I currently reside with my family in Park City, Utah I began playing piano and singing at a very young age and continued for years until I took a break to become an internationally ranked Mountain Bike racer. I then retired from racing in 2003 and came back to music.” This concert held on the patio at Legends.

Sundance Institute: “Top End Wedding” Screening

Jupiter Peak Steeplechase

Challenge yourself (or come cheer on the racers) for the second stage of the “Triple Trail Series.” This Park City favorite draws elite athletes as well as weekend warriors to test the limits of a course with an elevation profile that resembles an inverted “V” (for vertical!). A 16-mile loop from Park City Mountain Resort (7,000 feet above sea level) to the top of 10,000-foot Jupiter Peak and back down.

Screening: The Footballest

This Spanish film, shown with English subtitles, tells the story of Francisco and his closest friends—who play on a soccer team that has reached its lowest point. They’ve got to win one of the next three games to keep the school from cutting their team altogether and replacing it with a choir! A series of strange events take place in the first two games. Coincidence? Conspiracy? This is an adaptation of the popular Spanish children’s-book series “Los Futbolisimos” by Roberto Santiago.

International Summer Film Series: Bend it like Beckham

Every Tuesday, Park City Film and the library are offering a free film (and popcorn!) as part of the School Break Film Series. This week, come see the UK’s Bend it Like Beckham– A comedy about bending the rules to reach your goal, Bend It Like Beckham explores the world of women’s football, from kick-abouts in the park to freekicks in the Final. Set in Hounslow, West London and Hamburg, the film follows two 18 year olds with their hearts set on a future in professional soccer. Especially timely after the amazing USWNT World Cup win!!

Composting Lunch and Learn

Bring your lunch to this free class to learn the basics about composting from Recycle Utah. You’ll learn what materials can be composted and the supplies needed to maintain it, as well as tips to keep compost piles fresh and active. Plus—you’ll go over the benefits of composting, including saving valuable landfill space, reducing waste, and improving soil structure. All attendees will also get 10% off composting bins from Recycle Utah.

Author Meredith Jordan will be talking about her experience writing this book about what goes on behind the scenes of a major motion picture. She spent 5 months on the set of “Last Vegas” with stars like Robert de Niro and Morgan Freeman. But the book focuses more on the people behind the camera, the director and a huge cast of artists and artisans, designers and creators, overseers, office and logistical support. The book follows the real people behind the scenes as they make the movie, stopping along the way to explain process with a little help from history.

Plant Night

Those of us who may love having plants around the house but have a bit of a black thumb may benefit from this class—designed to help even the most helpless, hapless wannabe gardeners. You’ll build and create a one-of-a-kind terrarium in a 6″ open glass bowl with succulents, sand, pebbles, moss, and other decorative items of your choosing. Learn how to create and keep a healthy terrarium with all necessary supplies included!

Utah Olympic Park is open for the summer season.
Learn about the park’s beginnings in the free museum or take a ride on the summer bobsled. The park’s summer experiences include the extreme zip line, zip line tour, alpine slide, drop tower, adventure courses and scenic chairlift rides (not all activities are open early season). Early season hours 10 a.m.–6 p.m. daily. Be sure to catch the Flying Ace All-Star Ariel Show every Saturday and Sunday at 1:00.

A Chorus Line

Running through the 21st, this Tony and Pulitzer winning musical tells the story of 17 dancers hoping to make their big break on Broadway.

Wasatch Back Student Art Show @ Kimball Art Center
In this exhibit through July 7th, see art from k-12 students from Summit and Wasatch counties. They were invited to create art around the theme “storytelling”. More than 500 artists participate in this annual exhibit.

John Hess: Permutations @ Kimball Art Center
From the Kimball Art Center “John Hess is a mixed media textile artist with an interest in exploring dimension, either with double woven cloth shaped into relief with an armature for stability or flat woven fabric using pattern and fabric paint to create illusions of depth. Using patterns, either woven or painted, he expresses color modulations while repeating with scale changes and mirrored effects.” The exhibit is open through July 16th. 

Walking Tours of Historic Main Street
Every weekday 2 PM @ Park City Museum
Spend an hour walking down Historic Main Street, learning about the city’s growth from a mining town to a ski destination. The tours take place every weekday until August 30th. The tours will leave the Museum every day at 2. call 435-649-7457 ext. 136 to make a reservation. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and don’t forget your sunscreen!

Patios, Pools & the Invention of the American Backyard
Through November 20 @ Park City Museum
This exhibit, part of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, shows the history of the American backyard—from pools to lawns, to BBQ grills. From the Park City Museum “Through rare photographs, historic drawings, and period advertisements, Patios, Pools, & the Invention of the American Backyard explores the mid-century backyard of the 1950s from the rise of the suburbs and tract houses and the beauty of postwar garden design to the birth of the environmental movement.”

A JOURNEY FOR THE AGES

The current Colony Master Plan started to evolve in 1992. But the real story began when John George Condas arrived at Ellis Island in 1903 and headed west. He settled in Utah and was one of the region’s providers of food for the large mining population. Park City’s cool summers offered an ideal habitat for Condas’s large sheep herds and they wandered the hills from June to November. It has been critical to the project that the Condas family legacy lives on today. The developer and each new Colony owner are committed to being good stewards of the land, through the master planning, where the landscape remains the inspiration, and through the philosophy that “less is more.” Historical landmarks of the Condas family settlement can be found throughout the development and a number of sites have remains of small sheepherders’ shelters. There are also quite a few massive aspen trees carved with the previous inhabitants’ initials–dating back to the early 1900s–documenting their presence.

The devotion to this land is such that nearly 90% of the development’s 4,600 acres will remain pristine and untouched open space, protected with preservation easements. Current offerings average more than seven acres per lot, the largest to be found within just about any private, gated, ski-in/ski-out community in the world.

Can you believe summer is passing by so quickly? As June comes to a close, there *are* still a few days to hit the slopes (on your skis): Snowbird plans to be open through July 4, so bust out your skiing tank tops and get out there before the resort shuts it all down.

Of course, with the 4th of July comes not hours – but DAYS of celebrations and activities here in Park City. A complete guide to July 3 and 4th activities are headed your way early next week, but for now, here’s what’s on tap this weekend!

FRIDAY, JUNE 28

Summit Yoga at Montage Deer Valley

Every Friday, an in-house fitness and wellness specialist from the resort will guide an hour-long meditation and yoga session on the lawn, overlooking the Wasatch Mountain Range.

Snowbird Resort plans to be open through the 4th of July so head out this weekend, get some early morning skiing in and then head down the mountain for a huge adventure festival and outdoor gear sale. An after-school program to encourage kids to explore art. Kiddos get to try a variety of fun materials and drop-ins are welcome; the 30 dollar fee includes instruction, supervision, and all materials. From PCMR’s website “Three-time mayor of Park City and beloved local activist, Dana Williams takes the stage as a solo artist, performing acoustic rock music. Living legends Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, forming members of Jefferson Airplane, bring their bluesy fusion of rock, free rhythmic techniques, and a collected timbre of instruments to our intimate stage.

Parents’ Survival Night

This group puts on a passionate and talented show of musical talent.” Concert will take place on the PayDay Pad in the Park City Mountain Village.

Utah Museum of Fine Arts in the Wild: Leaf Prints
1 PM @ Wasatch Mountain State Park Huber Grove
At this free event, join the Utah Museum of Fine Arts at Wasatch Mountain State Park Huber Grove to discover the science behind the color of leaves and traditions of leaf printing.  You’ll get to try out hammering leaves on fabric in this cool art form.

Legends Farm to Table Dinner

Your Barn Door is Open

The iconic McPolin Farm (a.k.a. “the white barn”) hosts a family-friendly evening of dancing, music by Sin City, and eats courtesy of Spencer’s BBQ. There’s no parking at the barn, but the city is running a free shuttle from the Park City Municipal Athletic & Recreation Center. Tickets are $30 (free for children 5 and under) and are available at the MARC.

Marie Osmond with the Utah Symphony

This group will take audiences through Mexican Folk, Rock and Roll, Tex-Mex, Latin Rock, and Reggae-Cumbia music. They play stringed instruments, percussion and sing in both English and Spanish.

Tent Tales for Tykes

Storytime at Park City’s L.L. Bean store on Main Street. Ideal for kiddos 3-6, during each weekly session, they’ll explore a different nature theme and then play a game or do a craft. You can join in on the fun or spend the hour shopping but you do have to register HERE.

International Summer Film Series: “The Fox and the Child”

Every Tuesday, Park City Film and the library are offering a free film (and popcorn!) as part of the School Break Film Series. The Number Ones

What a fun concept! This group is a cover band that only covers songs that have hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. But you won’t just hear the same song you’ve heard a million times on the radio. Fusing the most popular songs in America with improvisational aspects of jazz and jam bands, TNOs provides a unique listening experience in which no song is ever the same twice.

ONGOING EXHIBITS 

Utah Olympic Park is open for the summer season. You can learn about the park’s beginnings in the free museum or take a ride on the summer bobsled. The park’s summer experiences include the extreme zip line, zip line tour, alpine slide, drop tower, adventure courses and scenic chairlift rides (not all activities are open early season). Early season hours 10 a.m.–6 p.m. daily. Watch the Flying Ace All-Star Ariel Show every Saturday and Sunday at 1:00.

Wasatch Back Student Art Show @ Kimball Art Center
In this exhibit through July 7th, see art from k-12 students from Summit and Wasatch counties. They were invited to create art around the theme “storytelling”. More than 500 artists participate in this annual exhibit.

John Hess: Permutations @ Kimball Art Center
From the Kimball Art Center “John Hess is a mixed media textile artist with an interest in exploring dimension, either with double woven cloth shaped into relief with an armature for stability or flat woven fabric using pattern and fabric paint to create illusions of depth. Using patterns, either woven or painted, he expresses color modulations while repeating with scale changes and mirrored effects.” The exhibit is open through July 16th. 

Walking Tours of Historic Main Street
Every weekday 2 PM @ Park City Museum
Spend an hour walking down Historic Main Street, learning about the city’s growth from a mining town to a ski destination. The tours take place every weekday until August 30th. The tours will leave the Museum every day at 2. call 435-649-7457 ext. 136 to make a reservation. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and don’t forget your sunscreen!

Patios, Pools & the Invention of the American Backyard
Through November 20 @ Park City Museum
This exhibit, part of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, shows the history of the American backyard—from pools, to lawns, to BBQ grills. From the Park City Museum “Through rare photographs, historic drawings and period advertisements, Patios, Pools, & the Invention of the American Backyard explores the mid-century backyard of the 1950s from the rise of the suburbs and tract houses and the beauty of postwar garden design to the birth of the environmental movement.”

We’d like to hear from you, Park City! Take the Park City Vision 2020 community survey and apply to participate in July’s Think Tank Workshops

Park City has launched Park City Vision 2020 – a community visioning project asking residents and business owners to share their perspectives on:

  • What makes Park City the place that people wish to call home?
  • What makes Park City special and what should Park City become?
  • What are the elements of the community that, if lost, would fundamentally change the character of Park City?

Park City Vision 2020 will be a 6-month community visioning project to define a Park City Community Vision and Action Plan, as a follow up to the 2009 Park City Community Visioning project.

There will be several opportunities to get involved throughout the visioning process now through October.

Park City Event Guide: June 14 – 20

People often think of Park City as a winter playground. Having the “greatest snow on earth” will do that to a reputation. But our two world-class resorts don’t just become ghost towns during the summer months! This week, Canyons Village at Park City Mountain Resort opens, with a ton to do for adventurers of any age and sensibility, from serene scenic lift rides to mountain biking trails that will have you gritting your teeth and praying to make it down to the bottom of the mountain in one piece.

Screening + Panel Discussion: “The Quiet Force”

This screening and panel discussion is part of the Latino Arts Festival in conjunction with Park City Film. From the Park City Film website “The Quiet Force, investigates the human and economic impact of Latinx immigrants living in Western ski towns – where they comprise 30 percent (or more) of the local population.” The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Diego Zegarra, Social Equity Director of the Park City Community Foundation; John Mejia, Legal Director, ACLU-Utah; Edwardo Estrada, local business owner, and Ivonne Timar, manager of Flanagan’s on Main and parent of PCSD students. Rob Harter, Executive Director, Christian Center of Park City, will moderate.

An Evening with Leo Kottke

Parents’ Survival Night
6 – 9 PM @ The Little Gym Park City
A break from the kids *and* a break from the parents – it’s a survival night for all of us. Parents can use the time to enjoy a movie or a quiet meal out while the kids get quality “kid time” in a safe, fun,  place with trained instructors who lead them through music, games, and fun. Historic Home Tour

Utah has some incredible historic homes and every time I drive by, I just think “I just want to take a peek inside, just really quick!” Well here’s your chance to see some historic miners’ cottages in the Park City Museum’s annual showcase of some of the most beautiful homes on Woodside and Park Avenues. Eat Your Heart Out
All day @ Boneyard, Wine Dive, No Name, & Butcher’s Chop House
Eat at any of the four participating restaurants on Saturday and 10% of your order will go to People’s Health Clinic. People’s Health Clinic is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing no-cost quality care to the uninsured residents of Summit and Wasatch Counties.

Wasatch Back Student Art Show
10 AM @ Kimball Art Center
In this exhibit through July 7th, see art from k-12 students from Summit and Wasatch counties. They were invited to create art around the theme “storytelling”. More than 500 artists participate in this annual exhibit.

John Hess: Permutations
Noon @ Kimball Art Center
From the Kimballl Art Center “John Hess is a mixed media textile artist with an interest in exploring dimension, either with double woven cloth shaped into relief with an armature for stability or flat woven fabric using pattern and fabric paint to create illusions of depth. Using patterns, either woven or painted, he expresses color modulations while repeating with scale changes and mirrored effects.” The exhibit is open through July 16th.

Art Pianos for All Pop-up Concert
1 PM @ Coalville City Hall
Artists from both the Utah Symphony and the Utah Opera Resident Artist program will perform at the Art Pianos for All public art installations.

Village Live Music: BD Howes
3 PM – 6 PM @ Park City Mountain Village
From PCMR’s website “Howes’ tunes are an acoustic classic Rock’ sound of originals and a nice dusting of cover tunes. B.D. Howes is a musician with a history in the Intermountain and east coast music scene. Howes has graced stages along the Wasatch front for years, played at several festivals, winter and summer concerts around Utah. His beautiful melodies gliding arrangements and drift away vocals provide easy unobtrusive listening.” The concert will take place on the PayDay Pad in the Park City Mountain Village.

Plein Air Paint Out
3 PM @ Park City Nursery
While my favorite type of “al fresco” is “dining,” more than 40 landscape artists will demonstrate painting en plein air at the Park City Nursery’s beautiful gardens. Paintings are available for purchase. Plus, there will be light appetizers. For more info, go HERE gallerymar.com

Climb through the EcoSystem from the bedrock all the way to the uplands! The Swaner indoor climbing wall is fun for all ages. A harness is supplied, participants are asked to wear closed-toe shoes.

Village Live Music: Kate Vogel

From PCMR’s website “Kate Vogel is a local singer-songwriter. She performs music ranging from original songs to covers from artists like John Denver, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Eagles, and Brandi Carlile to the Rolling Stones, the Plain White T’s, Johnny Cash and John Mayer. She favors the genres folk, Americana, rock, and acoustic.” The concert will take place on the Legends patio at Park City Mountain Village.

International Summer Film Series: “Selena”

A free screening of the biographical musical drama about the life and career of Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, a recording artist well known in the Latino communities in the United States and Mexico. Screening (and popcorn!) are free.

Bee Keeping 101

From the community garden website “Bee Keeping 101 will teach students how to get started raising bees, from setting up a hive, the clothing, and equipment needed, to practical tips for common diseases and challenges. Stop by and pick up fresh fruit for a mid-hike snack, a bundle of organic vegetables for your family dinner, or locally made jams, jellies, trinkets, or jewelry to take home as a souvenir each Wednesday from 12:00 – 5:00 PM. Not only does buying local food help our community, it also helps our environment by reducing carbon dioxide emissions and packing materials, as well as helping to make farming more profitable.

Music on the Patio: Voices in the Hills

Voices in the Hills will feature a wide array of talented singer songwriters from throughout the state of Utah and from as far away as Nashville.
