Park City Event Guide: January 11 – 13

January is marching right along, with plenty of snow to keep things looking fresh. Things have quieted down a bit after all the holiday hullaballoo, but there are still plenty of fun, family-friendly things to do in and around Park City. Here’s this weekend’s Event Guide!

Friday, January 11

Wines & Mines Tour
1 – 4 PM 

A three-hour tour of historic Park City locations — all paired with great wines. The tour begins at Park City Library, “with an overview of the feud that brought mining to Park City, while we enjoy a vintage sparkling wine made for the king and queen of Spain.”

Next, the group climbs aboard a luxury bus for stops vehicle for our other stops at the Ontario Mine, Miner’s Hospital, First National Bank on Main Street, Silver King Consolidated HQ, and the Red Light District.

Wines are chosen for each stop by Kirsten Fox, Headmistress and executive sommelier, and are paired with light snacks.

Deer Valley Aprés

Live music is a huge part of the experience at Deer Valley for aprés ski beverages and snacks. Silver Lake Lodge is located mid-mountain, near the ski beach. You’ll find the Edgar Beer and Spirits (EBS) Lounge on the second floor of Snow Park Lodge, at the base of Deer Valley.

Snowshoe Tour
8:30 – 10 AM
Swaner Nature Preserve & EcoCenter

This tour is packed full of fun: learn about wetland science, natural plant and animal species, and the history of the Swaner Preserve, search for and identify animal tracks and other signs of animal life. Be sure to wear sturdy, warm boots, snow pants, hats, gloves, a coat, and bring a water bottle. Snowshoes can be rented from the EcoCenter – $2.50 for members, $5 for non-members.

Climbing Wall 
1 – 3 PM @ Swaner Eco-Center 

Climb through the EcoSystem from the bedrock all the way to the uplands! The Swaner indoor climbing wall is fun for all ages. A harness is supplied, participants are asked to wear closed-toe shoes.

Get moving and mindful on Main Street with 60 minutes of Vinyasa Yoga Flow at The Paint Mixer, followed by delicious apps, local wine, and community at Old Town Cellars. Both locally-owned businesses are located right at the bottom of Town Lift, in the heart of Old Town, Park City. Yoga will be led by Jess McCurdy, founder of Fit 4 Life Park City. $35 includes your 60-minute yoga class, appetizers at Old Town, and entry into an opportunity drawing for a uniquely Park City gift (must be 21; wine is not included).

Park City Nonprofit Highlight: People’s Health Clinic

According to the latest Census data, 9.5% of people living in Summit County are without health insurance. Even for healthy and financially secure people, a health emergency can spell disaster. People’s Health Clinic is looking to help bridge that gap.

The clinic is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit which offers low- and no-cost care to patients. It is funded entirely by donations from residents, organizations, and grants from local governments. 

The clinic provides preventative care and chronic illness support to residents of Summit and Wasatch counties who are not insured. The clinic reports 97% of its patients are employed in at least one job – and many have several. They are the workers who keep our tourism business running — working at hotels, restaurants, resorts, retail, and construction. Vital jobs to the economy…but jobs that rarely offer health benefits. Most of these jobs pay enough that employees don’t qualify for Medicaid – but don’t pay enough to pay health insurance premiums. And, a little-known fact about the PHC, most patients do also contribute money toward their care. 

And here’s the thing: many health issues can be addressed more easily and for far less money if they are simply caught early. This is something the clinic works hard to address.

In fact, PHC was recently recognized by the Utah Million Hearts Coalition for its commitment to helping people manage blood pressure. One in three adults in this country has high blood pressure and only about half of those people have it under control. High blood pressure can lead to heart disease…which costs a whole lot more to manage than blood pressure. The clinic was one of just 91 clinics across the state who earned the recognition.

The clinic also offers general health, women’s health, pediatric care, mental health and helps people figure out how to address and take care of chronic issues. It will also refer patients to places which can offer reduced cost diagnostic tests like CT and MRIs. They offer free mammograms to women over 40. They also help refer people to job services and help people figure out how to find and acquire medical insurance.

A quick look at a few numbers: the clinic operates on a roughly $843,000 budget. This is funded mostly by grants and private donations (Park City, Summit County, and Wasatch County governments also provide funding).

In 2017 — the clinic diagnosed 250 people with diabetes. In 2018, the clinic provided 9,855 patient visits and 243 patients with medications. These services add up quickly, with values reaching into the millions of dollars. But still far less than people would spend relying on emergency services.

Of course, the clinic is always looking for donations, but it is also looking for volunteers to help manage some of the overhead costs. Even if you don’t have medical training, there are opportunities to help in the office, as well as interpreting, as many of the clients speak Spanish. Only two of the providers at the clinic are paid, the rest are volunteers.

In an op-ed for Park Record, one provider said the clinic currently has a wait time of over a month and they hope to bring that down to a week. She said “a few more physician and non-medical volunteers would go a long way! If you are a physician or just a caring individual or have a friend or neighbor who you can spread the word to, come on in for a tour and consider joining our team. Your time could not be better spent.”

It’s Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month here in Utah. This means, all month long, you’ll find beginner learning deals from both the resorts and from a number of retail shops. Also on tap for the first month of the new year – the final days of Snowfest at Park City Mountain, and another round of First Friday Fireworks!

Artful Afternoons

A fun Friday after-school activity for kids (ages 6 through 10). Participants get to explore art using a variety of fun materials each week. This week, build in 3D: kids will engineer structures out of bamboo, cardboard, and other materials. Drop-ins are welcome!

This is the second –and final– weekend for the Park City High School’s lacrosse teams’ Christmas-tree-pickup event.

Saturday evenings bring fire performances from 7 to 10 p.m. (these also happen on Friday nights). 56th Annual Torchlight Parade

One of Park City Mountain’s most special and longest-running traditions! The Annual Christmas Eve Torchlight Parade is a tradition as old as the resort itself. The fun begins at 5:30 p.m., in the Park City Moutain Village Base area. There will be holiday music and complimentary cookies, treats, and hot cocoa.

The parade begins at 6, and that’s when the magic turns up to an 11.
Park City’s ski and snowboard instructors carve down the mountain, lit torches in hand, to lead Santa Claus in a festive procession to town.

This week, when you ride public transportation in Park City and Summit County, not only do you help the environment –and enjoy a free ride!– you could be a lucky recipient of a gift card for a local business.  

Park City and Summit County Council members will be handing out the gifts as a thank you for riding transit — and a few lift tickets to Park City Mountain and Deer Valley resorts will also be in the mix! 

There will be a few more Try Transit Week opportunities this winter, where again – if you ditch your car to take the bus to school, work, or to ski, you’ll have the chance to win fun prizes. You’re encouraged to share your transit experience on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook by using the hashtag, #IRideParkCityTransit.

We are fewer than two weeks away from Christmas, and this weekend is the big one, when the big guy himself makes his way into town in the most quintessential Park-City way possible.

Local Artisanal Holiday Market
4 – 8 PM @ Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter

This weekend, zip over to Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter for another event loaded with unique gifts and holiday festivities. Art Elevated is a collaboration between Swaner, Park City Summit County Arts Council, and Park City Professional Artists Association.

The annual market runs Friday through Sunday, with absolutely gorgeous, one-of-a-kind items –all created by 20 local artists and artisans– for the buying! Choose from paintings, photos, books, jewelry, ceramics, fabric, textiles, and sculpture. 

In addition to shopping, there will be live music, entertainment, and featured demonstrations. For example, on Saturday, from 11 – 2, you can enjoy “Fine Cholocates and Fanciful Confections” from Tandem Chocolates, which will be followed by a “Festive Fiddle” performance.

Celebrate Christmas with Grammy Award-winning Country Music Hall of Famers at DeJoria. The songs are a mixture of traditional and contemporary songs—including religious, romantic and fun holiday tunes. 

Park City Community Singers
7 PM @ Park City Community Church

This is the final Christmas concert from Park City Singers. This year, there are more opportunities for the audience to sing along with the choir, which is an all-volunteer community group.

Snowshoe with L.L.Bean
7 – 10 AM @ Quinn’s Junction

L.L.Bean Park City is leading a snowshoe at Round Valley, at an easy to moderate activity level. Participants for this free event are encouraged to dress for the weather, and to bring snowshoes!

Snowshoe Tour
8:30 – 10 AM
Swaner Nature Preserve & EcoCenter

Learn about wetland science, natural plant and animal species, and the history of the Swaner Preserve, search for and identify animal tracks and other signs of animal life. Wear sturdy, warm boots, snow pants, hats, gloves, a coat, and bring a water bottle. Snowshoes can be rented from the EcoCenter – $2.50 for members, $5 for non-members.

Holiday Family Yoga
3 – 4 PM @ The Shop

The 9th Annual Family Holiday Yoga class, with Randi Jo. Yoga, mindfulness, music, dancing, storytelling, and journaling. All ages are welcome – no yoga experience is necessary. (This class has a suggested donation of $10 each or $25 for a family of four.) (This will repeat as a Family Yoga class each Saturday at The Yoga Shop.) 

Toddler Time
11:30 AM @ Summit County Library (Kimball Jct.)

This is the perfect time for 2-3-year-olds to wiggle! Slightly more advanced bouncing, singing, dancing and giggling with a couple of picture books thrown into the mix. Check the library website for many more children’s programs and events.

Enjoy a delicious breakfast with the big guy to fuel up for the Christmas Market shopping and activities.

Gingerbread Houses I & II
10 AM & 1 PM @ Kimball Art Center

Create your own gingerbread house from the ground up! You’ll use icing, graham crackers, candy and more – but register early, because, as you might imagine, this is a pretty popular class. (Also, be sure to let KAC know if you have any food allergies ahead of time.) There will be a couple more gingerbread house classes this season: Monday, December 17 and Tuesday, December 18

Santa Comes Down Town Lift
5:30 p.m. @ Town Lift Plaza

THIS is the holiday event that so many of us have been waiting for! Ok, well, so many of us with little ones. But if you don’t have any to bring, don’t let that stop you from this magical Park City tradition. Here’s the schedule of events:

  • 5:30 PM → Complimentary hot cocoa, holiday cookies & community cheer
  • 5:30 PM → Live Music by Paul Cave
  • 6 PM → Santa Arrives! Watch him ride down Town Lift in a lighted chair, er, sleigh
  • 6 PM → Pictures with Santa; be sure to bring your Epic Pass for easy connection to your account

Figure Skating Holiday Show
4:30 – 7 PM @ Park City Ice Arena
Figure Skating Club of Park City

This fun family event at the Park City Ice Arena will be full of ice skating and holiday music. Skaters include members of the Figure Skating Club of Park City, Park City Icing Synchronized Skating Teams, and Park City Ice Arena Professionals.

Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rides with Santa
Homestead Resort & Soldier Hollow

A horse-drawn sleigh ride with a stop at the North Pole to spend some time with Santa! There are a couple of options for the experience (run by Rocky Mountain Outfitters), one at the Homestead Resort and the other at Soldier Hollow.

Homestead Resort:
Hop on this horse-drawn buggy or sleigh ride around one of Utah’s oldest running resorts. Homestead is nestled in Heber Valley, just outside of Midway. From the website:

“Our beautiful teams of Clydesdales, Belgians, and spotted draft horses will pull you through a nice scenic view of Heber Valley as well as breathtaking views of the Wasatch Mountains. We have buggies, wagons, and sleighs to accommodate groups of all sizes.”

Sleigh rides run from 3:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Daytime sleigh rides are also available, and you’re invited to call to inquire: 435-654-1655.

Soldier Hollow:
Bring your family and a bunch of friends anytime through December 22nd. This horse-drawn sleigh ride takes you right to see Santa himself! All Santa sleighs are group rides, and in the event of inclement weather or due to any lack of snow, sleighs will be swapped for horse-drawn wagons. Sleighs can seat up to 12-14 people, and run from 2:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.

The Great Christmas Adventure
Heber City

This is a whole new Christmas activity, put on by a local production company called Popcorn Media. It’s described as a walking and riding theatrical experience. From the website:

Elfer-cize, design snowflakes, and spread holiday cheer by singing loud for all to hear!  Wrap and deliver presents. Bake pretend cookies and decorate REAL cookies!

Then, eat your cookie design as Mrs. Claus and the elves share our new, favorite Christmas story with you!

Meet Santa and Journey Home on “The Elf Express” Christmas Train
Finally, meet Santa!  Tell him what want for Christmas and take as many pictures as you’d like!  Then, climb aboard “The Elf Express,” our elf-sized-indoor-train and journey back home.

The entire experience takes about an hour, and the entire experience is actually INSIDE (which means warm coats aren’t necessary).

Experience the art of chocolate first-hand at this one-of-a-kind event at The Paint Mixer! Park City Institute presents an evening with this father and son who are working together to change the way America thinks about addiction. Their bestselling memoirs are the basis for the 2018 film, Beautiful Boy, starring Steve Carrell, and Timothée Chalamet.
