Park City Event Guide: 4th of July Festivities

Park City has become famous for its epic celebration of Independence Day. The 4th of July parties here stretch into days – not hours – and it all begins THIS Wednesday!

July 3^rd

3rd of July Celebration & Fireworks
5PM@ Park City Mountain Canyons Village
Start the celebrations with caricature artists, hula hoops, chalk art, and face painting! Kick off the holiday with these complimentary, family-friendly activities at Park City Mountain Canyons Village. Here’s a round down of all the events:

4 PM → Bars open – beer, wine, and spirits will be available for purchase, and can be consumed freely throughout the Village and venue. Outside alcohol is not permitted.
5 – 9 PM → Family activities: face painting, caricature artists and chalk art.
5 – 7 PM → DJ Velvet
7:15 – 9:30 PM → The Number Ones
Dusk → Fireworks Display

The Cabriolet lift and Frostwood gondola will be open from 2 – 11PM.

You can also head out of town to spend the day at the Dejoria Center for its Fourth of July Celebration. Here’s what’s happening there:

The Colony at White Pine Canyon is the largest gated ski-in / ski-out community in the United States. Our land spans 4600 acres, and approximately 90% of it will always be preserved as open space.

In winter, enjoy exclusive ski and snowboard access to one of North America’s largest mountain resorts, Park City Mountain. Park City Event Guide: June 14 – 20

People often think of Park City as a winter playground. Having the “greatest snow on earth” will do that to a reputation. But our two world-class resorts don’t just become ghost towns during the summer months! This week, Canyons Village at Park City Mountain Resort opens, with a ton to do for adventurers of any age and sensibility, from serene scenic lift rides to mountain biking trails that will have you gritting your teeth and praying to make it down to the bottom of the mountain in one piece.

Also of note this weekend – the Latino Arts Festival this weekend – an event which gets bigger and bigger every single summer. It’s hosted jointly the Christian Center of Park City and the Park City Summit County Arts Council.

FRIDAY, JUNE 14

Summit Yoga at Montage Deer Valley
9 AM @ Montage Deer Valley Mountain Lawn
Every Friday, an in-house fitness and wellness specialist from the resort will guide an hour-long meditation and yoga session on the lawn, overlooking the Wasatch Mountain Range.

Kids Adventure Games at Park City Mountain Resort
Friday & Saturday

From the Adventure Games website: Designed exclusively for kids ages 6-14, the Kids Adventure Games is a multi-discipline adventure race. Kids, in teams of 2, compete together on bike, in water, and on foot through a challenging 2.5-4-mile adventure course, featuring man-made and natural obstacles like zip lines, massive cargo nets, ropes courses, river tubing, giant slip-and-slides and more!

Skills Clinic → Friday, June 14
1 PM– 5 PM for all ages.
Race Course → Saturday, June 15
Approximately 3.5 miles in length with 10-15 obstacles.

Artful Afternoon
1 – 3:30 PM @ Kimball Art Center
An after-school program to encourage kids to explore art. Kiddos get to try a variety of fun materials and drop-ins are welcome; the 30 dollar fee includes instruction, supervision, and all materials. Lego Club
1—2 PM @ Park City Library
An hour of Lego BLISS. The Park City Library hosts this every week for builders of all ages. Duplos for the younger architects, IKOS for the master builders and lots and lots of LEGOS for everyone in-between.

Village Live Music: Sophia Dion
4 PM – 7 PM @ Park City Mountain Village
Sun’s out, outdoor concerts out (That’s what the kids are saying, right?) From PCMR’s website “Sophia Dion was a budding star before she reached her teen years and she possesses a musical presence that defies her age. Just 17 years old, Sophia is already a true rising star. Uniting indie, soul, blues, and pop influences, Sophia’s singer/songwriter musical style has been influenced by KT Tunstall, Jason Mraz, Ingrid Michaelson, Joss Stone, Sara Bareilles, and Allen Stone.” This concert held on the patio at Legends.

Latino Arts Festival

Food, music, crafts, art, dance and more. The Latino Arts Festival is co-hosted by the Christian Center of Park City and the Park City Summit County Arts Council. Did we mention it’s free?

Traditional music styles from the Andes region in South America. Its chanting melody is carved out of the traditional bamboo flutes which have played a big role in the music, heritage, and landscape of the area.

Solo singer, a variety of music styles, such as ranchera, ballad, etc.
6:15– 6:50 PM → Volta Miuda Capoeira.
Capoeira is a unique and vibrant Afro-Brazilian martial art which cultivates movement, culture, music, and philosophy.
6:50– 7:30 PM → Las Americas.
Traditional folklore dance from different countries of Latin America.
7:30 – 8:30 PM | Mariachi Alma Ranchera de Utah.
Mariachi is a type of musical group originated in Mexico; the groups wear distinctive charro suits and the music is composed using trumpets, violins, and guitars.

Screening + Panel Discussion: “The Quiet Force”
8 PM @ Park City Library
This screening and panel discussion is part of the Latino Arts Festival in conjunction with Park City Film. From the Park City Film website “The Quiet Force, investigates the human and economic impact of Latinx immigrants living in Western ski towns – where they comprise 30 percent (or more) of the local population.” The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Diego Zegarra, Social Equity Director of the Park City Community Foundation; John Mejia, Legal Director, ACLU-Utah; Edwardo Estrada, local business owner, and Ivonne Timar, manager of Flanagan’s on Main and parent of PCSD students. Rob Harter, Executive Director, Christian Center of Park City, will moderate.

An Evening with Leo Kottke

Parents’ Survival Night
6 – 9 PM @ The Little Gym Park City
A break from the kids *and* a break from the parents – it’s a survival night for all of us. Parents can use the time to enjoy a movie or a quiet meal out while the kids get quality “kid time” in a safe, fun, place with trained instructors who lead them through music, games, and fun. Start your weekend off on the right foot! Join a group of weekend-walkers and learn about the Swaner Preserve wetlands while you get some exercise – and look for an abundance of wildlife!

Historic Home Tour
10 AM – 3 PM @ Historic Old Town
Utah has some incredible historic homes and every time I drive by, I just think “I just want to take a peek inside, just really quick!” Well here’s your chance to see some historic miners’ cottages in the Park City Museum’s annual showcase of some of the most beautiful homes on Woodside and Park Avenues. Eat Your Heart Out
All day @ Boneyard, Wine Dive, No Name, & Butcher’s Chop House
Eat at any of the four participating restaurants on Saturday and 10% of your order will go to People’s Health Clinic. People’s Health Clinic is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing no-cost quality care to the uninsured residents of Summit and Wasatch Counties.

Wasatch Back Student Art Show

In this exhibit through July 7^th, see art from k-12 students from Summit and Wasatch counties. They were invited to create art around the theme “storytelling”. More than 500 artists participate in this annual exhibit.

John Hess: Permutations
Noon @ Kimball Art Center
From the Kimballl Art Center “John Hess is a mixed media textile artist with an interest in exploring dimension, either with double woven cloth shaped into relief with an armature for stability or flat woven fabric using pattern and fabric paint to create illusions of depth. Using patterns, either woven or painted, he expresses color modulations while repeating with scale changes and mirrored effects.” The exhibit is open through July 16^th.

Art Pianos for All Pop-up Concert
1 PM @ Coalville City Hall
Artists from both the Utah Symphony and the Utah Opera Resident Artist program will perform at the Art Pianos for All public art installations.

Village Live Music: BD Howes
3 PM – 6 PM @ Park City Mountain Village
From PCMR’s website “Howes’ tunes are an acoustic classic Rock’ sound of originals and a nice dusting of cover tunes. B.D. Howes is a musician with a history in the Intermountain and east coast music scene. Howes has graced stages along the Wasatch front for years, played at several festivals, winter and summer concerts around Utah. His beautiful melodies gliding arrangements and drift away vocals provide easy unobtrusive listening.” The concert will take place on the PayDay Pad in the Park City Mountain Village.

Plein Air Paint Out

While my favorite type of “al fresco” is “dining,” more than 40 landscape artists will demonstrate painting en plein air at the Park City Nursery’s beautiful gardens. Paintings are available for purchase. Plus, there will be light appetizers. For more info, go HERE gallerymar.com

From PCMR’s website “Kate Vogel is a local singer-songwriter. A free screening of the biographical musical drama about the life and career of Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, a recording artist well known in the Latino communities in the United States and Mexico. Screening (and popcorn!) are free.

Stop by and pick up fresh fruit for a mid-hike snack, a bundle of organic vegetables for your family dinner, or locally made jams, jellies, trinkets, or jewelry to take home as a souvenir each Wednesday from 12:00 – 5:00 PM. Not only does buying local food help our community, it also helps our environment by reducing carbon dioxide emissions and packing materials, as well as helping to make farming more profitable.

Music on the Patio: Voices in the Hills

Voices in the Hills will feature a wide array of talented singer songwriters from throughout the state of Utah and from as far away as Nashville. Bus Rider Appreciation Day
7 – 10 AM @ Canyons Village
Free donuts, coffee, and swag at Canyons Village to celebrate our FREE transit system to “Get on Board” for Bus Rider Appreciation Day at Canyons Village of Park City Mountain.

Free Dental Health Check-Ups for Kids
8 AM – 4 PM @ People’s Health Clinic
Free dental checkups will be available all day long at the People’s Health Clinic in Park City. Children get a dental check-up, education on dental health, and a free goodie bag. The day is open to all uninsured children (17 years and younger) in Summit and Wasatch Counties. No walk-ins – must call for an appointment: 435-333-1871.

Snowshoe Tour of the Preserve
8:30 – 10 AM @ Swaner Nature Preserve
Learn about wetland science, natural plant and animal species, and the history of the Swaner Preserve; search for and identify animal tracks and other signs of animal life. Be sure to wear sturdy, warm boots, snow pants, hats, gloves, a coat, and bring a water bottle. Snowshoes can be rented from the EcoCenter – $2.50 for members, $5 for non-members.

If you’ve never heard of it, the week was created in 2003 by a high school student in an effort to show off the night sky without the impacts of light pollution. A few things *you* can do to mitigate light pollution, courtesy of International Dark-Sky Association:

Use energy-efficient bulbs – and only as bright as you need
Shield outdoor lights; direct them down.

Twice a month, on Mondays from 10 to 11, Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter hosts Little Naturalist. Little Naturalist is a program for 3 to 5-year-olds who are curious about animals, their habitats, the environment, and exploring nature. The group reads a nature-themed book, does some exploring, and finishes a craft! (Be prepared to adventure outside!)

A Brief History & Explanation of Milling and Refining in Park City

The public is invited to attend “Shiny Rock to Silver Bars: A Brief History and Explanation of Milling and Refining in Park City” lecture by mining engineer Donovan Symonds. How were the ores mined in Park City turned into silver, lead or gold bars? Why were they crushed and concentrated?

Practical demonstrations and videos will explain the processes involved in sorting the ores into concentrates and tailings. Donovan, a long-time resident of Park City, is a retired consulting mining engineer. He has enjoyed being a museum docent for about 8 years.

High Meadow Park: Brand-New Dedicated Ski & Snowboard Learning Area
Park City Mountain has always been the place to go to enjoy a comfortable learning environment for beginners of any age.

That remains the same, but this year, there is going to be a whole new area in which to learn and where beginners, kids, and families will experience a whole new level of comfort.

The brand-new High Meadow Park is an entire dedicated area for learning, with gentle terrain and new snowmaking, which will create terrific surfaces for new skiers and snowboarders. The brand-new Candy Cabin offers a place to take a rest and grab a snack, and getting there easy, too – there’s a new, detachable high-speed four-passenger lift.

Mid-Mountain Lodge: A New Take On The Classic
This classic spot, the Mid-Mountain Lodge, is beloved by just about everyone who has ever clomped in its door.

The building is more than 120 years old and originally functioned as a miners’ boarding house. The renovation pays tribute to our community’s rich mining heritage and offers a cozy spot to warm up and fill up.

Additional indoor seating is welcome news to those among us who have waited, snow dripping off our boots, to enjoy the food and a beverage. There’s also an upgraded dining area, newly “crafted chef-driven menus,” and a full-service bar.

Cloud Dine: Now With More Seating To Take In The Views

More than 200 seats have been added to this modern bistro, which sits right on top of a Wasatch Range ridgeline, so guests here get to sit back and take in the unbelievable views. This restaurant is known for “foodie-

approved” cuisine and its spectacular presentation, and now, there’s even more room to enjoy all of it.

Expanded Snowmaking & Grooming
Most of the mountain will be open to exploration even earlier thanks to new snowmaking capabilities on Red Pine Road, a major connector trail off of Tombstone Express. More snow means the trail will open earlier in the season and provide access to even more terrain across the mountain.

AT THE COLONY

More than 50% of the Park City Mountain’s Canyons Village terrain can be found within the boundaries here at The Colony. Even better, the high-speed Quicksilver Gondola, which zips riders from one side of the enormous resort to the other in mere moments, is also inside The Colony. The Gondola is directly accessible for Colony homeowners in possession of a lift ticket – which means that the entirety of the Park City Mountain land is right outside the door – and at their ski tips.

This unmatched access means skiers and snowboarders enjoy everything from first tracks on a powder day to perfect corduroy groomers (more than 120 trails are groomed each night) throughout the season. Stuffed Animal Sleepover

Trust us, if your little ones can bear to be away from their favorite friend for the night – they will LOVE. IT.

Here’s how it works – you and your little one drop off the favorite (or maybe third-favorite) stuffed animal at the Park City Library. Then – the stuffed friends sleep over – and get into a bit of mischief – at the library, where super-secret cameras capture evidence. When you pick up your friend tomorrow morning, you’ll get to enjoy the pictures of all the adventures they had. Animals should be picked up by noon on Saturday.

Swaner Nature Preserve & EcoCenter

Time for the winter edition of the Nature Walks – where some of the walks turn into snowshoe sessions! Learn about wetland science, natural plant and animal species, and the history of the Swaner Preserve, search for and identify animal tracks and other signs of animal life.

Swaner indicates that the outing is appropriate for all ages and takes place on generally flat terrain with a slight uphill grade – which could be challenging for younger children and some seniors.

Participants should wear sturdy, warm boots, snow pants, hats, gloves, a coat, and bring a water bottle. Snowshoes can be rented from the EcoCenter – $2.50 for members, $5 for non-members.

Copper Moose Farm Stand

LAST EVENT ALERT!
Today is the last Saturday you will be able to enjoy all of Copper Moose Farm’s great produce, honey, and flowers — plus some other locally produced goodies! The farm stand is open to the public for one last Saturday before the stand closes for the winter. (It will open occasionally during cold-weather months; you can find more info on the Copper Moose Farm website.)

Copper Moose Farm operates on 3 acres, with a 2,400 sq ft passive solar greenhouse and two hoop houses. The Farm provides organically-grown vegetables and cut flowers for the Park City community.

Oktoberfest
Snowbird

Time is quickly draining for you to attend the annual Oktoberfest at Snowbird! The brew-fest is a family-friendly affair with fun, food, and, of course, practically bottomless brews. If you haven’t gone yet – or you want to hit it up again – Saturday and Sunday will be your last chances.

The annual festival includes a biergarten with more than 50 (yes, FIFTY) varieties of beer. The selections range from German-style brews to locally-crafted suds from Utah breweries (including Moab Brewery, Bohemian, Uinta, and Squatters), and you can save a few bucks on the beers by re-using one of your previously-purchased, 1-liter Snowbird Oktoberfest beer stein or mug (you know you have one. Or ten.).
Not into beer? No problem. A wine garden awaits and you can revisit your college drinking days in the Jagermeister tent.

(Safety note: PLEASE don’t drink and drive. There’s an Oktoberfest lodging special to make it easier for you to be safe and stay the night.)

Of course, with all those drinks, you’re gonna need some food. Grab a brat, or some weisswurst, sauerkraut, apple strudel, spaetzle, beef rouladen, pretzels, and Bavarian roasted almonds. Beer and food are purchased a la carte. The brewskis flow from noon until 6:30 p.m., but get there this weekend because the keg is kicked till next year on Sunday!

The Art and Science of Arachnids
Swaner Preserve & EcoCenter

This exhibit is seriously catching people in its net – and it just so happens to be the largest arachnid exhibit in the United States.

The exhibit guides visitors to explore connections between arachnids and literature, art, folklore, paleontology, science, and history. You’ll see 100 live arachnids (!) and experience hands-on activities – hopefully, the live arachnids are not the hands-on activities, but you’ll have to go see it in order to find out. INSIDER TIP: They feed the spiders on Thursdays – so that is a great time to go see some action.

Never in history have we (ok, some of us) been more inundated with images – at least from a social media perspective. Landscapes, pictures of home design and architecture, candids (does such a thing even exist anymore?) but especially the new self-portrait – those supernumerary selfies – are shared and consumed relentlessly across social channels.

Kimball Art Center’s new exhibit, Body and Soul, features 24 Utah-based artists and explores the lasting power of what you could call the “legit-art selfie” genre across contemporary painting, photography, text-based installations, and more. From the Kimball Art Center website:

“Established tropes are both embraced and reinvented, presenting diverse approaches to portraiture as a means of commemoration, reflection, and social critique. From faithful likeness to fantasy and fracture, the power of portraits is that they are about more than what we look like; they reveal who we are.” Admission is free; the exhibit will run through November 4.

Backroads Americana by Tom Kelly

Park City’s own renowned landscape photographer Tom Kelly is back with a new gallery show! This one takes a look at rural scenes discovered on back road highways. From the wide-open deserts and plains of the west to the cornfields of America’s heartland, his images show the countryside we usually miss in our travels. You’ll find the Artique Gallery at 283 N. Main St, Kamas. Tom’s exhibit runs through October 31, 2018.

Little Naturalist
10 – 11 AM @ Swaner EcoCenter

Little Naturalist is a program where 3- to 5-year-olds get to learn about animals, their habitats, the environment, and nature. Twice a month, October through May, your little ones will read a nature-themed book, explore the natural world, and complete a craft.

This Monday, the books will be: “From Seed to Pumpkin,” by Wendy Pfeffer & Autumn; along with a pop-up book by David A. Carter. Kiddos will also get to paint their very own pumpkin; other activities in this series can include snowshoeing on the Preserve, playing with live reptiles and amphibians, and upcycling old materials into holiday decorations (sign us up for an adult version of this class, please!).

Cost is just $2.00 per child, with an option to buy a $15.00 punch card good for 10 programs (and it never expires!) One caregiver must accompany children to participate. Please be prepared to be outdoors!

Strong Parents, Stable Children

It’s no surprise that parents and children operate at their best when they are surrounded by caring people working to ensure they reach their full potential in a supportive way. Participants in this workshop will learn new strategies to help families build protective factors and enable children to thrive. This is a free event.

Mindfulness, Elevated
6 – 8 PM @ LiVeWell Center
Weekly on Tuesdays

This is an 8-week mindfulness experience at the Park City Hospital’s LiVeWell Center. Participants who have already created a mindfulness practice will elevate their learning about the Four Foundations of Mindfulness:

Mindfulness of Body
Mindfulness of Life
Mindfulness of Effort
Mindfulness of Mind

Two weeks will be spent learning practices from each foundation; classes are taught by mindfulness expert Rebecca Brenner. The course repeats each Tuesday evening through December 11, 2018.

Prop 4: Solution or Mistake?
7 – 9 PM @ St. Luke’s Episcopal Church

Gerrymandering is the practice of the political party in power of drawing boundaries for voting districts to favor themselves in future elections.
The Project for Deeper Understanding will examine whether Proposition 4 a wise approach to solving the issue, whether there could be unintended consequences – and if it will really affect how the political system functions. Every citizen is invited to attend the forum, which is free, and will feature an hour of panel discussion will be followed by audience Q&A.
