Park City Athletes to Watch for in the 2018 Olympic Ceremony and Games

February 10, 2018 by Colony PR

We’re fortunate to live in an Olympic town where the Games were held less than two decades ago. Thanks to Park City – and Utah’s – foresight and fiscal planning, our home has built upon that tradition with the continued use of nearly all of the venues. Another great community legacy was the creation of the Youth Sports Alliance (YSA), whose goal is to increase the number of children participating in winter sports programs in the greater-Park City area. Imagine growing up with one of your “gym class” options the mogul course at Deer Valley, a quick hop in the Superpipe at Park City and or an afternoon ski jumping at Olympic Park. Not bad, right?

These opportunities have quickly bred a new crop of young skiers, snowboards, Nordic athletes and more hailing from Park City. Add to that the dozens of athletes with Olympic dreams who relocate to the Wasatch to train at the place we call home. The YSA, dubbed this collective “Park City Nation,” a group of athletes who will compete in PyeongChang with ties to Park City. The total? 54! Here are a few to keep your eyes peeled for in PyeongChang (and at the grocery store when they return home).

Ted Ligety

Ligety became just the fourth American male skier to win gold when he upset the field by winning the combined (downhill and slalom) at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy. The versatile Ligety took home gold, this time in giant slalom, in 2014 at Sochi.

Look for the three-time Olympian to compete in the slalom, giant slalom, Super-G, downhill and combined events in Pyeongchang.

Sarah Hendrickson

Park City High School grad, Sarah Hendrickson is heading into PyeongChang strong! Hendrickson won the women’s ski jumping competition at the Nordic Combined & Ski Jumping U.S. Olympic Team Trials in December.

After having solid seasons early in her career, with several World Cup podiums from 2011 – 2013, then being sidetracked by knee injuries, Hendrickson is poised for a solid Games. Her other claim to fame? Four years ago in Sochi, she was granted the historic honor of being the first female to ever jump in a ski jumping event at the Olympics. Women were finally allowed to compete and participate in Olympic ski jumping events for the first time in history in 2014.

Will Rhoads

22-year old Will Rhoads is a newcomer to the ski jumping scene. With only 17 individual starts and seven team starts under his belt, Rhoads could be a surprise story of the Olympics. Hey, there’s always a few medalists who seemingly come out of nowhere, right? Keep your eyes and ears peeled for his name.

Rhoads has continually improved his standings in his few short years in competition and is looking to top his personal best of 200m in Pyeongchang.

Bradley Wilson

Wilson is gearing up for his second Olympics, having also competed in Sochi. The Wilson name may also sound familiar, as he is the younger brother of Olympic bronze medalist Bryon Wilson. Let’s hope the Wilson family is adding some additional hardware to their trophy cabinet in a few weeks.

Don’t Miss WinterFest!

On Saturday, February 10th, Park City will be the 10th stop on the Team USA Winterfest tour. While this is not an event for watching the games, but it is a block party to celebrate our local athletes who are currently in South Korea, by mingling with some of our former Olympians. This free event includes a concert by Sleeping With Sirens and Good Charlotte.

Watch:

Super Bowl Sunday pits the Philadelphia Eagles vs. New England Patriots. There are plenty of ways to watch the game, and commercials, near The Colony or on Main Street in Park City.

At Canyons Resort Village, we recommend Drafts Burger Bar.
Collie’s Sports Bar & Grill (738 Main) is a favorite local hangout for games on Main Street.
While they only have one TV, J&G Grill at St. Regis Deer Valley is an exceptional option with plenty of elbow room to take in the game. Get a table early in the day as occupancy is limited.

If you are hosting a Super Bowl Party, make it easy and let Ellie’s Private Chefs, and Catering handle feeding everyone.

Do:

43,000 acres of terrain? Check.
Private snowcat? Check.
35 minutes from Park City? Check.

Park City Powder Cats eliminates lift lines so you can focus on guided powder skiing – they even provide breakfast, lunch and all necessary safety gear. No need to be an expert skier, PC Cat’s terrain is suitable for advanced intermediates on up.

Navigate Sundance Closing Weekend in Park City

January 26, 2018 by Colony PR

Weekend of January 27

The Sundance Film Festival is still in full swing, running through January 28. Park City is abuzz with A-list parties, celeb sightings, film premieres, VIP events and other luxurious functions all weekend long. Remarkably the resorts tend to be on the quiet side during Sundance, and the past week brought several feet of new snow, making for excellent conditions.

Tickets:

Sundance veterans and celebrities opt for the hassle-free Express Pass. Allowing all access screening to every film throughout the closing weekend, this is the “golden ticket” for the festival. You’ll enjoy priority entrance to screenings, including access to the awards ceremony.

Getting There:

The insufficient parking space near Main Street, Old Town Park City, and near festival venues is not worth the hassle. We recommend taking a private car from The Colony. Uber and Lyft both serve the Park City area, as well as numerous transportation companies offering private rides in vans, limos or SUV’s. Once in the Main Street area, it’s an easy walk to and from most venues, plus Sundance provides a convenient shuttle and bus service.

Wine on Main Street:

Local wine in Park City? Well, sort of. Old Town Cellars creates custom blends from renowned wineries in California, Washington, Oregon and other top growing regions. Dubbed “The Official Wine of Après” their Mountain Town Red and Townie Rose are a favorite amongst locals. Look for bottles at many local restaurants, or enjoy a glass or two in their Main Street tasting room.
890 Main Street

Avoiding the Crowds:

If you are looking to avoid the festival atmosphere in Park City during Sundance, it’s easy to find plenty of alternative activities. As we mentioned earlier, the slopes are typically empty, as are snowshoe and cross-country trails at The Colony, as well as in town at White Pine Touring Center. With over two feet of fresh snow, last week conditions are also favorable to venture out on snowmobiles. Several options exist near town, check skiutah.com for a list of tour guides.

Restaurants tend to be crowded or booked up far in advance near Main Street, so instead opt for dining options near Canyons Village or Kimball Junction. If you are up for a 30-minute road trip, Salt Lake City has several Zagat-rated dining options and a burgeoning culinary scene of its own.

A Brief History of The Colony at White Pine Canyon

January 22, 2018 by Colony PR

History is one of the first things to see upon entering The Colony at White Pine Canyon, and relics from the past can be experienced throughout the development. Just past the gatehouse the original home site foundation from the 1900’s, belonging to John George Condas and his family has been preserved. Like many early Park City, Utah settlers, Condas was a hardworking man with an enterprising pioneer spirit who began purchasing and homesteading property for sheep-herding in White Pine Canyon.

Small sheepherders’ shelters are scattered throughout The Colony, left intact where they have stood for many years. Groves of aspen trees are signed with hundred-year-old carvings, documenting travels of previous visitors. Take a short walk on any number of private hiking and horse trails throughout The Colony and artifacts from Park City’s silver mining era can be readily found in numerous places.

The Condas Family legacy lives on today through the master planning of The Colony, where the landscape remains the inspiration, along with the philosophy of less is more. Home sites average over five acres, and over 90% of The Colony’s 4600 acres are designated open space.

The combination of natural beauty, size, privacy, and ski in ski out world-class skiing and snowboarding at Park City Mountain Resort right out your doorstep, The Colony is the new standard for luxury mountain living.

Currently, there are 17 Colony luxury homes listed for sale ranging in price from $3,975,000 to $18,950,000. The average home price in 2017 was over $6.5 million, and seven lots had an average selling price of $2 million.

Currently 22 lots are listed between $1,700,000 and $2,900,000. Lots have closed at an average of 95% of list price.

As of the beginning of June 2017, The Colony had 25 homes under construction. There are 13 homes going through the architectural review process with SARC and 150 completed residences.

Sundance Film Festival 2018 Events #ConnectedColony

January 19, 2018 by Colony PR

The 2018 Sundance Film Festival Event Guide!

Weekend of January 20

The Sundance Film Festival takes over Park City January 18-28, 2017. These ten days are some of the quietest on the mountain, as many visitors are here to work the film circuit and many locals working extra hours to accommodate the influx of festival-goers. Enjoy having the resort to yourself!

Tickets:

As far as experiencing the Festival, we recommend the Sundance Express Pass. Allowing all access screening to all films between Jan 18-23, this is the “golden ticket” for the festival. You’ll enjoy priority entrance to screenings with a photo credential amongst other perks. There is also a second pass for the remaining dates, including the awards ceremony.

Getting There:

Parking near Main Street, Old Town Park City, and near festival venues is extremely limited. We recommend taking a private car from The Colony. Uber and Lyft both serve the Park City area, as well as numerous transportation companies offering options from vans to limos and SUV’s. Luckily, everything is very close in and around the Main Street area, and it’s an easy walk to and from most venues once you are in town. Additionally, Sundance provides a convenient shuttle and bus service, and there are more than enough festival volunteers to point you in the right direction.

Celebrity Sighting:

We hear the best spots to see and be seen are J & G Grill at St. Regis Deer Valley, The Spa at Montage Deer Valley, and, of course, along Main Street. You’re on your own to sleuth out the A-list parties, though. We can’t give away all the secrets, now can we?

Avoiding the Crowds:

It’s easy to find plenty of other things to do in and around Park City during Sundance. As we mentioned earlier, the slopes are typically empty, as are snowshoe and cross-country trails. Restaurants tend to be crowded or booked up far in advance near Main Street, so instead opt for dining options near Canyons Village. The Farm Restaurant is a favorite for farm-to-table dining, as well as Powder Restaurant, located in the Waldorf Astoria.
