Park City Event Guide: May 16 – 23

May 16, 2019 by Shelby Hintze, Colony PR

This weekend, we celebrate a decade of Running with Ed[ucation]! This annual spring race is a MASSIVE fundraiser for the Park City Education Foundation, which funds student and teacher programs in the Park City School District.

Over the last 10 years, the event has raised more than three million dollars! What started as a few hundred runners and a handful of volunteers has now grown to more than 1,500 runners and hundreds of volunteers. All of that money has been funneled right into more than 100 programs – which impact every single student in our school district.

So this Saturday, while you’re out and about, make sure to shout out and cheer on whichever teams you come across – bonus – most of them wear costumes, so you’ll be sure to know who’s participating in RWE! It’s a bit late to register, but the clock never stops for donations. More info HERE.

This will give you and your kiddos the tools you need to make sure they are safe—and have a little fun too! From the website: “Start the day with a ride to school and receive snacks, drinks, and fun giveaways. Then join us for a youth bike safety demonstration given by the Sheriff’s Department with free BBQ and drinks, a bike safety obstacle course and swag. Not to mention, a lucky kid will go home with a new bike donated by Storm Cycles!”

Park City Film: “Long Night’s Journey Into Day”
7 PM @ Jim Santy Auditorium | Park City Library
After apartheid in South Africa, the country still had a long way to go when it came to reconciliation. Those who enforced and perpetuated the practice wanted amnesty, but their victims wanted justice. This documentary follows four cases that went before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. As it investigated the crimes of apartheid, the Commission brought together victims and perpetrators to relive South Africa’s brutal history. By revealing the past instead of burying it, the Commission hoped to pave the way to a peaceful future.

Regularly drawing en plein air, his pieces are inspired by the landscapes, city scenes, and big rocks he’s come across while traveling. Through his sketchbooks, paintings, and hand-drawn collages he seeks to capture the subtly interconnected elements that create a sense of place.

Zhi Lin: Chinaman’s Chance on Promontory Summit

Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland
Through May 25 @ Park City Museum
From the Park City Museum:
“The exhibition brings to life the excitement of Coney Island, showing visitors how its magnetic world of attractions has become a touchstone for American mass culture and popular recreation.  Adapted from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art’s flagship exhibition Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland, 1861–2008, this new traveling exhibition from NEH on the Road will explore America’s playground as a place and as an idea, examining its persistent presence in the American imagination.”

The Chinese Helped Build The Railroad – The Railroad Helped Build America Exhibit
Through June 1 @ Park City Library
We’ve just celebrated the sesquicentennial anniversary of the joining of the Trans-Atlantic Railroad in Utah, learn more about the people who actually helped build it. It’s All About The Land

May 15, 2019 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

The current Colony Master Plan started to evolve in 1992. But the real story began when John George Condas arrived at Ellis Island in 1903 and headed west. He settled in Utah and was one of the region’s providers of food for the large mining population.

“For the Condas family, it is all about the land. Always has been, always will be. This land represents a dream realized. A place to call home. A legacy to pass on to your children’s children. John George Condas realized his dream here. He arrived at Ellis Island from Greece in 1903, eventually making his way West and settling in Utah. In 1923, he began purchasing and homesteading these lands to establish a sheep ranch.

A hard-working man with an enterprising pioneer spirit, John earned his place as a respected businessman. This is the site of one of the original ranch buildings.

The spirit of family and friendship still echo here. Now the Condas family invites you to enjoy this historic homestead.”

Park City’s cool summers offered an ideal habitat for Condas’s large sheep herds, and they wandered the hills from June to November. It has been critical to The Colony project that the Condas family legacy lives on today. Developer Walt Brett and The Colony owners are committed to being good stewards of the land. This is expressed through the master planning, where the landscape remains the inspiration, and through the philosophy that “less is more.” This is apparent both in the development and in the construction of each dwelling, where every home is created in and of the land.

John George Condas

Echoes of The Colony’s legacy can be found in historical landmarks of the original Condas family settlement; they’re scattered throughout the development and manifest as a number of small sheepherder shelter remains. There are also quite a few massive aspen trees carved with the previous inhabitants’ initials – dating back to the early 1900s – documenting their presence in this magnificent White Pine Canyon.

Image of The Colony by Mark Maziarz

The devotion to this land is such that nearly 90% of the development’s 4,600 acres will remain pristine and untouched open space, protected with preservation easements.

The acreage now known as The Colony at White Pine Canyon was originally approved to develop 3,000 condos. Instead, Walt Brett developed what will eventually be just 274 spacious homesites. Current offerings average more than seven acres per lot, the largest to be found within just about any private, gated, ski-in/ski-out community in the world.

Meet Stephen Jeffers

May 7, 2019 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

Hi, I’m Stephen Jeffers, with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services and member of The Colony Sales Team here in Park City, Utah.

The Colony at White Pine Canyon has a special place in my heart: I have a unique family legacy with the property, being a descendant of the Condas family, who were the original homesteaders and sheepherders in 1923.

After I graduated from the University of Nevado-Reno, where I played college football, I decided to enter real estate. After a few successful years in the Reno | Lake Tahoe area, I jumped at the opportunity to be part of my family’s legacy here at The Colony at White Pine Canyon.

Over the last couple of years, I have truly fallen in love with this land, and have become an expert on what it has to offer. There’s nothing better than walking out your door and having the mountains at your fingertips, and being able to ski, mountain bike, hike, or do whatever it is that makes you happy.

Connect with me and I’d love the opportunity to show you why this land is so special – and how you can begin to build YOUR family’s legacy.

Summer’s not going to be fashionably late this year—she’s already sneaking in. The trails are greening up, wildflowers are stretching, and the puffy coats are officially in storage. Who’s ready for long hikes and longer days?
