They are out for a meet-and-greet each and every Friday at the Ski Beach. Be sure to bring your Epic Pass — the resort photographers will be on-hand to take pictures.

This is a new one – “Hempy Hour” at Provisions by Riverhorse. An Arizona-based company, Simple Jane, will host an event to “explore the benefits of luxury CBD products to improve performance and enhance your recovery on and off the slopes this winter season.” The event will include:

Kurt has created a memorable Christmas experience for 28 years running, thanks to his affable on-stage personality, world-class musicians, and special guests. Kurt plays December 21 through (and on) Chrismas Day. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m.; Sunday through Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Snowshoe or Hike Round Valley
4 – 7 PM @ Quinn’s Junction

Join L.L.Bean for a snowshoe trek at the Round Valley Rail Trail. The activity level is easy to moderate; meet at Quinn’s Junction trailhead. Wear weather-appropriate clothing, insulated waterproof footwear, snowshoes. And don’t forget sunglasses, poles, camera, or binoculars if you’d like to have them!

Park City’s own author and Olympic medalist, Shannon Bahrke Happe, will sign copies of her latest children’s book, “Mommy Why Is Your Hair Pink?” And yes, Shannon is bringing along her medals!

Learn to make homemade pasta! You’ll mix pasta dough by hand, how to use vegetables to flavor and color the dough, and then roll out sheets of dough to turn into ravioli. You’ll also create a ravioli filling with taleggio and mascarpone cheeses, then fill and cut ravioli. YUM!

56th Annual Torchlight Parade
5:30 PM @ Park City Mountain Village Base

One of Park City Mountain’s most special and longest-running traditions! The Annual Christmas Eve Torchlight Parade is a tradition as old as the resort itself. The fun begins at 5:30 p.m., in the Park City Moutain Village Base area. There will be holiday music and complimentary cookies, treats, and hot cocoa.

The parade begins at 6, and that’s when the magic turns up to an 11.
Park City’s ski and snowboard instructors carve down the mountain, lit torches in hand, to lead Santa Claus in a festive procession to town.

Our pick of the week is happening *tonight* – the first-ever, First Friday fireworks at Park City Resort’s Canyons Village.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7

First Friday Fireworks

New this year – on the first Friday of each month (December – March), head over to Canyons Village for live music, family fun, food, and FIREWORKS. Maybe the best thing about this is that you only have to wait until 5 PM to enjoy the fireworks – and then you can head on home to get the little ones to bed.

North Pole Christmas Express Train
Heber Valley Railroad

A fun holiday tradition to enjoy – or to begin! – is a ride to the North Pole. The train ride, which is 90 minutes round-trip, includes hot cocoa and chocolate chip cookies. Families will get to sing along to Christmas songs and enjoy entertainment from the elves and the hosts.

James and the Giant Peach, Jr.

This show is based on the classic, quirky Roald Dahl story “James and the Giant Peach.” This version boasts a terrific score and focuses on courage and self-discovery. Even better – it’s presented by Egyptian Theatre’s Youtheatre, which features actors in 5th grade and up. Grab tickets HERE. Two shows tomorrow, at 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday, you can catch it at 2 p.m.

Park City Film: “The Old Man & The Gun”

This film, reportedly Robert Redford’s very last as an actor, is based on the true story of Forrest Tucker. From the Park City Film website:
“…from his escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 – to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public.

Wrapped up in the pursuit are a detective who becomes captivated with Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and a woman who loves him in spite of his chosen profession. Starring Robert Redford, Sissy Spacek, and Casey Affleck.” Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m.; on Sunday, the film begins at 6 p.m.

Snowshoe Tour

Swaner Nature Preserve & EcoCenter

We are now officially in the Snowshoe Tour portion of our winter season!
Learn about wetland science, natural plant and animal species, and the history of the Swaner Preserve, search for and identify animal tracks and other signs of animal life. Wear sturdy, warm boots, snow pants, hats, gloves, a coat, and bring a water bottle. Snowshoes can be rented from the EcoCenter – $2.50 for members, $5 for non-members.

Morning of Mindfulness Retreat
9 AM – 12 PM @ Blair Education Center
Park City Hospital

Begin your weekend with a 3-hour mindfulness retreat on Saturday morning. It’s taught by Vicki Overfelt and presented by the LiVe Well Center and is perfect for both beginners and advanced students. Cost is just $35.

Snowshoe or Snow Hike with L.L.Bean
4 – 7 PM @ Quinn’s Junction

L.L.Bean Park City is leading a snowshoe (or snow hike) at Round Valley, at an easy to moderate activity level. Participants for this free event are encouraged to dress for the weather and to bring snowshoes if you’d like!

The University of Utah’s Lifelong Learning Program
Holiday Cookings with Alternative Flours
9 AM @ Mindful Cuisine

This is a class put on by the University of Utah’s Lifelong Learning Program, to help you learn the flavors, techniques and proper use of a variety of alternative flours to give traditional holiday cookies a gluten-free twist.

The flours: almond, chestnut, kinako, sorghum, and oat, among others. You’ll make, sample, and take home 5 varieties of cookies, including Bourbon-Chocolate Pecan Pie Bars, Fresh Ginger Cookies, Italian Quince and Orange Filled Chestnut Cookies, Almond Joy, and Pecan Biscotti with Hibiscus Pears.

Make sure you wear comfy clothes and flat shoes – and bring some food to get you through lunch!

Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rides with Santa
Homestead Resort & Soldier Hollow

A unique experience in a horse-drawn sleigh ride — along with a stop at the North Pole to spend some time with Santa! There are a couple of options for a sleigh ride experience (run by Rocky Mountain Outfitters), one at the Homestead Resort and the other at Soldier Hollow.

Homestead Resort:
Hop on this horse-drawn buggy or sleigh ride around one of Utah’s oldest running resorts. Homestead is nestled in Heber Valley, just outside of Midway. From the website:
“Our beautiful teams of Clydesdales, Belgians, and spotted draft horses will pull you through a nice scenic view of Heber Valley as well as breathtaking views of the Wasatch Mountains. We have buggies, wagons, and sleighs to accommodate groups of all sizes.”

Sleigh rides run from 3:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Daytime sleigh rides are also available, and you’re invited to call to inquire: 435-654-1655.

Soldier Hollow:
Bring your family and a bunch of friends anytime through December 22nd. This horse-drawn sleigh ride takes you right to see Santa himself! All Santa sleighs are group rides, and in the event of inclement weather or due to any lack of snow, sleighs will be swapped for horse-drawn wagons. Sleighs can seat up to 12-14 people, and run from 2:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Santa at The Fieldhouse
3:3o – 6 PM @ Basin Rec

This annual event is PACKED with plenty for the kiddoes to do. Bring a toy or some food to donate and get pictures with Santa, face painting, cookie decorating, bounce houses, games, and arts & crafts. Donated items benefit the Christian Center of Park City, entry is $5 per family for those without donations.

The Great Christmas Adventure
Heber City

This is a whole new Christmas activity, put on by a local production company called Popcorn Media. It’s described as a walking and riding theatrical experience. From the website:

Meet Santa and Journey Home on “The Elf Express” Christmas Train
Finally, meet Santa! Tell him what want for Christmas and take as many pictures as you’d like! Then, climb aboard “The Elf Express,” our elf-sized-indoor-train and journey back home.

The entire experience takes about an hour, and the entire experience is actually INSIDE (which means warm coats aren’t necessary).

Trivia at Lucky Ones

Starting December 1, each and every Saturday, you can head over to Lucky Ones Coffee Shop (in the Park City Library) for trivia! The perfect aprés activity for the whole family. Be sure to have at least one smart device is needed for your team (wi-fi provided).

Park City Film: “Belle et Sébastien: L’aventure Continue”

This screening is part of the “Foreign Cinema…For Kids!” Series. From the website:

“Sebastian and his big shaggy dog, Belle, embark on an exciting rescue mission in this beautifully photographed adventure film. World War II has ended, and Sebastian eagerly awaits the return of Angelina, who is like a mother to him. But bad news arrives—the plane Angelina was on has crashed, and there are no known survivors.

Sebastian believes she’s still alive, as does his grandfather, César, who knows that to find her they will need the help of Pierre, an ill-tempered pilot who knows a secret about Sebastian’s past. Park City Event Guide: Deer Valley Opening Day 2018 | 2019

Deer Valley just about open for business (keep an eye on nearly up-to-the-minute conditions via their live webcams!), and this year, for the first time, the resort invites skiers to “carve for a cause.”

Deer Valley Difference
Saturday, December 8 marks Deer Valley’s Opening Day for 2018/2019. If you’re reading this blog, you likely know all about the fabulous snow we’ve already gotten in Park City this year, how Deer Valley is famous for its impeccably-groomed slopes, world-class dining options, award-winning ski school for all levels, and a terrific child-care center. With end-to-end service, from the curbside valet who helps unload your gear when you arrive, to the complimentary mountain host ski tours, to the world-class dining options, to another valet helping you re-load your gear at the end of the day (or store it overnight in the complimentary ski storage), it’s no surprise that it regularly ranks #1 in guest service.

Opening Day
This year, Deer Valley will start its season with (at least) 45 ski runs open and 16 chairlifts running! And one of those lifts is the all-new Homestake Express chairlift, which has been upgraded to a high-speed detachable quad. DV is opening with a pre-season base of more than 40” — so you can bet the skiing is going to be fantastic.

Shred for Red
For the first time ever, Deer Valley Resort invites guests to carve for a cause by participating in “Shred for Red” on Opening Day. Those who participate will spread awareness and raise funds to eradicate blood cancers through The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The event is made up of family-friendly on-mountain activities and challenges.

There is no registration fee, but participants are required to raise (or donate) a minimum of $200. It includes a full-day ski pass, lodging and rental discounts, and access to an aprés-ski reception with food, beverages, and photo opportunities with Olympians.

Top fundraisers (before midnight on Thursday, December 6) will also be invited to St. Regis’ VIP reception on December 7. That’s where the announcement of who gets to “Shred for Red” with an actual Olympian will be announced.

Skiing Deer Valley
Skiers who purchase lift tickets (during non-holiday periods) online at least three days in advance will be able to save a bit of money – and will be able to select tickets which guarantee access to the resort, even if it reaches maximum occupancy. Deer Valley limits the number of lift tickets sold each day, so it recommends guests pre-purchase online to ensure you get on the mountain.

Off-Mountain Fun
It’s more than just skiing at DV. All Seasons Adventures offers guided snowshoe tours in the evenings, with options including a short, family-friendly snowshoe to a campfire to roast marshmallows for s’mores (and the fixings are made by the Deer Valley Bakery– yum!). All Seasons also offers Nordic skiing, dog sledding, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and more.

Twice a month, on Mondays from 10 to 11, Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter hosts Little Naturalist. Little Naturalist is a program for 3 to 5-year-olds who are curious about animals, their habitats, the environment, and exploring nature. The group reads a nature-themed book, does some exploring, and finishes a craft! (Be prepared to adventure outside!)

The Nutcracker

A Brief History & Explanation of Milling and Refining in Park City

The public is invited to attend “Shiny Rock to Silver Bars: A Brief History and Explanation of Milling and Refining in Park City” lecture by mining engineer Donovan Symonds. How were the ores mined in Park City turned into silver, lead or gold bars? Why were they crushed and concentrated?

Practical demonstrations and videos will explain the processes involved in sorting the ores into concentrates and tailings. Donovan, a long-time resident of Park City, is a retired consulting mining engineer. He has enjoyed being a museum docent for about 8 years.

“bias” challenges us to confront our hidden biases and understand what we risk when we follow our gut. Through exposing her own biases, award-winning documentary filmmaker Robin Hauser (CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap, Running for Jim) highlights the nature of implicit bias, the grip it holds on our social and professional lives, and what it will take to induce change.”

A new partnership in wellness between Park City’s The Paint Mixer and local coach and trainer Jess McCurdy, The Art of Movement is a new way to be creative in a space usually reserved for paint and canvas. Join Jess for a focus on mind-body alignment, as she teaches three of her usual classes in a brand-new setting.

Sunrise GRIT 45 (strength conditioning), Vinyasa Yoga, Sweat & Flow (30-minute HIIT & 30-minute yoga), and GRIT 60 (strength conditioning) are offered Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with classes at 6 a.m., 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. (Check the schedule for specifics!) Drop-ins are $20, locals also have the option of a punch pass – which gets you ten classes for $180.

This is a fun Friday after-school activities for kids ages 6 through 10. Participants get to explore art using a variety of fun materials each week. Friday, October 26 is the deadline to apply to have your art included in the Local Artisanal Holiday Market. The Market takes place at the Swaner EcoCenter on December 14, 15, and 16. The Market gives local the artists the chance for exposure – and it gives our community the chance to purchase hyper-local and unique gifts for the holidays.

Utah History Lecture Series

Speaker: Lee Benson

Lee Benson will speak on the topic of David Eccles, owner of Utah Construction Company, which built Hoover Dam. Benson is a published author who writes the weekly “About Utah” column for the Deseret News. His writings cover a range of Utah topics, and this lecture will focus on the Eccles family and fortune, about which he wrote last year.

Benson, a Utah native who lives in Park City, will discuss what he learned as part of the Utah History Lecture Series at 4 p.m. in the Park City Library’s Community Room (3rd floor). The event is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are required (To RSVP, email malena.stevens@parkcity.org.)

Park City’s art scene is one that is surprisingly robust; our galleries house and feature a variety of unique local, national, and international art collections. So – on the last Friday of the month, 19 members of the Park City Gallery Association open their doors for you to enjoy them!

Saturday Morning Guided Walk | Snowshoe Tours
8:30 – 10 AM
Swaner Nature Preserve & EcoCenter

Time for the winter edition of the Nature Walks – where some of the walks turn into snowshoe sessions! Learn about wetland science, natural plant and animal species, and the history of the Swaner Preserve, search for and identify animal tracks and other signs of animal life.

Swaner indicates that the outing is appropriate for all ages and takes place on generally flat terrain with a slight uphill grade – which could be challenging for younger children and some seniors.

Participants should wear sturdy, warm boots, snow pants, hats, gloves, a coat, and bring a water bottle. Snowshoes can be rented from the EcoCenter – $2.50 for members, $5 for non-members.

Fall Dumpster Days
9 AM – 4 PM @ Recycle Utah

Haul your garbage and yard waste to Woodbine Way instead of to the dump. Two large bins will be placed there to collect residential waste only (no hazardous waste, mattresses, refrigerators, tires or business waste will be accepted).

Recycle Utah requests dumpsters be used only during designated drop-off hours. Participants should be prepared to lift their items into the dumpster with minimal assistance – though volunteers will be available to help if needed.

Tour the future home of the Summit County Children’s Justice Center – and meet the team of professionals who serve local victims of child abuse. From the CJC website:

“The Summit County Children’s Justice Center is the first step in the child abuse investigation process and provides a neutral, comfortable environment designed to put a child at ease. A non-leading interview is conducted by a forensic interviewer to get to the truth about what a child may have experienced.

Each interview is video-recorded to be used as the child’s voice during the investigation process. This aids not only in the prosecution of these offenses but also allows the child to tell their story once and move on to the process of healing. Our team is made up of Summit County and Park City Police detectives, caseworkers, prosecutors, victim advocates, and trauma-trained therapists and medical staff.”

Each year, YSA raises vital funds to support more than 2,600 kids participating in the seven YSA-supported competitive winter sports programs and YSA’s after-school programs, Get Out & Play and ACTIV8.

The Art and Science of Arachnids

This exhibit is seriously catching people in its net – and it just so happens to be the largest arachnid exhibit in the United States.

The exhibit guides visitors to explore connections between arachnids and literature, art, folklore, paleontology, science, and history. You’ll see 100 live arachnids (!) and experience hands-on activities – hopefully, the live arachnids are not the hands-on activities, but you’ll have to go see it in order to find out. INSIDER TIP: They feed the spiders on Thursdays – so that is a great time to go see some action.

Kimball Art Center’s current exhibit, Body and Soul, features 24 Utah-based artists and explores the lasting power of what you could call the “legit-art selfie” genre across contemporary painting, photography, text-based installations, and more. From the Kimball Art Center website:

Here’s how it works – you and your little one drop off the favorite (or maybe third-favorite) stuffed animal at the Park City Library. Then – the stuffed friends sleep over – and get into a bit of mischief – at the library, where super-secret cameras capture evidence. When you pick up your friend tomorrow morning, you’ll get to enjoy the pictures of all the adventures they had. Animals should be picked up by noon on Saturday.

Swaner indicates that the outing is appropriate for all ages and takes place on generally flat terrain with a slight uphill grade – which could be challenging for younger children and some seniors.

Participants should wear sturdy, warm boots, snow pants, hats, gloves, a coat, and bring a water bottle. Snowshoes can be rented from the EcoCenter – $2.50 for members, $5 for non-members.

Copper Moose Farm Stand

LAST EVENT ALERT!
Today is the last Saturday you will be able to enjoy all of Copper Moose Farm’s great produce, honey, and flowers — plus some other locally produced goodies! The farm stand is open to the public for one last Saturday before the stand closes for the winter. (It will open occasionally during cold-weather months; you can find more info on the Copper Moose Farm website.)

Copper Moose Farm operates on 3 acres, with a 2,400 sq ft passive solar greenhouse and two hoop houses. The Farm provides organically-grown vegetables and cut flowers for the Park City community.

Oktoberfest

Time is quickly draining for you to attend the annual Oktoberfest at Snowbird! The brew-fest is a family-friendly affair with fun, food, and, of course, practically bottomless brews. If you haven’t gone yet – or you want to hit it up again – Saturday and Sunday will be your last chances.

The annual festival includes a biergarten with more than 50 (yes, FIFTY) varieties of beer. The selections range from German-style brews to locally-crafted suds from Utah breweries (including Moab Brewery, Bohemian, Uinta, and Squatters), and you can save a few bucks on the beers by re-using one of your previously-purchased, 1-liter Snowbird Oktoberfest beer stein or mug (you know you have one. Or ten.).
Not into beer? No problem. A wine garden awaits and you can revisit your college drinking days in the Jagermeister tent.

(Safety note: PLEASE don’t drink and drive. There’s an Oktoberfest lodging special to make it easier for you to be safe and stay the night.)

Of course, with all those drinks, you’re gonna need some food. Grab a brat, or some weisswurst, sauerkraut, apple strudel, spaetzle, beef rouladen, pretzels, and Bavarian roasted almonds. Beer and food are purchased a la carte. The brewskis flow from noon until 6:30 p.m., but get there this weekend because the keg is kicked till next year on Sunday!

Never in history have we (ok, some of us) been more inundated with images – at least from a social media perspective. Landscapes, pictures of home design and architecture, candids (does such a thing even exist anymore?) but especially the new self-portrait – those supernumerary selfies – are shared and consumed relentlessly across social channels.

Backroads Americana by Tom Kelly

Park City’s own renowned landscape photographer Tom Kelly is back with a new gallery show! This one takes a look at rural scenes discovered on back road highways. From the wide-open deserts and plains of the west to the cornfields of America’s heartland, his images show the countryside we usually miss in our travels. You’ll find the Artique Gallery at 283 N. Main St, Kamas. Tom’s exhibit runs through October 31, 2018.

Little Naturalist

Little Naturalist is a program where 3- to 5-year-olds get to learn about animals, their habitats, the environment, and nature. Twice a month, October through May, your little ones will read a nature-themed book, explore the natural world, and complete a craft.

This Monday, the books will be: “From Seed to Pumpkin,” by Wendy Pfeffer & Autumn; along with a pop-up book by David A. Carter. Kiddos will also get to paint their very own pumpkin; other activities in this series can include snowshoeing on the Preserve, playing with live reptiles and amphibians, and upcycling old materials into holiday decorations (sign us up for an adult version of this class, please!).

Cost is just $2.00 per child, with an option to buy a $15.00 punch card good for 10 programs (and it never expires!) One caregiver must accompany children to participate. Please be prepared to be outdoors!

Mindfulness, Elevated

Weekly on Tuesdays

This is an 8-week mindfulness experience at the Park City Hospital’s LiVeWell Center. Participants who have already created a mindfulness practice will elevate their learning about the Four Foundations of Mindfulness:

Mindfulness of Mind

Two weeks will be spent learning practices from each foundation; classes are taught by mindfulness expert Rebecca Brenner. The course repeats each Tuesday evening through December 11, 2018.

Prop 4: Solution or Mistake?
7 – 9 PM @ St. Luke’s Episcopal Church

Gerrymandering is the practice of the political party in power of drawing boundaries for voting districts to favor themselves in future elections.
The Project for Deeper Understanding will examine whether Proposition 4 a wise approach to solving the issue, whether there could be unintended consequences – and if it will really affect how the political system functions. Every citizen is invited to attend the forum, which is free, and will feature an hour of panel discussion will be followed by audience Q&A.
