Park City Event Guide: Memorial Day | May 24 – 30

This weekend marks the official start of summer! (Yes, it also snowed this week – but SUMMER!) Memorial Day also marks the start of the 100 deadliest days on Utah roads. UDOT and UHP say that 94% (!!!) of crashes during this time are caused by human error. So, as you get ready to have fun, make sure you’re also being smart behind the wheel and helping any of your young drivers create good habits.

There’s a ton of stuff going on around Park City this weekend, so take a look, make a plan, and make the most of your three-day weekend!

This weekend—Utah Olympic Park opens for the early summer season. You can learn about the park’s beginnings in the free museum or take a ride on the summer bobsled. The park’s summer experiences include the extreme zip line, zip line tour, alpine slide, drop tower, adventure courses and scenic chairlift rides (not all activities are open early season). Early season hours 10 a.m.–6 p.m. daily. And Park City Mountain Resort opens for its summer season as well! Check out the alpine coaster or brave the mud to discover the mountain’s hiking and biking trails. Early season hours 10 a.m.–6 p.m. daily.

Artful Afternoon
1 – 3:30 PM @ Kimball Art Center
An after-school program to encourage kids to explore art. Kiddos get to try a variety of fun materials and drop-ins are welcome; the 30 dollar fee includes instruction, supervision, and all materials. Lego Club
1—2 PM @ Park City Library
An hour of Lego BLISS. The Park City Library hosts this every week for builders of all ages. Duplos for the younger architects, IKOS for the master builders and lots and lots of LEGOS for everyone in-between.

Wild West Days on Heber Valley Railroad
May 24-27 @ Heber Valley Railroad
Head back to the Wild, Wild West on the Heber Creeper. Your ticket includes a 40-minute train ride aboard the historic train. On board, you’ll be entertained by Krazy Ani and a western sing-a-long. After the ride, check out a staged gun fight, and a magic show. And Friday and Saturday nights, there will be a free dance. Go HERE to check out the schedule and buy your tickets.

Mary Montana – Spanish Surf and Turf
6 – 9 PM @ Mindful Cuisine
The mountains and the sea come together for this cooking class loaded with Spanish flavor. What will you be making? Buckle up, folks. You’ll start with a cauliflower appetizer and a salad featuring spring’s favorite veggie, snap peas, with a romesco sauce and mint. And then for the main event “a classic Spanish version of “surf and turf,” a dish titled Mar y Montaña (sea and mountains) with chicken, Spanish chorizo, shrimp & mussels, piquillo peppers and seasonal vegetables served with saffron rice.” You still with us our have you gone to immediately sign up? Parents’ Survival Night

A break from the kids *and* a break from the parents – it’s a survival night for all of us. Parents can use the time to enjoy a movie or a quiet meal out while the kids get quality “kid time” in a safe, fun, place with trained instructors who lead them through music, games, and fun. As you might imagine, spots fill quickly, so book HERE.

Screening “Singin’ in the Rain”
7:30 PM @ Egyptian Theater
Consistently on the top movies of all time lists from basically every platform, “Singin’ in the Rain” is often billed as the greatest movie musical of all time. Whether you’ve seen it a million times or are introducing the newest generation, what better way to watch this classic than on the big screen in the classic Egyptian Theater on Park City’s Main Street? The film chronicles actors in the 20s as the transition from silent films to “talkies.” But truly, it has some of the most iconic dance numbers and judging by this weekend’s forecast—you may be singin’ in the rain too!

Park City Film: “Peterloo”

If you’re in the mood for something a little…darker than Singin’ in the Rain, Park City Film has the screening for you. The Amazon Studios film is “An epic portrayal of the events surrounding the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre, where a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St Peter’s Field in Manchester turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history.”

Saturday Morning Nature Walk

Start your weekend off on the right foot! Join a group of weekend-walkers and learn about the Swaner Preserve wetlands while you get some exercise – and look for an abundance of wildlife!

The Next Course: Make Ahead Camping Meals
11 AM – 1 PM @ Mountain Town Olive Oil
If you’re planning on camping this summer, your meals don’t have to be just hot dogs and s’mores (although any good campout needs at least one s’more. I don’t make the rules!) This week’s The Next Course class put on by Mountain Town Olive Oil will teach you how to make all these delicious dishes for your next camping trip:

Students will twist, tie, and dye their shirts, creating one-of-a-kind wearable art. One t-shirt per person is provided, and participants can bring up to two additional items to tie dye.

Summit County Community Garden Seedling Sale
10 AM – 1 PM @ Summit County Community Garden
The Summit Community Garden is holding its first annual seedling sale! Buying at the sale will ensure you’ve got the heartiest plants for Park City’s high-altitude mountain climate, as well as the best plants for the season.

Swaner’s Craft Sunday

Kids of all ages are invited to enjoy the complimentary Swaner Craft Sunday! Join the fun at the Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter, and create a nature-themed craft to bring home.

Climbing Wall
1 – 3 PM @ Swaner Eco-Center
Climb through the EcoSystem from the bedrock all the way to the uplands! The Swaner indoor climbing wall is fun for all ages. A harness is supplied, participants are asked to wear closed-toe shoes.

You may have a great GPS system but the best foundation for navigating is still an old-fashioned map and compass. Learn how to stay on course with L.L. Bean’s experts. This clinic may be held outdoors so please bring appropriate clothing.

Memorial Day Santa Maria Style BBQ

BBQ is a hallmark of Memorial Day but learn a new-to-you style of cooking over an open flame. Santa Maria style BBQ started in coastal California and dates back to the California Rancho days of the 1850s. Bring your camera! This class will teach you everything you need to know to get that perfect shot. It’ll cover shutter speeds, apertures, focal lengths and composition before heading out to a location to practice.

Feed the Bees: Perennial Pollinator Class

If you have a teenager, you’ve probably heard a “save the bees” joke or two. But there really is a lot you can do to help save the bees as well as other local pollinators. Learn what plants honey bees, native bees, butterflies, moths and hummingbirds find most nutritious and how you can build a thriving pollinator habitat with perennial flowers, herbs, trees and shrubs.

Firefly Exhibit

Parker Jones: From My Seat in the Dirt

Parker is an outdoor-focused illustrator and graphic designer, primarily based out of Park City, Utah. Initially trained as a landscape architect, his design style can be traced back to thousands of hours spent at the drafting table. Regularly drawing en plein air, his pieces are inspired by the landscapes, city scenes, and big rocks he’s come across while traveling. Through his sketchbooks, paintings, and hand-drawn collages he seeks to capture the subtly interconnected elements that create a sense of place.

Zhi Lin: Chinaman’s Chance on Promontory Summit

Internationally acclaimed artist Zhi Lin confronts the lost history of the Chinese workers who built our nation’s transcontinental railroads. This exhibition is presented during the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike, the ceremonial final spike to join the rails of the first transcontinental railroad.

The Chinese Helped Build The Railroad – The Railroad Helped Build America Exhibit

We’ve just celebrated the sesquicentennial anniversary of the joining of the Trans-Atlantic Railroad in Utah, learn more about the people who actually helped build it. From the library: “The Chinese Helped Build the Railroad. The Railroad Helped Build America” tells the transnational history of that railroad through past and present images of sites on a railroad line that required the labor of thousands of Chinese workers to complete.”

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

The Historic Preservation Board is looking for applicants! Each member serves a term of up to four years. The Board meets at 5:00 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month, meeting an average of 8-12 times per year. Applications are available at the Park City Planning Department at 445 Marsac Avenue and online here.The application deadline is Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at 5:00 p.m

The Colony at White Pine Canyon is the largest gated ski-in / ski-out community in the United States. Our land spans 4600 acres, and approximately 90% of it will always be preserved as open space.

Park City Mountain Opening Day: May 24, 2019

There are three seasons in Park City: Ski season, shoulder season, and SUMMER. Luckily, we are near the sunny-season mark (WE HOPE?!) – suntime-funtime life is now officially in full swing at Park City Mountain Village! Here’s an overview of what you and your family can enjoy starting today (Friday, May 24).

MOUNTAIN BIKING AND HIKING

Two of our favorite summer activities on the mountain are self-guided; lace up or velcro your preferred shoe, and take advantage of the miles of trails networking through Park City Mountain (some of them take you through The Colony, too!).

Mountain Biking: Shredding applies in summer, too, and the beauty of activities at the resort is that there are options for support if you need it! You can rent mountain bikes at the Village, then hop on Crescent or Pay Day Chairlift so you can focus on the downhill. Bike haul tickets are also available for purchase.

More from Park City Mountain:
Three lifts provide bike access during the summer at Park City Mountain and are centrally located amongst some of Park City’s most beautiful trails. The Payday lift will operate for early-season biking and hiking access beginning Friday, May 24 at the Park City Mountain Village.

On Friday, June 14, the high-speed four-passenger Crescent Lift will open for bike access and Payday lift will shift to scenic rides. Crescent Lift runs out of the Park City Mountain Village and unloads mountain bikers at access points for the IMBA recognized “Epic Ride” on the Mid-Mountain Trail.

The Red Pine Gondola at Canyons Village will also open on June 14 and provides access to miles of gorgeous cross-country biking and hiking trails.

Hiking: Whether you’re walking or running, the trails are equal opportunity stunners. Grab a trail map and escape in into the mountains – trekking through the trees is the perfect way to cool off on a hot day, and there are options for all levels of ability.

ALPINE SLIDE & ALPINE COASTER

Alpine Slide: More than 3,000 feet of WHEE!: PCM’s Alpine Slide is among the longest in the world. And with three tracks to choose from, each luge-like launch is a different experience.

Alpine Coaster: Prefer a mountain ride on rails? Buckle into the Alpine Coaster. The winding track slings you through more than a mile of mountainside; carving and looping at speeds up to 30 mph. And if you want to slow down and enjoy the incredible scenery, there’s an easy-to-reach brake on your coaster car.

ZIP LINES

If being above the treetops is more your thing, zip lines at Park City Mountain will make it happen. Relish the views at 110 feet off the ground, and enjoy the wind in your face as you’re propelled at speeds up to 45 mph. The Flying Eagle is a two-seater, and the ZipRider™is a fun chance to race your friends.

MINI GOLF & ADVENTURE ZONE

Catch your breath at the base of the Village and enjoy an 18-hole round of miniature golf. And if the kids want to see more action while you’re puttering around, there are seven other ways for you to tucker them out before it’s time to tuck them into bed.

Legacy Launcher – four trampolines (with safety harnesses) let the kiddos bounce all their energy out – and safely try tricks under supervision.
Kids’ Zip – avoid the too-small-for-the-big-zip-line meltdown and head straight here for full-scale thrills at a size that’s perfect for your little one.
Kids’ Rope Course – another age and size-appropriate way for kids to safely try some big challenges.
Boulders – the smallest climbers can experience Southern Utah terrain from the comfort of Park City.
Climbing Wall – safety climbing harnesses and trained attendants give kids a chance to explore scaling a big-time wall – with five different routes to try.
Kids’ Tubing – tubing is now a summer sport; no need for snow to experience this adventure!
Gem Panning – experience Park City’s mining legacy while you pan for gems in the interactive flume.

GOLF

Canyons Golf will open for the season on Friday, May 24. This 18-hole, par-70 course is located steps away from the Grand Summit Hotel, a RockResort at the base of Canyons Village and features over 550 feet of elevation change. Designed by renowned course architects Gene and Casey Bates, Canyons Golf offers a challenging and enjoyable course characterized by memorable shots and dramatic views.

Some of the most fun to be had in the summer is scoring local produce and products at the Park City Farmer’s Market and spreading out a picnic blanket and snacking while you listen to open-air mountainside music. Luckily, you’ll get to enjoy both of those experiences – along with a couple of new ones this year! – in just a few short weeks. Here’s the rundown from Park City Mountain:

Park City Farmer’s Market: June 12 – October 16
The Park City Farmer’s Market is a seasonal market held at the base of the Park City Mountain Village every Wednesday this summer from noon to 5 p.m. Open from June through October, the market showcases local Utah vendors and artisans with fresh produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods, crafts and more. Kids Adventure Games, June 14-15
Park City Mountain will host the Kids Adventure Games this June 14-15 outside of Red Pine Lodge at Canyons Village. Designed exclusively for kids ages 6-14, the Kids Adventure Games is a multi-discipline adventure race. Kids, in teams of two, compete together on bikes, in water and on foot through a challenging adventure course, featuring manmade and natural obstacles like zip lines, massive cargo nets, ropes courses, river tubing, giant slip-and-slides and more! Kids learn the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, problem solving, the importance of an active lifestyle and an appreciation for the outdoors.

Farm-to-Table Dinners at Legends, June 22, July 27, August 24, and September 28
Returning this summer, the talented chefs at Legends will offer a series of four farm-to-table dinners beginning in late June. The monthly prix fixe dinners will feature locally-sourced seasonal ingredients and showcase the creative talents of the chefs. Guests can enjoy the dinners al fresco in Park City Mountain Village while relaxing to the sounds of local musicians. Wine and beer pairing suggestions will also be available. Canyons Village
Canyons Village activities open on Friday, June 14 and include scenic gondola rides, cross country mountain biking, disc golf, hiking, Canyons Golf and putting course. More information here.

4^th of July Celebrations, July 3 – 6
Park City Mountain will host a series of events the week of the 4^th of July. Once again, the resort will host a 3^rd of July Celebration and Fireworks Show at Canyons Village on Wednesday, July 3. The following day, the resort will host the annual 4^th of July Celebration and City Fireworks Show at the Park City Mountain Village. Wrapping up the week, Park City Mountain will present a free concert at Canyons Village on Saturday, July 6. More information can be found here.

Summer Concert Series at Canyons Village, July 6 – August 29
Park City Mountain will host a series of free, live music concerts at Canyons Village on Thursday and Saturday evenings throughout the summer. Concerts begin on Saturday, July 6 on the Canyons Village stage and will feature performances from a mix of local, regional and national bands. Bands will play for approximately 90 minutes and guests are welcome to bring their own picnic, or enjoy food and libations at the Umbrella Bar, Murdock’s Café and The Farm Restaurant. Tour of Utah, Saturday, August 17
Returning this summer, Stage 5 of the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah will start and finish at the Canyons Village at Park City Mountain on Saturday, August 17. The Tour of Utah is a seven-day, world-class professional cycling race along the scenic byways of Utah and attracts worldwide attention as the top international cycling event that follows the Tour de France. As part of Stage 5, the Tour of Utah also offers a mass participation Gran Fondo – the Ultimate Challenge. The Ultimate Challenge will follow the roads that the pros will tackle on the final day of the seven-day stage race. The 93-mile Ultimate Challenge long route will include 8,300 feet of elevation gain and two major climbs. A shorter 43-mile option is also available with 2,080 feet of climbing. For the first time, both the start and the finish will take place at Canyons Village at Park City Mountain complete with a post-race concert, lifestyle expo and kids’ activities.

Oktoberfest, Friday, August 30 – Sunday, Sept. 1
Over Labor Day weekend, Canyons Village at Park City Mountain will transform itself into a mini-Munich to celebrate Oktoberfest, the German festival that is now a worldwide phenomenon celebrating Bavarian culture. The family-friendly event will kick off Friday, August 30 with the official opening ceremonies, followed by a weekend of celebration. The festivities will overtake Canyons Village as guests dressed in traditional dress enjoy the Bavarian celebration. Guests will be invited to enjoy German beer in the Bavarian Beer Hall, explore authentic fare in the Bavarian Market, listen to Oompah and Polka music, participate in traditional dance and stein lifting competitions, enjoy the Kinder Kids’ zone and much more. This weekend, we celebrate a decade of Running with Ed[ucation]! This annual spring race is a MASSIVE fundraiser for the Park City Education Foundation, which funds student and teacher programs in the Park City School District.

Over the last 10 years, the event has raised more than three million dollars! What started as a few hundred runners and a handful of volunteers has now grown to more than 1,500 runners and hundreds of volunteers. All of that money has been funneled right into more than 100 programs – which impact every single student in our school district.

So this Saturday, while you’re out and about, make sure to shout out and cheer on whichever teams you come across – bonus – most of them wear costumes, so you’ll be sure to know who’s participating in RWE! It’s a bit late to register, but the clock never stops for donations. More info HERE.

Great Salt Lake Bird Festival

This is the Great Salt Lake Bird Festival’s guided tour of the high-elevation wet meadows, marshes, riparian areas and uplands of Swaner Preserve. Tour will be led by expert birding guide, Vivian Schneggenberger. Registration is required to attend, and spots fill fast! More information HERE.

Bike to School Day and Bike Safety Demonstration

Riding bikes is a great way to get some exercise in while also helping our air quality. But for parents, sending your kids off to school on their bikes can be a little scary. This will give you and your kiddos the tools you need to make sure they are safe—and have a little fun too! From the website: “Start the day with a ride to school and receive snacks, drinks,and fun giveaways. Then join us for a youth bike safety demonstration given by the Sheriff’s Department with free BBQ and drinks, a bike safety obstacle course and swag. Peter Noone became famous at the age of 15 “Herman,” the lead singer of the legendary ’60s English beat rock band, Herman’s Hermits. You know his hits like “I’m Into Something Good” and “Mrs. Brown.” Fourteen singles and seven albums ended up going gold. Defensible Space & Biochar Talk and BBQ

Join Park City and the National League of Cities for a discussion about defensible space, designed to reduce fire danger, and about biochar and its benefits. Biochar is a carbon-dense, charcoal-like substance. It is created by “cooking” wood or organic matter, and, when added to the soil, can keep carbon out of the atmosphere for thousands of years.

After the discussion, guests can enjoy a BBQ gathering with hot dogs and marshmallows.

Family Wheel Throwing

I’m not a crier in movies. I just don’t, I don’t know why. But I would be lying if this one didn’t make me BAWL. I think we all felt every single emotion in this movie. As part of Mental Health Awareness month, The Park City Library and Connect Summit County are partnering to provide a free movie screening of Inside Out. The movie features Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness. It’s a great way to start a conversation with your kids about their emotions and how to navigate the growing and complicated feelings they have.

Park City Film: “Long Night’s Journey Into Day”

After apartheid in South Africa, the country still had a long way to go when it came to reconciliation. Those who enforced and perpetuated the practice wanted amnesty, but their victims wanted justice. This documentary follows four cases that went before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. As it investigated the crimes of apartheid, the Commission brought together victims and perpetrators to relive South Africa’s brutal history. By revealing the past instead of burying it, the Commission hoped to pave the way to a peaceful future.

“West: A Translation” with Paisley Rekdal, Utah’s Poet Laureate

Last week, we celebrated the sesquicentennial of the completion of the Transatlantic railroad with a huge event at Promontory Summit. But the celebrating isn’t over yet! Utah’s Poet Laureate (did you know we had one of those?!) will perform a new poem and the railroad, commission by the Utah Arts Council and Spike 150.

Parker Jones: From My Seat in the Dirt

Parker is an outdoor-focused illustrator and graphic designer, primarily based out of Park City, Utah. Initially trained as a landscape architect, his design style can be traced back to thousands of hours spent at the drafting table. Regularly drawing en plein air, his pieces are inspired by the landscapes, city scenes, and big rocks he’s come across while traveling. Through his sketchbooks, paintings, and hand-drawn collages he seeks to capture the subtly interconnected elements that create a sense of place.

Zhi Lin: Chinaman’s Chance on Promontory Summit

Internationally acclaimed artist Zhi Lin confronts the lost history of the Chinese workers who built our nation’s transcontinental railroads. This exhibition is presented during the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike, the ceremonial final spike to join the rails of the first transcontinental railroad.

Fine, it’s definitely not spring weather yet but we are going to pretend like it by wearing sandals even when it’s only 36º outside! A couple of signals that tell us it *is* actually May: the Summit Community Garden is opening, and the Park City Follies is on stage. FRIDAY, MAY 3

Clinic: Apps for the Outdoors
5 – 6 PM @ L.L. Bean
A new clinic from L.L. Bean in Park City! This one will guide you on the best apps to use to make your outdoor experience even better. They’ll also show you apps for navigation, weather tracking, speed tracking, photography, video, healthy living, natural history information and much more. iPhone and Androids alike welcome.

Put on by Park City Film, “Gloria Bell” stars Julianne Moore as a free-spirited divorcee, Gloria, who spends her days in the office and nights on the dance floor. “Join Recycle Utah for the annual “Pride in Your Park” community cleanup event on Saturday, May 4. Volunteers should meet at various locations around town LL Bean on Main Street, City Park, PCHS, The Winter School, Swaner Nature Preserve, Jeremy Ranch Park & Ride and Pinebrook Park at 9 AM to join a crew to pick up trash and recyclables in Park City’s parks, waterways, roadsides, and fields. The clean-up will last until noon. Both trash bags and recycling bags will be provided. Volunteers are asked to bring their own gloves and reusable water bottles.”

Like CPR – but for mental health. Learn the questions you need to ask to understand a mental health crisis, and then what to do next. Three simple steps could help save a life from suicide. Training is provided by Shelley Worley and Alyssa Mitchell from the Summit County Health Department; you’ll find the class in the auditorium; light refreshments will be served.

The Chinese Helped Build The Railroad – The Railroad Helped Build America Exhibit

As we get ready to celebrate the sesquicentennial anniversary of the joining of the Trans-Atlantic Railroad in Utah, learn more about the people who actually helped build it. From the library: “The Chinese Helped Build the Railroad. The Railroad Helped Build America” tells the transnational history of that railroad through past and present images of sites on a railroad line that required the labor of thousands of Chinese workers to complete.”

You may have actually opened your windows or hit the street for a walk around your neighborhood before dinner this week – spring is slowly creeping in, and no surer sign of that than CLOSING DAY at the Park City ski resorts. Both Park City Mountain and Deer Valley close for the winter season on Sunday, April 7.

Closing day is followed by the start of spring break for the Park City School District, and there are quite a few fun options to keep the kids busy while they’re out of school – read on!

An after-school program to encourage kids to explore art. Kiddos get to try a variety of fun materials and drop-ins are welcome; the 30 dollar fee includes instruction, supervision, and all materials. Wasatch Mountain Film Festival

Utah’s Gigantic Landslides Lecture

“Utah is home to the largest terrestrial landslide known in the world, a gigantic mass of volcanic rock in south-central Utah that collapsed and moved rapidly over the landscape 21 million years ago called the Markagunt gravity slide. Snowshoe Tour of the Preserve
8:30 – 10 AM @ Swaner Nature Preserve
Learn about wetland science, natural plant and animal species, and the history of the Swaner Preserve; search for and identify animal tracks and other signs of animal life. Be sure to wear sturdy, warm boots, snow pants, hats, gloves, a coat, and bring a water bottle. Snowshoes can be rented from the EcoCenter – $2.50 for members, $5 for non-members.

Bilingual Story Time

An interactive bilingual storytime full of books, songs, fingerplays, and rhymes in both English and Spanish. This program is designed to stimulate language development through the exciting sounds of Spanish for beginners and native speakers alike!

Animal Boxes with Visiting Artist Suzanne Fluty

“Using basic hand-building techniques, students will learn how to simplify animal characteristics to create uniquely whimsical animal trinket boxes. Surface decoration using various slip applications and sgraffito will also be explored. This two-day workshop is $200 and includes materials.”

23rd Annual Pond Skimming Competition

The Annual Pond Skimming Competition begins at 12:00 noon on April 6, 2019. The event is free for all spectators, but spectators must provide their own lift access of the Red Pine Gondola via an Epic Pass, lift ticket, or foot passenger gondola ticket.

This camp runs from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the MARC, and is limited to 20 kiddos (ages 6 – 12) per day, and includes the following activities:

Monday→ Getting to know you games, MARC Ninja course, dodgeball, playground play
Tuesday→ Provo Beach; surf, ropes course, bowling
Wednesday -→Jump Jam at the Wairhouse
Thursday→ Sugar House park play, visit Tracy Aviary

Nature’s Ninjas

Kids and adults can explore “some of nature’s wildest defensive adaptations.” The exhibit takes a look at nature’s most misunderstood animals — everything from porcupines to geckos — and walks visitors along how and why animals develop their unique natural defenses.
