Park City Event Guide: September 20 – 26

It’s time to get spooky! Halloween is just around the corner so get in the spirit with Thriller! By Odyssey Dance Theater at the Egyptian Theater. It runs through October 6^th– so prepare to be mystified and mesmerized by a cast of morbid monsters and maniacs.

And if that’s not enough pre-Halloween spookiness, learn the History of the Glenwood Cemetery at the Park City Museum on Wednesday, September 25^th. Glenwood Cemetery is on the National Register of Historic Places and is owned by the Park City Museum.

Barbara Martz will share the history of Glenwood Cemetery as it was established for miners and their families when Park City was a silver mining town. She will also explain the demographic profiles of the deceased in the Cemetery including the years of burial, ages at death, causes of death, etc. Barbara will also tell a few stories of the lives and deaths of the people who are buried at Glenwood Cemetery and finish with a summary of the current status of the Cemetery.

Free Youth Mental Health First Aid Training

Do know how to respond to an adolescent who may be experiencing mental distress or substance abuse? Youth Mental Health First Aid Training is designed to teach parents, teachers and anyone who works with teens how to identify and intervene when necessary. Topics include typical adolescent development along with anxiety, depression, substance use, and other psychiatric disorders. Learn an easy-to-remember 5-step action plan to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Artful Afternoon

Parents’ Survival Night

A break from the kids *and* a break from the parents – it’s a survival night for all of us. Parents can use the time to enjoy a movie or a quiet meal out while the kids get quality “kid time” in a safe, fun place with trained instructors who lead them through music, games, and fun. Backcountry x NAC: Stoke Series Live Fundraising Event

Stoke Series Live presents an evening of great food, drink, and adventure storytelling in support of the National Ability Center. Opening of “Jim Jacobs: The Imperfections That Render Us Visible”

The Main Gallery exhibit is open September 20, 2019 – November 3, 2019. Intersections fascinate Jim Jacobs. In this body of work, he borrows a technique traditionally used to join two distinct plants, often trees, to make them more productive. Natural tree limbs are grafted to milled lumber, wooden tools, furniture, and even hair. These works—gangly, elegant, contrived, fragile, and at times self-destructive—are reflections on our peculiar relationship with the natural world.

Utah Book Authors Humanities Event: Local Authors Panel

The 22nd Annual Utah Humanities Book Festival is Utah’s oldest and only statewide book festival. Meet and celebrate local authors living or writing about the Wasatch Back, followed by a reception. Park City Film: The Last Black Man in San Francisco

U.S. dramatic directing award-winner at the Sundance Film Festival, The Last Black Man in San Francisco weaves the tale of two friends searching for home in rapidly changing San Francisco. I saw this film at Sundance this year – and it is a beautiful film.

Utah Humanities Book Festival: John Branch

New York Times reporter John Birch’s feature article about an avalanche in Washington State, “Snow Fall” won the Pulitzer Prize, and he has been featured five times in The Best American Sports Writing. His latest book, “The Last Cowboys,” is an intimate portrait of a Southern Utah rodeo family as they fight for their land and livelihood.

David Hogg and Jaclyn Corin are survivors of the high school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. After losing friends, classmates, and teachers, they mobilized into action, lobbying state government officials, and planning March For Our Lives—now one of the world’s largest youth-led movements. Learn the basics principles for pruning and maintaining apple trees with strategies to improve fruit quality from the folks at Summit County Community Gardens.

Code Club

In this informal educational setting, kids will learn computer-programming skills through a series of tutorials and projects. They will work towards building websites, video games, phone apps, animations and more, all the while, learning how to become better problem solvers and critical thinkers.

Pop-in Plein Air

Every Tuesday, various experts will lead artists through the fundamentals of landscape painting while teaching plein air skills and techniques. These drop-in sessions allow you to work with your own materials in a variety of media.

Stop by and pick up fresh fruit for a mid-hike snack, a bundle of organic vegetables for your family dinner, or locally made jams, jellies, trinkets, or jewelry to take home as a souvenir each Wednesday from 12:00 – 5:00 PM. Not only does buying local food help our community, it also helps our environment by reducing carbon dioxide emissions and packing materials, as well as helping to make farming more profitable.

Stream and Riparian Restoration

Come help build a Beaver Dam Analog—which mimic a natural beaver dam. Dams help improve habitat and water quality! They will have some waders and boots to borrow, but people should bring their own boots if they have them.

Morning Wellness Workshop at Sage Mountain Animal Sanctuary

Sage Mountain Animal Sanctuary is holding a wellness event every Thursday at 9:00 am from June 6th through September 26th. Enjoy 45 minutes of fitness followed by 45 minutes of flow yoga. Free, but donations are suggested.

Patios, Pools & the Invention of the American Backyard

This exhibit, part of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, shows the history of the American backyard—from pools to lawns, to BBQ grills. From the Park City Museum “Through rare photographs, historic drawings and period advertisements, Patios, Pools, & the Invention of the American Backyard explores the mid-century backyard of the 1950s from the rise of the suburbs and tract houses and the beauty of postwar garden design to the birth of the environmental movement.”

The back to school routine is starting to become well, routine. Luckily, there are a lot of fun things happening this weekend to break the monotony, as we gear up for what the pumpkin spice aficionados call the best time of year — FALL.

In fact, it’s already snowed here at least once – so winter really doesn’t seem too far off at the moment. Get out and enjoy some crisper temperatures without having to bundle up in a million layers. There are some great hikes, concerts, and, oh yes, this cool hot air balloon festival called Autumn Aloft – all happening in Park City this weekend.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14

Autumn Aloft

See balloonists paint the sky at Autumn Aloft!

Watching more than two dozen hot air balloons inflate and launch is the stuff kids’ dreams and Instagram feeds are made of. And, in addition to the main, colorful launch in the morning, be sure to catch the “Candlestick” magic (choreographed balloon burners spitting fire into the dark sky!) in Old Town in the evening. Main Street shuts down – and turns out all its lights – for this spectacle.

At the main launch, tethered rides may be available on a first-come, first-served basis (but are not guaranteed). And this year, GOBA Springfree Trampolines will have two demo areas, and if you make a purchase, you save $200 – and that money all goes to the Park City Historic Alliance. An inaugural, two-day music festival celebrating folk, Americana, country, rock, and soul artists. Park City will host 40+ musicians over two days in five venues located on Historic Main Street.

Hike for Hunger

Christian Center of Park City’s Eighth annual “Hike for Hunger” event, raising awareness of local hunger while highlighting our community’s efforts to achieve Zero Food Waste by diverting food to those in need. Swaner’s Avian Adventures 4

This is the last birding tour on the Preserve in 2019. Legendary Utah birder Kenny Frisch guides an early morning excursion to view and identify local and migratory feathered friends on the Preserve. Please wear hiking shoes or boots that can get wet, and be prepared for uneven soggy ground. Binoculars provided, or bring your own if you have a pair you prefer.

Tour de Suds
10 AM @ City Park
This 7-mile bike race is for everyone. Treat it like a full on competition and go for the gold (read: yes, there are prizes) or just have fun and wear a zany costume. It’s a 2,700 incline from City Park to the Skullcandy Party Station aka Finish Line. Head back down to the park for lunch and “suds” from Red Rock Brewery.

Park City Event Guide: Miners’ Day Parade & Celebration: Monday, September 2nd, 2019

This year marks our town’s 123nd celebration of Miners’ Day!

Each year, the Park City Rotary Club hosts an all-day festival of fun to honor our town’s mining heritage. Most activities and festivities happen along Historic Main Street, with the food featured at City Park. The Rotary Club estimates that more than 17,000 people enjoyed last year’s Miners’ Day merriment. Here’s the fun rundown for Monday, September 2:

7:30 – 9:30 AM – Miners’ Day Breakfast, City Park
8 AM – Miners’ Day Bark City 5k Run, City Park (bring your dog)
10:30 AM – Running of the Balls, Main Street (get there early to buy balls)

Breakfast @ City Park
If you’re among the few who are up and at ’em before 8 a.m., you know how peaceful Park City feels at that time of the morning. So come out early – the breakfast begins at 7:30 – and enjoy some quiet time with a stack of pancakes, ham, eggs, hash browns, and more. The breakfast is provided by St. Mary’s Catholic Church and proceeds from the $5 per person feast go to help religious education programs (kids 4 and under eat for free). If you’re among the 5K runners, it’s a terrific way to fuel back up for your day of events!

Miners’ Day 5K @ City Park
Not beginning with breakfast? Start with the fun-run!

The Miners’ Day 5k (also known as the Bark City 5K) starts in City Park, loops through the trails, and ends right back where you started so you can grab food. The race is organized by the Park City Rotary Club. While the fast 5K course is pleasant enough, you’re encouraged to make things extra fun with a costume – and/or your dog! Strollers are also welcome; that group starts behind the other runners.

Proceeds from the 5K will be funneled back into our community in the form of a grant from the Rotary Club Park City.

World-Famous Running of the Balls @ Historic Main Street
You better get to Main Street early if you want a spot where you can actually *see* this event. It is PACKED with people. And yes, it gets its name from the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain. This event, however, usually results in fewer injuries.

Anyone can “adopt” a yellow golf ball for $5 – or 5 for $20. The nearly 10,000 balls are released at the top of Main and shoot into a track. The first balls through the chute win INSANE prizes like season ski passes, hotel stays, fabulous dinners, and tons of other options. Dozens of additional prizes are given away for the close finishers. It’s no wonder people get so hyped up about this race. The best place to post up for the finish line is near the post office, and winners are posted in City Park and on the Miners’ Day website.

You can purchase your balls from any member of the Park City Rotary Club, on Historic Main Street on the day-of, and at the Park Silly Market the day before Miners’ Day!

The main event on Main Street for the day – this parade marches down Main, skips over to Park Ave., and finishes at City Park. It begins at 11 a.m., but if you’re running on Park City time and arrive a few minutes late you’ll likely still get to see everything!

Live Music – Changing Lanes Experience @ City Park Stage
The omnipresent Mountain Town Music is at it again, programming terrific live music for our community to enjoy together. At 11:30 a.m., you can enjoy the Changing Lanes Experience. If you’ve never seen this group, you will soon learn why they have “experience” in their name.

At 3, enjoy Memphis McCool – which can best be described as “power soul” music. The group creates all-new music in a modern take on soul and groove music.

BBQ Lunch @ City Park
You can truly make this a day without having to head home at all – there are things to do, see, and eat all day long! Lunch will bring you back to City Park for a BBQ cookout courtesy of Kumbayah Kitchen. There will be beverages and brews (bring your ID, they *will* check), but bring your own blanket to enjoy the feast!

Family Fun @ City Park
If you’re going to stay out of the house all day, you’re going to need some stuff to keep the kids entertained. Luckily, Kids Races start at 12:30 p.m. in City Park. With running races, a sack race (gunny sacks provided), and a wheelbarrow race (we are cracking up just thinking about this one), there are races for little ones of all ages.

No worries, there are also bouncy houses, crafting booths, a climbing wall, a fire truck (!), and, new this year, a dunk tank! Enjoy face painting, henna tattoos, a dog & cat adoption event, a shaved-ice shack, gourmet cotton candy, and Texas Twisters (described as a cold sweet blended fruit-based drink). We can only imagine (with slight trepidation) how exhausted the kiddos will be after a day of all this fun!

Mucking & Drilling Competition @ Skateboard Park parking lot
Wondering where the actual “miner” activities are in Miners’ Day? Show up at City Park for Mucking & Drilling and you won’t be in the dark anymore. Competitors come from all around the Mountain West to compete!

Mucking is loading ore into an ore cart (using heavy machinery), and then dumping it as quickly as possible. A timer watches this carefully.

Drilling is when the competitors “manhandle” a huge compressed-air hammer drill and hoses to put two deep holes into a slab of rock in the shortest amount of time.

We’re told you need to arrive early to get a spot on the bleachers – and best of all, the event is free!

Skateboard Bowl Jam @ Skateboard Park
If skateboarding is more your speed, there’s also a competition for you to watch in that world! The contest is for both amateurs and pros, with prizes for each division. You *d0* need to register in advance, and helmets are required. You can find more information here.

No wonder Miners’ Day has been going strong for 123 years. Get out there (by riding the free bus or your bike!) and have fun!

Soldier Hollow Classic

Four days of family fun and competition featuring the world’s top sheepdogs and herders. Experience sheep-shearing, herding, agility courses, and dock-jumping, with demonstrations including Earthwings Raptors Showings, bagpipes, and Navajo weaving.

Yoga on the Patio

All are welcome for a free community yoga class every Friday. Classes will be held outside on the patio or inside the Park City Library depending on the weather. Please bring a yoga mat. This program is in partnership with the Park City MARC.

Oktoberfest
All Weekend @ Canyons Village at Park City Mountain
Transport yourself to a mini-Munich at the Canyons Village for the resort’s inaugural Oktoberfest. The family-friendly event kicks off Friday with the official opening ceremonies, followed by a weekend full of celebration for all. Guests will be invited to enjoy German beer in the Bavarian Beer Hall, explore authentic fare in the Bavarian Market, listen to Oompah and Polka music, participate in traditional dance and stein lifting competitions, enjoy the Kinder Kids’ zone and much more. Fun and funky, the annual Miners’ Day parade down historic Main Street attracts marching bands and community floats as Park City celebrates its mining heritage. Put your blanket down on the curb with the kids and be ready for the fun. The parade begins around 11:00 a.m., just after the annual Running of the Balls down Main Street. The parade route runs the length of Main Street, before skipping over to Park Avenue and on down to City Park.

Park City Event Guide: Park City Mountain’s First-Ever Oktoberfest

Massive steins loaded with lager. Lederhosen and laced-up dirndl. You know what this means – OKTOBERFEST! And this year, for the first time ever, a local spin on the classic German festival will pitch the beer tent a bit closer to home.

This weekend, Park City Mountain’s Canyons Village will transform itself into a mini-Munich, loaded with fun for the entire fam. The beer starts flowing tomorrow (Friday, August 30), after the official opening ceremonies and doesn’t stop until 10 p.m. on Sunday.

Art on the Trail

Experience nature and art while enjoying pop-up, creative performances on Park City’s beautiful McCleod Creek Trail (along the stretch of trail between Copper Moose Farm and Temple Har Shalom). Performances include dance, poetry, folk music, classical music, and will be scattered throughout a flat, shaded portion of the one-mile section of trail.

The Park City-based rock-and-roll band Muddpuddle thrills audiences with a blend of original and cover music in a wide variety of styles. The line-up consists of Cole Hobbs and Marty Klein on guitars, Phil Dean on Bass, Mike Rogers on Keyboards, Matt Gordon on Drums, and Johnny Leone on Saxophone. This concert will be held at the PayDay Pad in the Park City Mountain Village.

Canyons Village Summer Concert Series: The Motet
6 PM @ Canyons Village at Park City Mountain Resort
Every Thursday and Saturday night, the resort will host a free, outdoor concert. This week, The Motet is the featured performer. A concert or an album can unlock another world if you let it. The Motet respects and reveres this time-honored phenomenon. Fusing fiery funk, simmering soul, and improvisational inventiveness, the Denver, CO seven-piece—Lyle Divinsky [vocals], Dave Watts [drums], Joey Porter [keyboards], Garrett Sayers [bass], Ryan Jalbert [guitar], Parris Fleming [trumpet], and Drew Sayers [saxophone]—have continually provided an escape for listeners over the course of seven full-length albums since 1998.

Avian Adventures 3
7 AM @ Swaner Eco-Center and Preserve
Participate in the third of four birding adventures on the Swaner Preserve. Legendary Utah Birder Kenny Frisch guides this early morning tour to view and identifies local and migratory birds on the preserve. Wear comfortable shoes or boots that can get wet, and be prepared for uneven ground.

Park Silly Farmer’s Market
10 AM – 5 PM @ Park City’s Historic Main Street
One of my favorite parts of summer is farmer’s markets. And this weekend, Park Silly kicks off. Every Sunday, local and regional arts and crafts, music and performance art, antiques, imports, and one-of-a-kind finds, delicious gourmet foods, and farmer’s market fruits and vegetables all converge on Park City’s Historic Main Street. From 10 am to 5 pm, stroll the streets, eat lots of food and enjoy the entertainment!

Walk A Mile in Her Shoes

Join the Peace House of Park City for this fun and quirky fundraiser. Men march with signs and their favorite heels while women join alongside as blister sisters. Teams and fun costumes encouraged.

Village Live Music: Dana Williams
4 PM – 7 PM @ Park City Mountain Village
Sun’s out, outdoor concerts out (That’s what the kids are saying, right?) From PCMR’s website “Three-time mayor of Park City and beloved local activist, Dana Williams takes the stage as a solo artist, performing acoustic rock music. Williams has been part of the staple Park City act, Motherlode Canyon Band, for more than two decades.” The concert will take place on the Legends patio at Park City Mountain Village.

DIG In
August 25, 3 PM @ Summit Community Gardens
EATS and Summit Community Gardens created DIG In to bring people together around food. This community-focused event sells out to 400 guests every year! Held at Summit Community Gardens on August 25, 2019, this is one of the most beautiful outdoor events in town for the whole family. The fundraiser supports EATS-Eat Awesome Things at School. EATS offers community classes and programs to make sure every student in the Park City School District is getting the best nutrition possible—at school and at home.

Deer Valley’s Tuesday Twilight Series

Take the chance to experience the mountain in the evenings again this summer with the Twilight Ride Series. Lift-served mountain biking is available on Silver Lake Express, Homestake Express, and Sterling Express chairlifts. And if you reserve in advance, you can get some mountain bike lessons as well.

Hops on the Hill

Taste the delectable flavors of summer with Hops on the Hill, where you’ll experience favorites from local craft breweries and some of Chef Zane’s best food pairings on the deck with live music on the lawn.

Pop in to help with some restoration work and get an up-close look at the Preserve! Restoration projects will consist of removal of invasive weeds and help with other miscellaneous projects on the Preserve. We will meet at the EcoCenter.

Come left off some creative steam. Make and take your crafty project every week. All ages welcome.

From the PCMR website “Anyone familiar with the Americana music scene knows this Upstate, New York-based band has cut their teeth on a killer live show. With a never-ending tour schedule and a steady buzz, they have built a very solid underground fan base. “The game has been live shows and nose to the ground since the beginning,” says guitarist/songwriter Dan Forsyth. As well as a devout following and a sizable discography, the band’s hard work has also been a huge part of the inspiration for their music. The songs and arrangements have grown out of time spent on the road, growing closer, learning with and from each other and weathering the up’s and down’s of the journey together.”
