fresh cookies are a perfect midday snack. The separately owned Yurt is one of the few on-mountain dining locations with full-strength beer and liquor. Anyone for hot toddy’s?

Favorite Trails:

Ask 10 people what their favorite trails are, and you’ll likely get ten different answers. What do you expect from one of the largest and best resorts in North America? We’re going to go with Creole & Quit’n Time, mainly for the fact that you can ski directly into town. Few other resorts offer both a base village and a historic town that you can make turns right onto the sidewalk, which really sets Park City Mountain Resort apart. A great lunch choice is to ski down to High West Distillery and take Town Lift back up for some afternoon turns.

Apres:

Sunny day? The patio at Corner Store.
Chilly day? Inside at Corner Store.
Live music? Corner Store.
Patio Heaters? Cor….you get the idea!

Best Way to Ski Home:

Living ski-in-ski-out, at The Colony, has many advantages – and being able to ski to and from your front door ranks high on the list. Park City has luxury real estate options across the valley, but The Colony is one of the few to offer slopeside mountain homes with privacy and open space as well.

Our game plan is to make the last run of the day a longer one by taking Ninety-Nine 90 up, or Peak 5 if you want a shorter option, and make your way home via Showcase, Serenity or Crowning Glory. It really depends on where your home is, of course. It can be quite amusing for Colony residents when a neighbor asks “Where do you live?” you can respond with either a street address or a ski run!

Secret Stash:

This is why you read this far, correct? Where to find powder. Here are our favorite powder fields:

Cobalt Wood and Platinum Woods on Iron Mountain Express see less traffic than other parts of the mountain, so we like to head there on a powder day.
Tree Time, off the Sun Peak lift, is another favorite since that lift serves mostly intermediate terrain, the stepper tree shots don’t get skied as often.
For intermediate skiers, Snow Meadow on Dreamscape Chair is a great option for fresh turns. The ski-in-ski-out access that The Colony homes provide gives residents an advantage, and a head start on powder. Enjoy!

Weekend of March 16-18

March 15, 2018 by Colony PR

It’s St. Patrick’s Day weekend, so expect plenty of green on the slopes Saturday, along with some free concerts! Our pick for Corned Beef & Cabbage is at Flanagan’s on Main – get there early, as it’s always a packed house on St. Patty’s.

Apres Ski: Spring Concert Series

Park City Mountain Resort continues their Spring Concert Series this Saturday. Catch Rage Against the Supremes (not a typo) at Payday and Tony Holiday & The Velvetones on the Canyons Village Stage. Both concerts are free from 3-5PM on Saturday, March 17.

Listen: Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone.

The legendary 60’s English beat rock band plays four shows on Main Street at the Egyptian Theater. Dust off the old records, and reacquaint yourself with favorites such as “I’m Into Something Good” and “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter.”

8 PM. March 15-17
6 PM. March 18
Tickets

Watch: The Insult

The Park City Film Series shows The Insult, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In today’s Beirut, a civilian dispute blown out of proportion finds a Lebanese Christian and a Palestinian refugee, facing off in court. As the media circus surrounding the case threatens a social explosion in divided Lebanon, Tony and Yasser reconsider their values and beliefs as revelations of trauma complicate their understanding of one another.

8 PM. March 9 & 10 – 8 PM
6 PM. March 11.

See: Mountain Trails Gallery

Long recognized as one of the premier fine art galleries of the West, Mountain Trails Gallery proudly represents many of the most renowned contemporary and western artists of our time. The gallery features an eclectic mix of representational and impressionist paintings and sculpture as well as a broad selection of western artifact reproductions. Several new Native American portraits are currently on display, as well as several stunning landscapes.

301 Main Street

Eat: Deer Valley’s Fireside Dining and Seafood Buffet

Deer Valley closes on Sunday, April 8th, and with that, two of our favorites: Fireside Dining and Seafood Buffet. Offering local favorites from the European Alps in the heart of Deer Valley, Fireside Dining features four courses served from our stone fireplaces at Empire Canyon Lodge.

Seafood Buffet, located at Snow Park Lodge, serves a vast array of fresh seafood including poke bar, chilled shellfish, hot seafood appetizers and entrées, carvery specials, vegetable specialties and prime rib along with a baker’s dozen of housemade desserts.

The Colony Gives Back

March 14, 2018 by Colony PR

Giving back to our local community is one of the most rewarding feelings we can have. The Colony, including residents and agents, believe in the credo of “doing well, by doing good.” Last week two of our agents, Bronson Calder and Kurt Peterson, spent an hour on KPCW radio to raise funds for the station during KPCW’s Winter Pledge Drive. They were able to raise funds that keep non-profit community stations on the air.

If you are looking for ways to participate in a philanthropic sense in your Park City community, here are a few of the organizations The Colony works with to support and further their missions.

KPCW Community Radio Connection
On-air since 1980, the aforementioned KPCW (91.9 FM Radio) reaches 73% of all adults in the Summit and Wasatch counties of Utah at least once a week, twelve times more than any other radio station in the area. KPCW also “streams” its programs via its website to listeners around the world. Tune into KPCW for local information and stay tuned for annual pledge drive information with The Colony as an on-air sponsor. KPCW radio is a non-profit, volunteer supported organization whose mission is to educate, inform, entertain and provide access to a diverse community with quality local, national and international programming.

Peace House
Peace House is a non-profit organization located in Park City, Utah, established in 1995. Through education, shelter and support services, Peace House empowers women to break the cycle of domestic violence in their own lives and those of their children. Peace House also reaches out to individuals and groups within the service area of Summit and Wasatch Counties with education and awareness programs to help break the cycle of domestic violence in communities.

Mountain Trails Foundation
Mountain Trails Foundation promotes and preserves trail access for all non-motorized users and maintains the robust trail system in the Park City area. This includes the acclaimed 26-mile “Mid-Mountain Trail,” which runs through The Colony and has been designated an “Epic Trail” by the International Mountain Biking Association. The Colony promotes trail access for public and private use and is proud to support MTF.

Youth Winter Sports Alliance
The Mission of The Alliance is to support winter sports activities for youth in Summit and Wasatch counties, promoting good sportsmanship and healthy lifestyles through participation, education, and competition. The Colony supports YWSA through their annual fundraiser event each autumn.

People’s Health Clinic
People’s Health Clinic is a non-profit, primary care facility that provides high-quality medical services to uninsured individuals and families in Summit and Wasatch Counties. Patients are seen by appointment, and a donation is requested at each visit, yet no one is turned away for inability to pay.

Park City: The Home of Past, Present and Future Olympic Athletes

February 20, 2018 by Colony PR

The 2002 Olympic Winter Games were officially held in Salt Lake City. Ask any fellow local where the Games were held and they will respond with “Park City!” Which makes sense, since most alpine skiing events were held at our two resorts, as well as bobsled, luge, and skeleton, along with Nordic jumping over the Olympic Park. Plus, all the cross-country events took place just around the corner at Soldier Hollow in Midway.

Our local newspaper, The Park Record, published an excellent article highlighting the legacy of the Games: a tradition our town carries on today.

The venues that began opening in the early nineties ushered in an era where athletes from across the world would relocate to Park City to train, Take for example gold medalists Nikki Stone and Eric Bergous, who both won gold in 1998 after relocating from Boston and Montana, respectively.

This makes complete sense since Park City was one of two American towns with bobsled, luge and skeleton tracks, but we also had alpine skiing and Nordic facilities, including a pool, for athletes to train.

Fast forward to 2002 where Park City locals had a front row seat to the Games, which included medaling performances by Shannon Barhke, Jonny Moseley, and Travis Mayer. Local children left the Game inspired to try the same sports, launching a new crop of Olympic athletes.

Do you recognize the names Ted Ligety, Joss Christensen, and Sage Kotsenburg? Yes, they all have gold medals in common. But they are also each a product of our Park City community. We’re proud to call this gold medal town our home.

The Park Record does a great job of chronicling the newest crop of Park City athletes, such as Madison Olsen, who will compete in PyeongChang. The legacy of 2002 lives on through the dreams and accomplishments of our local athletes like Madison. And keep an eye out for familiar faces on the podium – there is a good chance they are one of our neighbors!

Park City Events: Weekend of Feb 16-19

February 16, 2018 by Colony PR

Listen:

Chubby Checker, yes THAT Chubby Checker brings his #1 hit “The Twist” to The Egyptian Theatre on Main Street for four nights (Thurs – Sun). Don’t miss seeing a legend live, including an opportunity to show off your twisting skills on stage with Chubby himself.

Do:

If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at ceramics, Kimball Art Center offers an open clay studio event each Friday. Perfect for first-timers, you’ll begin with a wheel throwing demonstration (don’t worry, it’s much easier than it sounds), and can then create anything you wish. Space is limited, so it may be a worth a call before heading over.
435.649.8882

Watch:

I, Tonya, the life story of figure skater Tonya Harding, plays for three nights (Fri-Sun) at the Jim Sandy Auditorium. The film, directed by Craig Gillespie, covers everything from Harding’s Olympic career to her life following the attack on fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan.

Play:

President’s Day is roughly the mid-point of the ski season. So, if you haven’t done it yet, book a day of heli-skiing with Wasatch Powderbird Guides. With locations at Snowbird Resort and in Park City, Powderbird’s gets you to the goods – fast!

Olympics:

We called around town to find a few places to catch up on the Games. Here are our picks:

No Name Saloon, Butcher’s Chop House & Bar, and Boneyard & Wine Dive will be airing the games at all three locations. Butcher’s does have a 166″ projector screen as well.

The Eating Establishment will be airing the Olympics on all three of their TVs, from opening to closing ceremonies.

Fletchers will have the Olympics on as well, with the lounge being a great place to watch the Games.

Deer Valley Resort will have TV’s set up in the EBS lounge, and also the clock room for viewing anytime.

Versante at Park City Peaks Hotel will offer food and drink specials during the Games, with live action on several TV’s.

Billy Blanco’s (at the Jeremy Ranch exit) will be showing all the Olympic action on their 8+ large HDTVs.

Sixteen Years Later the 2002 Olympic Traditions and Cultures Live On!

February 12, 2018 by Colony PR

The Park City area played host to most of the alpine and freestyle ski events during the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games. It’s hard to believe the Games were held sixteen years ago, as the Olympic tradition lives strong each day in Park City. In fact, you can easily experience many of the venues today to walk, ski and sled in the footsteps of past competitors.

Deer Valley

Deer Valley Resort hosted the freestyle moguls and aerials, as well as slalom, in 2002. Take Carpenter lift from the Snow Park base area and look left: that is Champion, the site of freestyle moguls, and its neighbor Know You Don’t, site of alpine slalom. You’ll also pass over White Owl, where the freestyle aerials were held (it’s the run with the small rope tow/Poma lift). All three of these runs can be skied in their non-competitive form.

Park City Resort

During the 2002 games PCMR hosted both men’s and women’s GS (giant slalom), as well as the men’s and women’s snowboarding GS and halfpipe events. The Eagle Race Arena and Eagle Superpipe were used as Olympics venues. Ironically the 22-foot high Eagle Superpipe looms above the First Time (bunny) slope area and is still kept in competition specifications at over 500 feet. The Superpipe annually hosts Grand Prix, World Cup, and other qualifying events.

Utah Olympic Park

The Olympic Park, located in Kimball Junction, was the venue for bobsled, luge, and skeleton, as well as ski jumping. Today, the venue is used year-round as a world-class training ground for Olympic hopefuls, even providing rides with a professional on the bobsled track in both summer and winter if you are up for an adrenaline-inducing adventure!

The Park also houses two museums, the Alf Engen Ski Museum and the George Eccles Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games Museum. Visitors can see everything from medals to uniforms, as well as an Olympic torch in front of the cauldron.

Soldier Hollow

About 30 minutes away lies Soldier Hollow, host to the all the cross-country events: biathlon and Nordic combined. Due to its hour-plus distance from Salt Lake City, spectators during the Games had the option to arrive via railroad and sleigh ride and were treated to western-themed activities and shows between events. Today, cross-country skiing is available in winter and golfing on 36 holes in summer.

Aiming for something more? Register for the Biathlon Experience, where you’ll be coached to shoot a rifle similar to equipment Olympic athlete Sgt. Lawton Redman (featured image above) used the men’s 10km sprint biathlon race during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games on Feb. 13, 2002. (U.S. Navy photo by Journalist 1st Class Preston Keres).

Check back this Friday, as we round up our favorite places to cheer on other Park City locals during the Pyeongchang Olympic Games.

Summer’s not going to be fashionably late this year—she’s already sneaking in. The trails are greening up, wildflowers are stretching, and the puffy coats are officially in storage. Who’s ready for long hikes and longer days?
