Park City Event Guide: February 8 – 10

February 9, 2019 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

It’s another event weekend here in Park City – with finals scheduled for snowboard halfpipe, freestyle moguls, freeski halfpipe, dual moguls, and snowboard slopestyle in the FIS World Championships. The event is the biggest ski and snowboarding competition our state has hosted since the 2002 Winter Olympics, and most of the events are taking place at Park City Mountain and Deer Valley Resort.

In fact, the event is SO big that a number of eateries in the Park City Area Restaurant Association have joined forces to create special offerings to those participating in – and enjoying – the events. Check here for specials from places like The Twisted Fern, which is offering a free starter (with the purchase of two entrees) at lunch during FIS, Harvest Park City, and Silver Star Cafe.

“Sprung from the comic book pages and crypts alike, celebrated French graphic novelist Arthur de Pins’ characters come to life, or er, undeath, on the big screen with a wickedly wry story of monster liberation. Challenges abound when amusement park Zombillenium is threatened by a corporate buy-out. Fortunately, high-minded ghoul dad Hector, tenacious witchboarder Gretchen, and a collective cohort of zombies rise up and fight in true French form for worker rights—above and below ground—in this clever genre and monster mash up. Recommended for ages 10+.

Presented in French with English subtitles in partnership with Park City Library.”

They will lead workshops in city and county government offices, schools, and other non-profits, developing community resources and connections. The week culminates in a Main Stage performance – equal parts wit, whimsy, empowerment, and inspiration.”

Rising to fame in 2006 following the success of his debut album, Food & Liquor, Lupe has released six acclaimed studio albums; his latest being Drogas Wave, released in 2017 on his own label, 1st & 15th. These albums have netted 3 platinum singles, 3 RIAA Gold Certifications, 12 Grammy nominations and one Grammy Award in 2008 for his infectious single, “Daydreamin,” feat Jill Scott. With a trilogy of albums set for 2018 and beyond, Lupe is at his creative peak as an artist. Park City Special Event: Sundance 2019

January 23, 2019 by Molly Miller, Colony PR

Tens and tens – and tens – of thousands of people will attend the 2019 Sundance Film Festival this year, with venues spread across Salt Lake, Sundance Resort, and, of course, right here in our very own little Park City. More than 40,000 people will make our town their basecamp for the festival, and you’re likely already experiencing the impact in your daily life.

TRAFFIC IMPACT & ALERTS
The 10-day event starts off with an influx of humanity, which leads to packed streets, restaurants, and venues. With this combination, things are bound to get jammed up. Sign up for alerts from the Festival and the City by texting FILMFEST to 888777. Notifications about traffic, closures, weather, and emergencies will be sent out.

There are, of course, parking closures, changes, and alternatives right off the bat. The image below, from the City, shows where those are.

Now more than ever, Park City’s free public transportation system is the most efficient way to navigate the crowds! If you are doing the film routes, make sure to utilize the Sundance shuttles, as there is no public parking at Festival theaters or venues — and no parking of any kind on Main Street. And – be aware – parking at China Bridge is $40/day – and that’s without re-entry.

SKIING DURING SUNDANCE
One big bonus during Sundance – it’s some of the best skiing of the year! The mountains are relatively open since most of our visitors are watching screens instead of hitting the slopes. Take advantage of it while you can!

In fact, at Deer Valley this weekend (Saturday, January 26, 20019), first-time local skiers can sign up for the Ski Utah Learn to Ski Program. For $49, you get a lesson, a lift ticket, ski rental equipment, and a locker for storage. That is a SMOKIN’ deal! (Reservations must be made prior to January 26, 2019, by calling Deer Valley Resort at 435-645-6648, referring to “Ski Utah Learn to Ski Program.”)

THE FESTIVAL
This year, more than 14,200 film submissions were received, a record-breaking number, and the applicants represented 152 countries. From those, 112 feature-length films were selected to be screened, with 33 countries represented and 45 first-time filmmakers.

There are quite a few guides to be found, and if you’re a diehard Sundancer, chances are you’re already wearing your lanyard and your docket is full. For the rest of us, Park City Magazine has created “Sundance for the Casual Festival Goer.” With tips like focusing on early and late screenings, taking advantage of Townie Tuesday, and enjoying Best of Fest (our personal favorite way to enjoy Sundance – you’re just about guaranteed to enjoy a terrific film and it’s not too crowded), it’s worth scanning the list.

OFFSCREEN
There are about a million and two things to do offscreen – and these are just the official Sundance events! There are dozens and dozens of panels: Power of Story, Cinema Café, New Frontier Panels, Festival Panels, and Partner Panels; music options, parties, private screenings, and so. many. Sundance. sponsor. activities.

ASCAP MUSIC CAFÉ
The ASCAP Music Café celebrates how absolutely critical music is to the movies, and “honors the love affair between music and film with eight days of performances from artists and songwriters you need to know (and some you already know).” The Café is open to all Festival credential holders (ages 21+).

Whether you get out of town for the first Fest weekend or are here and cursing the traffic, keep in mind that nearly 125,000 people attended last year’s Festival → which generated $191.6 million (!) in economic activity for the state of Utah, and supported more than 3300 local jobs. It may not make waiting on 224 any less annoying, but it certainly does its part to keep our economy strong!

Keep track of Sundance:

  • The Sundance Film Festival official app
  • The Park Record’s special section on the Festival

The 2020 Sundance Film Festival will take place January 23 – February 2, 2020.

Park City Film: “A Private War”
8 PM @ Jim Sandy Auditorium

From the Park City Film website:
Based on the extraordinary life of Marie Colvin, “A Private War” is brought to the screen by Academy Award nominee and critically acclaimed Matthew Heineman in his pulse-pounding narrative feature debut. In a world where journalism is under attack, Marie Colvin is one of the most celebrated war correspondents of our time. Colvin is an utterly fearless and rebellious spirit, driven to the front lines of conflicts across the globe to give voice to the voiceless, while constantly testing the limits between bravery and bravado. Her mission to show the true cost of war leads her — along with renowned war photographer Paul Conroy — to embark on the most dangerous assignment of their lives. The Colony at White Pine Canyon is the largest gated ski-in / ski-out community in the United States. Our land spans 4600 acres, and approximately 90% of it will always be preserved as open space.
In winter, enjoy exclusive ski and snowboard access to one of North America’s largest mountain resorts, Park City Mountain. In spring, the snow melts to reveal an amazing network of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, connecting to more than 400 miles of single-track trails throughout the surrounding area.
The Colony is just 35 minutes from Salt Lake International Airport and 5 minutes to Park City’s historic Main Street, home to the Sundance Film Festival and world-class dining and shopping.
