New Park City Lift On-Target For Completion

The new Park City Mountain ski lift, Over and Out, is expected to run a load test in early December – and to be operational by the holidays. Similar timing, too, for the brand-new Tombstone BBQ, which has an opening date on or near December 17, 2019.

Over and Out is a fixed-grip quad, and is currently under construction near the bottom of Tombstone Express Lift, with a destination near the top of Sunrise Lift.

The new lift will provide one more portal of access to get to the northern side of the mountain, which means an easier route from the Park City Mountain Village to the Canyons Village side.

Once it’s done, the ride time is estimated to clock in at about five minutes, which would significantly shave the time currently required to get to Canyons Village from the base of Tombstone.

This lift will provide a quicker, more direct route for skiers and riders to access Canyons Village from the center of the resort.

From the press release: “As the name suggests, this lift will provide a quicker, more direct route for skiers and riders to access Canyons Village from the center of the resort.”

Over and Out’s completion will coincide with additional improvements in progress at Tombstone, namely a permanent restaurant – the Tombstone BBQ. It will include seating for up to 50 guests, indoor restrooms, and a beer bar, and is expected to be open in time for the 2019-20 season.

There are dozens of activities to do here in Park City, Summit, and Wasatch Counties (and a few we’re including that are in Salt Lake City, too!), so we thought a quick, easy guide could help. Park City Nursery
Haunted Forest & Pumpkin Patch
Grab your porch gourds and fall flowers – and then stroll through the classic Haunted Forest at Park City Nursery!

During operating hours, you and the fam can explore the pumpkin patch and take fall pics with the this year’s GORGEOUS fall backdrop – the colors are as bright as we’ve ever seen them here in Park City!

Scarecrow Walk
McPolin Farm
Scarecrows are out on display along the trail near the McPolin Farm! They’ll stay put through October 28.

The Pumpkin Train
Heber Valley Railroad Depot
Hop on the Heber Creeper for the annual Pumpkin Train experience! The 40-minute train ride is full of entertainment from costumed characters and music – not to mention the fresh, delicious pumpkin chocolate chip cookie you’ll be treated to toward the end of the ride.

Back at the depot, make sure you head over to see the family-friendly haunted train car (don’t forget to get your Halloween sticker). Right on down the line, you’ll see the pumpkin patch, where you can take some fun fall pictures and grab a pumpkin or two (a pumpkin is included with the purchase of your ticket). The Robot Zoo @ Swaner Eco Center

Corn Mazes

Voted among the nation’s 10 Best Corn Mazes, there are four of them to try at Cornbelly’s. The 2019 World of Wizards corn maze is a special nod to Harry Potter. The labyrinth is open day & night – and is never haunted. Plan on it taking about 30 – 45 minutes, including stops for interactive games and special wizard-themed trivia.

Then, hop on the “grain train” to ride through the Candy Corn Acres Maze. There’s also a kid-friendly 5-minute maze with a “find the gummy bear” feature. Finally, the Haunted Insanity Point Maze is only for those 12 and older, and has animatronics, live spooky hauntings, and a few surprises

Fall Adventures & Haunts

There are *dozens* of Fall Adventures for you to see and do at Cornbelly’s. From campfires to hayrides to pumpkin tetherball to the corn cob beach, you may need to come back a few times to hit everything.

The Haunts include walk-through spooky setups. The four scenes vary in scary, and include The Creature, which takes you through the belly of the beast; Big Top Terror, where you’ll encounter all sorts of circus freaks; Chaos Castle, which has you feel your way through a hay maze; and Hayloft Horror, where you have to wind your way around the animals who have all gone mad in the barn.

Halloween Lift Rides
Sundance Resort
Hop on Ray’s Lift for a family-friendly spooky Halloween lift ride! It takes about 45 minutes to an hour, and there are fun games, a Halloween movie at the base (weather-permitting), blankets for those who forget their own, and hot cocoa and snacks for sale.

If you decide to take a Halloween Zip Tour, a Lift Ride is included in that ticket. You can purchase your tickets online or in-person at the Ray’s Base Ticket Office. The lift rides spin through October 31 (closed Sunday the 21 and 28).

Sleepy Hollow Haunted Wagon Rides

There are few things we can imagine spookier than a horse-drawn wagon ride through the woods of Soldier Hollow, especially when you get to listen to a narration of Washington Irving’s original short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Even scarier – the woods are frequented by the apparition of the Headless Horseman! Through October 30 – reservations are required.

Pumpkin Nights

Utah State Fair Park
You’ll wander a half-mile walking path in the “Forbidden Pumpkin City” at Pumpkin Nights. There’s also a pirate’s cove and other fantastical lands, which are built using more than 3,000 hand-carved real and artificial pumpkins.
First, though, you’ll experience Pumpkin Central, with local food drinks, games, entertainment, and tons of photo opportunities.
There are eight difference pumpkin-themed lands, a Spirit of Pumpkins fire show, and demonstrations by professional pumpkin artists. The little ones can enjoy a scavenger hunt, a treasure dig, face painting, and a screening of Coco.

This classic falls scene is one that’s perfect for the littlest ones. There’s a pumpkin patch, hay maze, cow train, and wagon rides. Pumpkin Days events at Wheeler Farm run through October 31.

Navigate a hay maze on this working dairy farm (just watch out for any cow pies), pick a pumpkin from the patch to take home, and enjoy some delicious Aggie Ice Cream! Soups & grilled cheese sandwiches are available for purchase. Runs daily through October 31.

For more than 20 years, kids 12 and younger have worn their costumes to trick-or-treat at the Zoo! More than 20 candy booths are set up through Zoo grounds, and trick-or-treat bags are provided (while supplies last)! Be sure to bring your own, just in case, and join one of the biggest events at the Zoo!

This event is included with regular Zoo admission, and there’s an 8 a.m. early admission for Booster members.

Halloween Party

The Colony at White Pine Canyon is beautiful through all four of the seasons we get to enjoy here in Park City, Utah, but there’s something magic about the Meadow Lakes (in Phase 5) in autumn.

We invited Realtors in the Park City community to join us as we celebrated the completion of horizontal construction and infrastructure at The Colony – a party more than 20 years in the making!

It was a party packed with Ranger tours from The Colony Sales Team…

And spectacular weather and views from Mother Nature.

We also enjoyed these stunning flowers, created by Jennie Brett.

Developer Walt Brett brought his GMC pickup to the party, which made for our favorite beverage station – ever!

Jesse is a multiple time finalist at international poetry competitions such as the Individual World Poetry Slam, the National Poetry Slam and more. His book, The Noise That Is Not You, has gone through multiple publications after selling out, repeatedly, and his poetry has been seen by millions of people all over the world. Come help us build BDA’s on East Canyon Creek! A Beaver Dam Analog (BDA) is a man-made structure designed to mimic the form and function of a natural beaver dam. This will be a fun outdoor project to help improve habitat and water quality! We are partnering with Wild Utah project. We will have some waders and boots to borrow, but people should bring their own boots if they have them (the stream isn’t super deep). Kids 10+ are welcome to come along with a parent.

Scarecrow Festival is back at the McPolin Farm. Take the bus, bike, or park on Aspen Springs Drive and hike the trail, or use the tunnel to access the Farm from the east side of 224. Event tickets are $40 (for a group of four) and include pumpkins, refreshments, activities, one scarecrow support and stuffing material. Patios, Pools & the Invention of the American Backyard

This exhibit, part of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, shows the history of the American backyard—from pools to lawns, to BBQ grills. The Colony Project

Planning for The Colony at White Pine Canyon began back in 1993. Originally, Summit County approved a plan for 3300 units for the area.

Developer Walt Brett (of Iron Mountain Associates) had other plans, and today, there are 274 homesites planned for the project, which spans 4600 acres. About 90% of this project is open space – and always will be, thanks to preservation easements.

As the horizontal construction of The Colony at White Pine Canyon nears completion, here’s a look at what’s been accomplished since the project launched.

75 bridges have been built in The Colony at White Pine Canyon.
25+ miles of roads have been carved out and paved.
166 homes have been built in The Colony.
29 homes are currently under construction in The Colony.
90% of this land will always be preserved as open space, thanks to preservation easements.

Park City Event Guide: September 20 – 26

It’s time to get spooky! Halloween is just around the corner so get in the spirit with Thriller! By Odyssey Dance Theater at the Egyptian Theater. It runs through October 6^th– so prepare to be mystified and mesmerized by a cast of morbid monsters and maniacs.

And if that’s not enough pre-Halloween spookiness, learn the History of the Glenwood Cemetery at the Park City Museum on Wednesday, September 25^th. Glenwood Cemetery is on the National Register of Historic Places and is owned by the Park City Museum.

Barbara Martz will share the history of Glenwood Cemetery as it was established for miners and their families when Park City was a silver mining town. She will also explain the demographic profiles of the deceased in the Cemetery including the years of burial, ages at death, causes of death, etc. Barbara will also tell a few stories of the lives and deaths of the people who are buried at Glenwood Cemetery and finish with a summary of the current status of the Cemetery.

Free Youth Mental Health First Aid Training

Do know how to respond to an adolescent who may be experiencing mental distress or substance abuse? Youth Mental Health First Aid Training is designed to teach parents, teachers and anyone who works with teens how to identify and intervene when necessary. Topics include typical adolescent development along with anxiety, depression, substance use, and other psychiatric disorders. Learn an easy-to-remember 5-step action plan to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Backcountry x NAC: Stoke Series Live Fundraising Event

Stoke Series Live presents an evening of great food, drink, and adventure storytelling in support of the National Ability Center. Opening of “Jim Jacobs: The Imperfections That Render Us Visible”

The Main Gallery exhibit is open September 20, 2019 – November 3, 2019. Intersections fascinate Jim Jacobs. In this body of work, he borrows a technique traditionally used to join two distinct plants, often trees, to make them more productive. Natural tree limbs are grafted to milled lumber, wooden tools, furniture, and even hair. These works—gangly, elegant, contrived, fragile, and at times self-destructive—are reflections on our peculiar relationship with the natural world.

Utah Book Authors Humanities Event: Local Authors Panel

The 22nd Annual Utah Humanities Book Festival is Utah’s oldest and only statewide book festival. Meet and celebrate local authors living or writing about the Wasatch Back, followed by a reception. Park City Film: The Last Black Man in San Francisco

U.S. dramatic directing award-winner at the Sundance Film Festival, The Last Black Man in San Francisco weaves the tale of two friends searching for home in rapidly changing San Francisco. I saw this film at Sundance this year – and it is a beautiful film.

Utah Humanities Book Festival: John Branch

New York Times reporter John Birch’s feature article about an avalanche in Washington State, “Snow Fall” won the Pulitzer Prize, and he has been featured five times in The Best American Sports Writing. His latest book, “The Last Cowboys,” is an intimate portrait of a Southern Utah rodeo family as they fight for their land and livelihood.

Homestead Summer Concerts

David Hogg and Jaclyn Corin are survivors of the high school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. After losing friends, classmates, and teachers, they mobilized into action, lobbying state government officials, and planning March For Our Lives—now one of the world’s largest youth-led movements. Apple Tree Pruning 101

Learn the basics principles for pruning and maintaining apple trees with strategies to improve fruit quality from the folks at Summit County Community Gardens.

Code Club

In this informal educational setting, kids will learn computer-programming skills through a series of tutorials and projects. They will work towards building websites, video games, phone apps, animations and more, all the while, learning how to become better problem solvers and critical thinkers.

Pop-in Plein Air

Every Tuesday, various experts will lead artists through the fundamentals of landscape painting while teaching plein air skills and techniques. These drop-in sessions allow you to work with your own materials in a variety of media.

Stop by and pick up fresh fruit for a mid-hike snack, a bundle of organic vegetables for your family dinner, or locally made jams, jellies, trinkets, or jewelry to take home as a souvenir each Wednesday from 12:00 – 5:00 PM. Not only does buying local food help our community, it also helps our environment by reducing carbon dioxide emissions and packing materials, as well as helping to make farming more profitable.

Stream and Riparian Restoration

Come help build a Beaver Dam Analog—which mimic a natural beaver dam. Dams help improve habitat and water quality! They will have some waders and boots to borrow, but people should bring their own boots if they have them.

Morning Wellness Workshop at Sage Mountain Animal Sanctuary

Sage Mountain Animal Sanctuary is holding a wellness event every Thursday at 9:00 am from June 6th through September 26th. Enjoy 45 minutes of fitness followed by 45 minutes of flow yoga. Free, but donations are suggested.
