The Colony at White Pine Canyon

Park City, Utah Real Estate | Home Sites and Custom Homes

Meet Colony Developer Walt Brett

June 10, 2019 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

Hello, I’m Walt Brett. I’m the developer of The Colony.

I first started coming to Park City 43 years ago. In 1998, I moved to Park City from the San Diego area, where I had been building custom homes since I ended my football career. My wife Jennie grew up here and remembers when Park City had no stoplights. Park City has changed, but the small town feel has remained. Jennie and I enjoy participating in the Park City community and taking advantage of the active lifestyle, where we can blend work and play into our everyday life.

Being intrinsically involved with this magnificent piece of property has kept me very busy and professionally fulfilled. I have had the distinct pleasure of overseeing the design, development, and construction of the 26 miles of roads, 73 bridges, 11 ski lifts and 100 plus ski trails that are inside of the Colony’s 4300 acres.

Being the developer of the Colony allows me to enjoy my winter and summer passions while I work. I grew up in Lake Tahoe, California and have been an avid skier for 60 years. Skiing is in my blood. Living and working in a ski resort is an incredible experience. Every winter, I spend as much time on the mountain as possible. I ski, snowshoe and snowmobile with our owners, guests, and planners to receive valuable insight and feedback on how we are doing with the development.  In the summer I am on my bike or hiking with Bridger, laying out new home sites, roads, and ski trails while overseeing our contractors who are physically building the next phase of our development.

Through the years, our development team has worked exceptionally hard to make The Colony unique and special. I am confident that once you experience this incredible place, first-hand, you will agree.

I have walked every inch of this ground and been part of this place we call the Colony from the very beginning. I encourage you to engage our incredible Sales Team to explore The Colony on your own private tour. We all enjoy sharing the story of this place and why The Colony continues to be the best place to build your family’s legacy.

The Colony at White Pine Canyon is the largest gated ski-in / ski-out community in the United States. Our land spans 4600 acres, and approximately 90% of it will always be preserved as open space.

In winter, enjoy exclusive ski and snowboard access to one of North America’s largest mountain resorts, Park City Mountain. In spring, the snow melts to reveal an amazing network of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, connecting to more than 400 miles of single-track trails throughout the surrounding area.

The Colony is just 35 minutes from Salt Lake International Airport and 5 minutes to Park City’s historic Main Street, home to the Sundance Film Festival and world-class dining and shopping.

Park City Event Guide: Memorial Day | May 24 – 30

May 24, 2019 by Shelby Hintze, Colony PR

This weekend marks the official start of summer! (Yes, it also snowed this week – but SUMMER!) Memorial Day also marks the start of the 100 deadliest days on Utah roads. UDOT and UHP say that 94% (!!!) of crashes during this time are caused by human error. So, as you get ready to have fun, make sure you’re also being smart behind the wheel and helping any of your young drivers create good habits.

There’s a ton of stuff going on around Park City this weekend, so take a look, make a plan, and make the most of your three-day weekend!

Park City Mountain Opening Day: May 24, 2019

May 24, 2019 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

There are three seasons in Park City: Ski season, shoulder season, and SUMMER. Luckily, we are near the sunny-season mark (WE HOPE?!) – suntime-funtime life is now officially in full swing at Park City Mountain Village! Here’s an overview of what you and your family can enjoy starting today (Friday, May 24).

MOUNTAIN BIKING AND HIKING

Two of our favorite summer activities on the mountain are self-guided; lace up or velcro your preferred shoe, and take advantage of the miles of trails networking through Park City Mountain (some of them take you through The Colony, too!).

Mountain biking at Park City Mountain (Photo courtesy: Park City Mountain)

Mountain Biking: Shredding applies in summer, too, and the beauty of activities at the resort is that there are options for support if you need it! You can rent mountain bikes at the Village, then hop on Crescent or Pay Day Chairlift so you can focus on the downhill. Bike haul tickets are also available for purchase.

More from Park City Mountain:
Three lifts provide bike access during the summer at Park City Mountain and are centrally located amongst some of Park City’s most beautiful trails. The Payday lift will operate for early-season biking and hiking access beginning Friday, May 24 at the Park City Mountain Village.

On Friday, June 14, the high-speed four-passenger Crescent Lift will open for bike access and Payday lift will shift to scenic rides. Crescent Lift runs out of the Park City Mountain Village and unloads mountain bikers at access points for the IMBA recognized “Epic Ride” on the Mid-Mountain Trail.

The Red Pine Gondola at Canyons Village will also open on June 14 and provides access to miles of gorgeous cross-country biking and hiking trails.

Bike rentals are available on-site at Legacy Sports and Canyon Mountain Sports. Please refer to www.parkcitymountain.com for summer mountain bike rates, hours of operation, reservations and more information. 20% off rentals reserved in advance here.”

Hiking: Whether you’re walking or running, the trails are equal opportunity stunners. Grab a trail map and escape in into the mountains – trekking through the trees is the perfect way to cool off on a hot day, and there are options for all levels of ability.

ALPINE SLIDE & ALPINE COASTER

Alpine Slide: More than 3,000 feet of WHEE!: PCM’s Alpine Slide is among the longest in the world. And with three tracks to choose from, each luge-like launch is a different experience.

Alpine Coaster: Prefer a mountain ride on rails? Buckle into the Alpine Coaster. The winding track slings you through more than a mile of mountainside; carving and looping at speeds up to 30 mph. And if you want to slow down and enjoy the incredible scenery, there’s an easy-to-reach brake on your coaster car.

ZIP LINES

If being above the treetops is more your thing, zip lines at Park City Mountain will make it happen. Relish the views at 110 feet off the ground, and enjoy the wind in your face as you’re propelled at speeds up to 45 mph. The Flying Eagle is a two-seater, and the ZipRider™is a fun chance to race your friends.

MINI GOLF & ADVENTURE ZONE

Catch your breath at the base of the Village and enjoy an 18-hole round of miniature golf. And if the kids want to see more action while you’re puttering around, there are seven other ways for you to tucker them out before it’s time to tuck them into bed.

  • Legacy Launcher – four trampolines (with safety harnesses) let the kiddos bounce all their energy out – and safely try tricks under supervision.
  • Kids’ Zip – avoid the too-small-for-the-big-zip-line meltdown and head straight here for full-scale thrills at a size that’s perfect for your little one.
  • Kids’ Rope Course – another age and size-appropriate way for kids to safely try some big challenges.
  • Boulders – the smallest climbers can experience Southern Utah terrain from the comfort of Park City.
  • Climbing Wall – safety climbing harnesses and trained attendants give kids a chance to explore scaling a big-time wall – with five different routes to try.
  • Kids’ Tubing – tubing is now a summer sport; no need for snow to experience this adventure!
  • Gem Panning – experience Park City’s mining legacy while you pan for gems in the interactive flume.

GOLF

Canyons Golf will open for the season on Friday, May 24. This 18-hole, par-70 course is located steps away from the Grand Summit Hotel, a RockResort at the base of Canyons Village and features over 550 feet of elevation change. Designed by renowned course architects Gene and Casey Bates, Canyons Golf offers a challenging and enjoyable course characterized by memorable shots and dramatic views.

Some of the most fun to be had in the summer is scoring local produce and products at the Park City Farmer’s Market and spreading out a picnic blanket and snacking while you listen to open-air mountainside music. Luckily, you’ll get to enjoy both of those experiences – along with a couple of new ones this year! – in just a few short weeks. Here’s the rundown from Park City Mountain:

Park City Farmer’s Market: June 12 – October 16
The Park City Farmer’s Market is a seasonal market held at the base of the Park City Mountain Village every Wednesday this summer from noon to 5 p.m. Open from June through October, the market showcases local Utah vendors and artisans with fresh produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods, crafts and more. More details here.

Kids Adventure Games, June 14-15
Park City Mountain will host the Kids Adventure Games this June 14-15 outside of Red Pine Lodge at Canyons Village. Designed exclusively for kids ages 6-14, the Kids Adventure Games is a multi-discipline adventure race. Kids, in teams of two, compete together on bikes, in water and on foot through a challenging adventure course, featuring manmade and natural obstacles like zip lines, massive cargo nets, ropes courses, river tubing, giant slip-and-slides and more! Kids learn the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, problem solving, the importance of an active lifestyle and an appreciation for the outdoors.

Farm-to-Table Dinners at Legends, June 22, July 27, August 24, and September 28
Returning this summer, the talented chefs at Legends will offer a series of four farm-to-table dinners beginning in late June. The monthly prix fixe dinners will feature locally-sourced seasonal ingredients and showcase the creative talents of the chefs.

How The New Park City Mountain Lift Could Make Ski Days Easier Next Winter

May 23, 2019 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

Over and Out. That’s the name of the new Park City Mountain lift, planned to be done just in time for Christmas.

The fixed-grip quad will be constructed near the bottom of Tombstone Express Lift, with a destination near the top of Sunrise Lift.

The new lift will provide one more portal of access to get to the northern side of the mountain, which means an easier route from the Park City Mountain Village to the Canyons Village side.

Once it’s done, the ride time is estimated to clock in at about five minutes, which would significantly shave the time currently required to get to Canyons Village from the base of Tombstone.

This lift will provide a quicker, more direct route for skiers and riders to access Canyons Village from the center of the resort.

From the press release: “As the name suggests, this lift will provide a quicker, more direct route for skiers and riders to access Canyons Village from the center of the resort.”

Construction on Over and Out is scheduled to begin this summer, with completion targeted for the December holidays. It will coincide with additional improvements in progress at Tombstone, namely a permanent restaurant – the Tombstone BBQ. It will include seating for up to 50 guests, indoor restrooms, and a beer bar, and is expected to be open in time for the 2019-20 season.

It’s All About The Land

May 15, 2019 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

The current Colony Master Plan started to evolve in 1992. But the real story began when John George Condas arrived at Ellis Island in 1903 and headed west. He settled in Utah and was one of the region’s providers of food for the large mining population.

“For the Condas family, it is all about the land. Always has been, always will be. This land represents a dream realized. A place to call home. A legacy to pass on to your children’s children. John George Condas realized his dream here. He arrived at Ellis Island from Greece in 1903, eventually making his way West and settling in Utah. In 1923, he began purchasing and homesteading these lands to establish a sheep ranch.

A hard-working man with an enterprising pioneer spirit, John earned his place as a respected businessman. This is the site of one of the original ranch buildings.

The spirit of family and friendship still echo here. Now the Condas family invites you to enjoy this historic homestead.”

Park City’s cool summers offered an ideal habitat for Condas’s large sheep herds, and they wandered the hills from June to November. It has been critical to The Colony project that the Condas family legacy lives on today. Developer Walt Brett and The Colony owners are committed to being good stewards of the land. This is expressed through the master planning, where the landscape remains the inspiration, and through the philosophy that “less is more.” This is apparent both in the development and in the construction of each dwelling, where every home is created in and of the land.

John George Condas

Echoes of The Colony’s legacy can be found in historical landmarks of the original Condas family settlement; they’re scattered throughout the development and manifest as a number of small sheepherder shelter remains. There are also quite a few massive aspen trees carved with the previous inhabitants’ initials – dating back to the early 1900s – documenting their presence in this magnificent White Pine Canyon.

Image of The Colony by Mark Maziarz

The devotion to this land is such that nearly 90% of the development’s 4,600 acres will remain pristine and untouched open space, protected with preservation easements.

The acreage now known as The Colony at White Pine Canyon was originally approved to develop 3,000 condos. Instead, Walt Brett developed what will eventually be just 274 spacious homesites. Current offerings average more than seven acres per lot, the largest to be found within just about any private, gated, ski-in/ski-out community in the world.

Connect with The Colony Sales Team Lead, Bronson Calder, and Sales Team member Stephen Jeffers, for your private tour of this breathtaking land. Read about Stephen Jeffers’ personal connection to the Condas legacy HERE.
