Park City Event Guide: August 16 – 22

The Tour of Utah is one of the most prestigious cycling events in North America – and it runs right through our community each and every summer!

The Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah is an epic seven-day, professional cycling race along some of the most scenic highways and byways of Utah.

Saturday’s Stage 5 Event starts at 2:30 p.m. and finishes at 5:45 p.m. at Canyons Village at Park City Mountain, while Sunday’s Stage 6 Event starts at 12:30 p.m. and finishes at 3:45 p.m. on 250 Main St.

Activities, like an expo and kids’ races, round out the celebration before, after, and during the event. If you haven’t experienced the thrill of watching – and feeling! – the cyclists zoom past in one giant mass, do not miss out; it is absolutely worth standing along the sidelines and cheering!

Summit Yoga at Montage Deer Valley

Every Friday, an in-house fitness and wellness specialist from the resort will guide an hour-long meditation and yoga session on the lawn, overlooking the Wasatch Mountain Range.

Artful Afternoon

An after-school program to encourage kids to explore art. Kiddos get to try a variety of fun materials and drop-ins are welcome; the 30 dollar fee includes instruction, supervision, and all materials. An hour of Lego BLISS. The Park City Library hosts this every week for builders of all ages. Duplos for the younger architects, IKOS for the master builders and lots and lots of LEGOS for everyone in-between.

I have loved the “Standards” for as long as I can remember and I also had every Elton John and Carole King album in the 70”s. I currently reside with my family in Park City, Utah I began playing piano and singing at a very young age and continued for years until I took a break to become an internationally ranked Mountain Bike racer. I then retired from racing in 2003 and came back to music.” This concert held on the patio at Legends.

Parents’ Survival Night

A break from the kids *and* a break from the parents – it’s a survival night for all of us. Parents can use the time to enjoy a movie or a quiet meal out while the kids get quality “kid time” in a safe, fun place with trained instructors who lead them through music, games, and fun. In Barefoot in the Park, newlyweds Corie and Paul Bratter have completed their six-day honeymoon and are moving into their first apartment. Corie is romantic, impulsive, and enthusiastic, while her husband is a proper, careful, even “stuffy” young attorney who is more concerned with his budding legal career than he is with helping to build their love nest and perpetuating the honeymoon atmosphere. Soon Corie and Paul quarrel, Paul questioning Corie’s judgment and Corie questioning Paul’s sense of romance and adventure.

Village Live Music: Dr. Bob

Sun’s out, outdoor concerts out (That’s what the kids are saying, right?) From PCMR’s website “Dr. Bob has been a staple in the Park City music scene. Led by singer and songwriter Jeffery Howrey, the band has entertained its fans with original blues-based hard rock for 35 years. Dr. Bob has played hundreds of gigs throughout the West, including multiple appearances at the Utah Arts Festival and the Park City Arts Festival. Dr. Bob has opened concerts for such national acts as the Ramones, Huey Lewis and the News. Dr. Bob has released seven CDs of original music, including the recent album “Back from the Grave.” Concert will take place on the PayDay Pad in the Park City Mountain Village.

Every Thursday and Saturday night, the resort will host a free, outdoor concert. This week, The Honey Hounds are the featured performer. With Nicholas Izzard on guitar and vocals, Tyler Watts on drums, and Nathan Ranew on bass, the Honey Hounds are re-energizing western music, embodying the rock n roll lifestyle while embracing the roots of soul and funk. Experience this challenging obstacle course under a full moon, complete with adaptive elements featuring a high bridge wide enough for a wheelchair, a zip line without an abrupt stop (and more), so that individuals of all abilities can move past fears or barriers while building trust with members of their team or family.

From PCMR’s website “Steve is a self-taught musician who has been playing since the age of 4. He’s been a professional musician for more than 35 years and plays the guitar, mandolin, piano, steel guitar, bass, drums and sings. In the past year, Steve has published a children’s book called “Patch the Polar Bear” and released an acoustic instrumental CD and a new blues rock CD called “Resonate.” Today, Steve continues to write and record new material.” Concert will take place on the Legends patio at Park City Mountain Village.

Ben Musser’s indie-acoustic soul and roots project was formed, in his words, “to expand the boundaries of acoustic music and serve as a vehicle for my distilling artistry.” Musser is a multi-instrumentalist; a drummer, guitarist, singer, songwriter and schooled in jazz, rock, classical guitar and voice.”

Utah Olympic Park is open for the summer season. You can learn about the park’s beginnings in the free museum or take a ride on the summer bobsled. The park’s summer experiences include the extreme zip line, zip line tour, alpine slide, drop tower, adventure courses and scenic chairlift rides (not all activities are open early season). Pam Bowman and Jacqui Larsen Exhibit: “Things My Mother Taught Me”

Spend an hour walking down Historic Main Street, learning about the city’s growth from a mining town to a ski destination. The tours take place every weekday until August 30th. Patios, Pools & the Invention of the American Backyard
Through November 20 @ Park City Museum
This exhibit, part of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, shows the history of the American backyard—from pools, to lawns, to BBQ grills. From the Park City Museum “Through rare photographs, historic drawings and period advertisements, Patios, Pools, & the Invention of the American Backyard explores the mid-century backyard of the 1950s from the rise of the suburbs and tract houses and the beauty of postwar garden design to the birth of the environmental movement.”

DIG In

EATS and Summit Community Gardens created DIG In to bring people together around food. This community-focused event sells out to 400 guests every year! Held at Summit Community Gardens on August 25, 2019, this is one of the most beautiful outdoor events in town. Early bird tickets go on sale June 28th. Family-friendly fun for all ages!

Register Now for the National Ability Center’s Summit Challenge next Saturday, August 24, 2019. This scenic biking tour and fundraiser winds through the mountains and valleys of Summit and Wasatch counties, with multiple distance courses to choose from ranging from 16 to 100 miles, cyclists of all abilities can help raise funds for the National Ability Center’s programs and activities. Enjoy poultry and livestock exhibits, country cooking, pageantry and carnival fun at the last weekend of the Summit Country Fair. Friday highlights include a pie baking contest, dance competitions, live music, rodeo, and teen dance; while Saturday offers an early-bird breakfast, family bike-run-walk event, parade, live music and rodeo.

Canyons Village Summer Concert Series: Ryan Montbleau Band
6 PM @ Canyons Village at Park City Mountain Resort
Every Thursday and Saturday night, the resort will host a free, outdoor concert. This week, Ryan Montbleau is the featured performer. Montbleau has been pouring his heart out in song since the early 2000’s, when he first began performing around his native Massachusetts. He’d go on to collaborate with Martin Sexton, Trombone Shorty, and Galactic among others, and share bills and stages with artists as diverse as Tedeschi Trucks Band, Ani DiFranco, The Wood Brothers, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and Mavis Staples, but it was Montbleau’s ecstatic headline shows—often more than 200 of them a year—that solidified his reputation as a live powerhouse and an inexorable road warrior. NPR’s Mountain Stage compared his “eloquent, soulful songwriting” to Bill Withers and James Taylor, while Relix hailed his “poetic Americana,” and The Boston Herald raved that “he’s made a career of confident, danceable positivity.”

Did you know, yard and food waste makes up about 30% of the material sent to the landfill each year? Composting uses a small amount of water and oxygen to decompose this waste, turning it into a nutrient-rich fertilizer. This lunchtime workshop will provide information on what materials can be composted and the supplies needed to maintain it, as well as tips to keep compost piles fresh and active.

Soon Corie and Paul quarrel, Paul questioning Corie’s judgment and Corie questioning Paul’s sense of romance and adventure.

Paint Night
6:30 PM @ DeJoria Center
Painter or not, this class is for you! Come and enjoy a hands-on workshop where you’ll create a rustic welcome sign with step-by-step instruction. Come early to enjoy dinner before getting started, or head to the Paint Night room and order right in the Willow Room. Secure your seats 15-20 minutes prior to start time, especially if you’re with a large group. Food and drink are available for purchase through the State Road Restaurant and are not included in the ticket price. The garage doors will be open for you to enjoy the Powell Brothers’ performance out on the lawn!

Utah Olympic Park is open for the summer season. You can learn about the park’s beginnings in the free museum or take a ride on the summer bobsled. The park’s summer experiences include the extreme zip line, zip line tour, alpine slide, drop tower, adventure courses and scenic chairlift rides (not all activities are open early season). Pam Bowman and Jacqui Larsen Exhibit: “Things My Mother Taught Me”

Featuring installation works by Bowman and mixed-media paintings by Larsen at the Kimball Art Center. From the KAC “In Pam Bowman’s installation, six story fragments from her life resonate universally as she addresses the formative issues of character development, individual purpose, and body image, as taught by her mother. Jacqui Larsen’s paintings take a metaphoric look at the impossible charge of any guardian to stand as lookout for a child.”

Walking Tours of Historic Main Street

Spend an hour walking down Historic Main Street, learning about the city’s growth from a mining town to a ski destination. The tours take place every weekday until August 30th. Patios, Pools & the Invention of the American Backyard

This exhibit, part of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, shows the history of the American backyard—from pools, to lawns, to BBQ grills. From the Park City Museum “Through rare photographs, historic drawings and period advertisements, Patios, Pools, & the Invention of the American Backyard explores the mid-century backyard of the 1950s from the rise of the suburbs and tract houses and the beauty of postwar garden design to the birth of the environmental movement.”

Bring your favorite movie treats, cozy pillows, and blankets, and set up camp in City Park for this heartwarming documentary about Owen Suskind, an autistic boy who finds a voice through Disney movies. This was one of my favorite movies at Sundance a few years ago. It is a very honest portrayal of autism that inspires without exploiting. The screening is free.  Come at 7:30 for an array of delicious desserts for purchase from Last Course Dessert Studio. In the event of inclement weather, the film will be moved to The Ray Theatre.

Canyons Village Summer Concert Series: Blitzen Trapper

Over the course of 15 years and seven full-length albums, Blitzen Trapper has crafted one of the more compelling and varied catalogs in contemporary rock and roll. Indeed, singer and guitarist Eric Earley, who is also the Portland, Oregon-based band’s primary songwriter, is possessed of a musical and lyrical sensibility that is remarkably deep and wide; big ideas and universal emotions are wrung from the seemingly plainspoken details of small-screen and often highly personal stories, and set to music that reaches way, way back to old-timey folk and bluegrass, travels through everything from country, psychedelia and soul to prog, garage and metal, indulges gloriously in the classic rock of the 70s and 80s, and makes occasional side trips into hip-hop, skewed pop, and noisy freakouts.

Climbing Wall

Climb through the EcoSystem from the bedrock all the way to the uplands! The Swaner indoor climbing wall is fun for all ages. A harness is supplied, participants are asked to wear closed-toe shoes.

Beethoven Festival Sunday Salon Concert

Arrive at 4:30 for some wine, cheese, fruit, and sweets. The concert will begin at 5, when you will enjoy a comfortably intimate program of chamber works by Beethoven, presented by the Festival Artists in Residence Russell Harlow, clarinetist, Leslie Harlow, violist and pianist Pamela Palmer Jones.

Canyons Village Summer Concert Series: Neal Francis

Every Thursday and Saturday night, the resort will host a free, outdoor concert. This week, Neal Francis is the featured performer. From the PCMR website “Born Neal Francis O’Hara, the piano prodigy found himself touring Europe by the age of 18 with Muddy Waters’ son and backing up other prominent blues artists coast-to-coast. In 2012, Francis joined popular instrumental funk band The Heard. With Francis at the creative helm, The Heard transformed into a national act, touring with boogaloo progenitors The New Mastersounds and chart-toppers The Revivalists and appearing at Jazz Fest and Bear Creek. As a solo artist, Neal Francis has been called the “reincarnation of Allen Toussaint” with his gleeful 70s style funk and soul.”

Check out this FREE Summer Concert Series out on The Great Lawn! The Hardy Brothers originally grew up in Utah and are currently based there, but have also lived in Hawaii, Africa, Spain, Brazil and throughout the continental U.S. Their travels have exposed them to many different music styles which they incorporate into their sound.

Utah Olympic Park is open for the summer season. You can learn about the park’s beginnings in the free museum or take a ride on the summer bobsled. The park’s summer experiences include the extreme zip line, zip line tour, alpine slide, drop tower, adventure courses and scenic chairlift rides (not all activities are open early season). Pam Bowman and Jacqui Larsen Exhibit: “Things My Mother Taught Me”
Through Sept. 8 @ Kimball Art Center
Featuring installation works by Bowman and mixed-media paintings by Larsen at the Kimball Art Center. From the KAC “In Pam Bowman’s installation, six-story fragments from her life resonate universally as she addresses the formative issues of character development, individual purpose, and body image, as taught by her mother. Jacqui Larsen’s paintings take a metaphoric look at the impossible charge of any guardian to stand as a lookout for a child.”

Walking Tours of Historic Main Street

Spend an hour walking down Historic Main Street, learning about the city’s growth from a mining town to a ski destination. The tours take place every weekday until August 30th. Patios, Pools & the Invention of the American Backyard
Through November 20 @ Park City Museum
This exhibit, part of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, shows the history of the American backyard—from pools to lawns, to BBQ grills. From the Park City Museum “Through rare photographs, historic drawings and period advertisements, Patios, Pools, & the Invention of the American Backyard explores the mid-century backyard of the 1950s from the rise of the suburbs and tract houses and the beauty of postwar garden design to the birth of the environmental movement.”

Coming up this week, our state celebrates a uniquely Utah holiday. Pioneer Day celebrates the day when Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake valley in 1847 and declared “This is the place!”

Screening: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind

A few of us got the chance to see this at Sundance and it is an incredible story! It’s amazing what can be accomplished with access to education. From the Sundance Institute, “After young William Kamkwamba is forced to drop out of school because he can’t afford the fees, he continues to fight for his community’s survival by sneaking into the school library to research plans for a windmill-powered pump to irrigate land in his drought-ridden village in Malawi.” This is based on a true story, and the book it is based upon is also the One Book, One Community choice from the Park City Education Foundation. There will be a community discussion with the author this fall.

Summit Land Conservancy Hops Hunters Hike

Once again, the Summit Land Conservancy is teaming up with Wasatch Brewing to hunt for local hops in the Park City area! The group hopes to have enough hops by fall to brew a limited-edition beverage through Wasatch brewery—with a portion of the proceeds going to the Summit Land Conservancy.

One of my favorite parts of summer is farmer’s markets. And this weekend, Park Silly kicks off. Every Sunday, local and regional arts and crafts, music and performance art, antiques, imports and one-of-a-kind finds, delicious gourmet foods, and farmer’s market fruits and vegetables all converge on Park City’s Historic Main Street. Lift-served mountain biking is available on Silver Lake Express, Homestake Express and Sterling Express chairlifts. And if you reserve in advance, you can get some mountain bike lessons as well.

Candidates Forum for the Park City Municipal Primary Elections

Being an informed voter is one of the most important things you can do. And as exciting as national politics can be, the closer an election is to you, the bigger the impact will be on your life. So take the chance to meet the candidates at this event hosted by the League of Women Voter. Hear directly from the seven candidates running in the Primary Election for seats on the Park City Council. Come meet the candidates from 6:00 to 6:30pm. The candidates will introduce themselves and answer questions from 6:30 to 8:00pm in a moderated forum.

International Summer Film Series: The March of the Penguins

Every Tuesday, Park City Film and the library are offering a free film (and popcorn!) as part of the School Break Film Series. This week, come see the The March of the Penguins. At the end of each Antarctic summer, the emperor penguins of the South Pole journey to their traditional breeding grounds in a fascinating mating ritual that is captured in this documentary by intrepid filmmaker Luc Jacquet. The journey across frozen tundra proves to be the simplest part of the ritual, as after the egg is hatched, the female must delicately transfer it to the male and make her way back to the distant sea to nourish herself and bring back food to her newborn chick.

Canyons Village Summer Concert Series: Stephen Kellogg

Every Thursday and Saturday night, the resort will host a free, outdoor concert. This week, Stephen Kellogg is the featured performer. From the PCMR website “Over the last decade, New England native Stephen Kellogg has performed more than 1500 concerts around the world, raised thousands of dollars for causes close to his heart, been named Armed Forces Entertainer of the Year, and penned singles for art-ists like platinum selling rock band O.A.R and American Idol winner Nick Fradiani. Utah Olympic Park is open for the summer season. You can learn about the park’s beginnings in the free museum or take a ride on the summer bobsled. The park’s summer experiences include the extreme zip line, zip line tour, alpine slide, drop tower, adventure courses and scenic chairlift rides (not all activities are open early season). Walking Tours of Historic Main Street

Spend an hour walking down Historic Main Street, learning about the city’s growth from a mining town to a ski destination. The tours take place every weekday until August 30th. Patios, Pools & the Invention of the American Backyard

This exhibit, part of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, shows the history of the American backyard—from pools, to lawns, to BBQ grills. From the Park City Museum “Through rare photographs, historic drawings and period advertisements, Patios, Pools, & the Invention of the American Backyard explores the mid-century backyard of the 1950s from the rise of the suburbs and tract houses and the beauty of postwar garden design to the birth of the environmental movement.”

I currently reside with my family in Park City, Utah I began playing piano and singing at a very young age and continued for years until I took a break to become an internationally ranked Mountain Bike racer. Jupiter Peak Steeplechase

Challenge yourself (or come cheer on the racers) for the second stage of the “Triple Trail Series.” This Park City favorite draws elite athletes as well as weekend warriors to test the limits of a course with an elevation profile that resembles an inverted “V” (for vertical!). A 16-mile loop from Park City Mountain Resort (7,000 feet above sea level) to the top of 10,000-foot Jupiter Peak and back down.  

Saturday Morning Nature Walk

Screening: The Footballest

This Spanish film, shown with English subtitles, tells the story of Francisco and his closest friends—who play on a soccer team that has reached its lowest point. They’ve got to win one of the next three games to keep the school from cutting their team altogether and replacing it with a choir! A series of strange events take place in the first two games. Coincidence? Conspiracy? This is an adaptation of the popular Spanish children’s-book series “Los Futbolisimos” by Roberto Santiago.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Film in concert with the Utah Symphony

Bring your lunch to this free class to learn the basics about composting from Recycle Utah. You’ll learn what materials can be composted and the supplies needed to maintain it, as well as tips to keep compost piles fresh and active. All attendees will also get 10% off composting bins from Recycle Utah.

Author Meredith Jordan will be talking about her experience writing this book about what goes on behind the scenes of a major motion picture. She spent 5 months on the set of “Last Vegas” with stars like Robert de Niro and Morgan Freeman. But the book focuses more on the people behind the camera, the director and a huge cast of artists and artisans, designers and creators, overseers, office and logistical support. The book follows the real people behind the scenes as they make the movie, stopping along the way to explain process with a little help from history.

John Hess: Permutations @ Kimball Art Center
From the Kimball Art Center “John Hess is a mixed media textile artist with an interest in exploring dimension, either with double woven cloth shaped into relief with an armature for stability or flat woven fabric using pattern and fabric paint to create illusions of depth. Using patterns, either woven or painted, he expresses color modulations while repeating with scale changes and mirrored effects.” The exhibit is open through July 16th.
