Park City Event Guide: June 14 – 20

People often think of Park City as a winter playground. Having the “greatest snow on earth” will do that to a reputation. But our two world-class resorts don’t just become ghost towns during the summer months! This week, Canyons Village at Park City Mountain Resort opens, with a ton to do for adventurers of any age and sensibility, from serene scenic lift rides to mountain biking trails that will have you gritting your teeth and praying to make it down to the bottom of the mountain in one piece.

Also of note this weekend – the Latino Arts Festival this weekend – an event which gets bigger and bigger every single summer. It’s hosted jointly the Christian Center of Park City and the Park City Summit County Arts Council.

FRIDAY, JUNE 14

Summit Yoga at Montage Deer Valley

Every Friday, an in-house fitness and wellness specialist from the resort will guide an hour-long meditation and yoga session on the lawn, overlooking the Wasatch Mountain Range.

Kids Adventure Games at Park City Mountain Resort

From the Adventure Games website: Designed exclusively for kids ages 6-14, the Kids Adventure Games is a multi-discipline adventure race. Kids, in teams of 2, compete together on bike, in water, and on foot through a challenging 2.5-4-mile adventure course, featuring man-made and natural obstacles like zip lines, massive cargo nets, ropes courses, river tubing, giant slip-and-slides and more!

Skills Clinic → Friday, June 14

Artful Afternoon

An after-school program to encourage kids to explore art. Kiddos get to try a variety of fun materials and drop-ins are welcome; the 30 dollar fee includes instruction, supervision, and all materials. Lego Club

An hour of Lego BLISS. The Park City Library hosts this every week for builders of all ages. Duplos for the younger architects, IKOS for the master builders and lots and lots of LEGOS for everyone in-between.

Village Live Music: Sophia Dion
4 PM – 7 PM @ Park City Mountain Village
Sun’s out, outdoor concerts out (That’s what the kids are saying, right?) From PCMR’s website “Sophia Dion was a budding star before she reached her teen years and she possesses a musical presence that defies her age. Just 17 years old, Sophia is already a true rising star. Uniting indie, soul, blues, and pop influences, Sophia’s singer/songwriter musical style has been influenced by KT Tunstall, Jason Mraz, Ingrid Michaelson, Joss Stone, Sara Bareilles, and Allen Stone.” This concert held on the patio at Legends.

Food, music, crafts, art, dance and more. The Latino Arts Festival is co-hosted by the Christian Center of Park City and the Park City Summit County Arts Council. Did we mention it’s free?

Mariachi is a type of musical group originated in Mexico; the groups wear distinctive charro suits and the music is composed using trumpets, violins, and guitars.

Screening + Panel Discussion: “The Quiet Force”
8 PM @ Park City Library
This screening and panel discussion is part of the Latino Arts Festival in conjunction with Park City Film. From the Park City Film website “The Quiet Force, investigates the human and economic impact of Latinx immigrants living in Western ski towns – where they comprise 30 percent (or more) of the local population.” The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Diego Zegarra, Social Equity Director of the Park City Community Foundation; John Mejia, Legal Director, ACLU-Utah; Edwardo Estrada, local business owner, and Ivonne Timar, manager of Flanagan’s on Main and parent of PCSD students. Rob Harter, Executive Director, Christian Center of Park City, will moderate.

Parents’ Survival Night

John Hess: Permutations

From the Kimballl Art Center “John Hess is a mixed media textile artist with an interest in exploring dimension, either with double woven cloth shaped into relief with an armature for stability or flat woven fabric using pattern and fabric paint to create illusions of depth. Using patterns, either woven or painted, he expresses color modulations while repeating with scale changes and mirrored effects.” The exhibit is open through July 16^th.

Not only does buying local food help our community, it also helps our environment by reducing carbon dioxide emissions and packing materials, as well as helping to make farming more profitable.

Park City Nonprofit Highlight: People’s Health Clinic

According to the latest Census data, 9.5% of people living in Summit County are without health insurance. Even for healthy and financially secure people, a health emergency can spell disaster. People’s Health Clinic is looking to help bridge that gap.

The clinic is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit which offers low- and no-cost care to patients. It is funded entirely by donations from residents, organizations, and grants from local governments.

The clinic provides preventative care and chronic illness support to residents of Summit and Wasatch counties who are not insured. The clinic reports 97% of its patients are employed in at least one job – and many have several. They are the workers who keep our tourism business running — working at hotels, restaurants, resorts, retail, and construction. Vital jobs to the economy…but jobs that rarely offer health benefits. Most of these jobs pay enough that employees don’t qualify for Medicaid – but don’t pay enough to pay health insurance premiums. And, a little-known fact about the PHC, most patients do also contribute money toward their care.

And here’s the thing: many health issues can be addressed more easily and for far less money if they are simply caught early. This is something the clinic works hard to address.

In fact, PHC was recently recognized by the Utah Million Hearts Coalition for its commitment to helping people manage blood pressure. One in three adults in this country has high blood pressure and only about half of those people have it under control. High blood pressure can lead to heart disease…which costs a whole lot more to manage than blood pressure. The clinic was one of just 91 clinics across the state who earned the recognition.

The clinic also offers general health, women’s health, pediatric care, mental health and helps people figure out how to address and take care of chronic issues. It will also refer patients to places which can offer reduced cost diagnostic tests like CT and MRIs. They offer free mammograms to women over 40. They also help refer people to job services and help people figure out how to find and acquire medical insurance.

A quick look at a few numbers: the clinic operates on a roughly $843,000 budget. This is funded mostly by grants and private donations (Park City, Summit County, and Wasatch County governments also provide funding).

In 2017 — the clinic diagnosed 250 people with diabetes. In 2018, the clinic provided 9,855 patient visits and 243 patients with medications. These services add up quickly, with values reaching into the millions of dollars. But still far less than people would spend relying on emergency services.

Of course, the clinic is always looking for donations, but it is also looking for volunteers to help manage some of the overhead costs. Even if you don’t have medical training, there are opportunities to help in the office, as well as interpreting, as many of the clients speak Spanish. Only two of the providers at the clinic are paid, the rest are volunteers.

In an op-ed for Park Record, one provider said the clinic currently has a wait time of over a month and they hope to bring that down to a week. She said “a few more physician and non-medical volunteers would go a long way! If you are a physician or just a caring individual or have a friend or neighbor who you can spread the word to, come on in for a tour and consider joining our team. Your time could not be better spent.”

More than 90 vendors have set up shop at This is the Place Heritage Park, and they’re selling everything from traditional German gifts to hand-crafted toys, ornaments, jewelry, and more! Not only that, there are children’s activities and entertainment (like a live nativity!) at the market, which has been a tradition in Salt Lake since 2012. The Christkindlmarkt is open Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.

A fun holiday tradition to enjoy – or to begin! – is a ride to the North Pole! The 90-minute (round trip) train ride includes hot cocoa and chocolate chip cookies, made by Mrs. Claus, of course. Families will get to sing along to Christmas songs and enjoy entertainment from the elves and the hosts.

The story of Colette, who married a successful Parisian writer. In an interesting turn of events, her husband convinces her to ghostwrite for him, and the novel (which she wrote in a semi-autobiographical way) is a smash. The couple becomes the talk of Paris and she writes additional novels. Of course, the clash comes when Colette begins to chafe against creative ownership and societal constraints.

The Art and Science of Arachnids
Swaner Preserve & EcoCenter
Wednesdays – Sundays: 10 AM – 4 PM

This exhibit is seriously catching people in its net – and it just so happens to be the largest arachnid exhibit in the United States.

The exhibit guides visitors to explore connections between arachnids and literature, art, folklore, paleontology, science, and history. You’ll see 100 live arachnids (!) and experience hands-on activities – hopefully, the live arachnids are not the hands-on activities, but you’ll have to go see it in order to find out. INSIDER TIP: They feed the spiders on Thursdays – so that is a great time to go see some action.

Park City Nonprofit Highlight: Christian Center of Park City

Around the holiday season, the philanthropic nerve is often struck in even the stingiest of Scrooges by an onslaught of Hallmark and Netflix Christmas movies and those fabulous Christmas songs that hit us deep in the heart. We donate to food drives, buy toys for less fortunate families and drop some change in the bell ringers red kettles. But what about the rest of the year? Working steadfastly through all of the seasons are places like the Christian Center of Park City.

The CCPC is a humanitarian needs center aimed at meeting the physical and emotional needs of people in Summit and Wasatch counties. It runs a food pantry, offers counseling to members of the community and meets all sorts of seasonal needs, like school supplies, holiday gifts and more. A person’s religion, race, gender or ethnicity does not matter. Everyone is welcome to receive –and give– help at the CCPC.

18 years ago, the center opened as a way to meet people at their point of need. It did that in one office, expanding to two – and now it operates out of a freshly built community center at the same location. After a two and a half year renovation, the new center opened just recently—doubling in size. The new space offers more office space, an expanded counseling center, and a new warehouse where donations for center’s thrift shop are stored. The food pantry got an update as well.

In 2014, the CCPC Food Pantry gave away more than $1.5 million in food to families throughout the county. People who need it can come get food twice a month, no strings attached. It serves the elderly, veterans, families, singles, seasonal workers and any other person trying to stay afloat. The new pantry is set up to look more like a store, empowering its patrons to make the best choices for them and their families, as opposed to just taking what is handed to them.

The pantry accepts donations of food or supplies from the community. To find out what is needed right now, you’re invited to give them a call. But, because quite a bit of the food donated to food banks can go uneaten if you really want to make an impact, donate money. Your dollar goes A LOT farther with a donation directly to food organizations, because food banks are able to buy food at wholesale prices.

The CCPC also employs trained counselors to meet with people, regardless of ability to pay. In the new building, 20 counselors can meet with people at once, instead of the previous space, which accommodated just two.

The executive director of the center, Rob Harter, told the Park Record that expanded mental health services became even more of a priority after our community lost two 13-year-old boys to overdoses a few years ago. The counselors cover a variety of mental health needs, from marriage counseling to anxiety and depression, to eating disorders. Some of the professionals are trained in a therapy called EDMR, which is shown to have positive impacts on people with PTSD or other trauma-related stress. The center works with many insurances and also offers financial aid to people who need the service but may not be able to afford it. Some of the counselors are also bilingual.

This time of year, the center collected 850 turkeys for Thanksgiving and will continue to gather gifts for the holidays. Operation Hope allows parents to shop for holiday gifts for their children, picking out the perfect toy to open Christmas morning, as well as filling in some of those needs, like a warm winter coat. Operation Hope is in need of donations and volunteers right now.

And as the center expanded, so did the cost of the building. By the time it opened a few weeks ago, the center had gone nearly $2 million over budget. An anonymous donor has come forward, pledging $1 million if the center could also match it. So if you want to make an impact that will last throughout the year this holiday season, the Christian Center of Park City may be a good place to start.

Nonprofit Highlight: Park City Film

“You can’t be what you can’t see.”

Marian Wright Edelman, Founder, and President of the Children’s Defense Fund, said that in the documentary Miss Representation. She was speaking about getting girls involved in tech. But that quote kept popping into my mind as I learned more about Park City Film. Film—whether it’s a documentary, drama, comedy or animated feature for kids—is an easily accessible medium that for 2 hours gives you a glimpse into what it is like to be someone else. Sometimes it’s just to entertain but often, it can change our perspective of the world around us.

Park City Film started more than 25 years ago as a way to provide Park City and the greater Summit County area access to film that may not be available at the local multi-screen theater. Originally Park City Film Series, the nonprofit went through a rebranding this summer. It is now so much more than just a film series that organizers were worried all of the other programs were getting lost in the name. It is now Park City Film, which better encompasses all the things it does now to bring film to the community.

Park City Film will screen “Free Solo” November 23, 24, & 25.

For example, later this month, the organization will show Free Solo at the Jim Santy Auditorium. Most of us—ok, let’s be real, none of us, are going to scale the El Capitan cliff face without a rope. But for 100 minutes you can see how climber Jimmy Chin prepares for this incredible feat of physical achievement. Maybe that can inspire you to accomplish a (hopefully less dangerous) goal you have in your life.

Tickets are way less expensive than your traditional theater. You can buy tickets online now; $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and students. (And, if you buy them in person and have an EBT card, you can access whole other worlds for just $3.)

“The Mask You Live In’ will be shown November 15 as part of the Reel Community Series.

Park City Film also offers free films in the Reel Community Series. The goal of its longest running program is to deepen “understanding of complex, diverse and sometimes challenging, topics…We select films that reflect not only the mission of our partners, but also the interests of our community – with a focus on creating a platform for engaged and inclusive community conversation.” The free films are put on in conjunction with local nonprofit organizations and are paired with a panel discussion or Q&A after.

On November 15th, Park City Film will show the documentary “The Mask You Live In” for free, followed by a panel discussion. The film looks at the way media and culture have created an environment of toxic masculinity that tells men and boys they must act a certain way in order to be a “real” man. This is just one of the many upcoming documentaries that will have you talking the whole car ride home—and hopefully beyond.

Many of the upcoming Reel Community Series films are great conversation starters for families, but Park City Film also wants to help you foster a love of film in the kids in your life. During the school holidays, Park City Film offers free afternoon showings of classic movies to give kids a safe, fun and enriching place to spend a few hours when school is not in session. It also offers free screenings of foreign films for kids and books that were turned into movies, inspiring a love of literature and film.

This is just a small slice of all the programs Park City Film brings to the community. There truly is something for everyone—even people who think independent film is pretentious. Especially for people who think independent film is pretentious.

In November and December, settle into a cozy chair with a big bowl of popcorn (and treats from the toppings bar!) to see life through the eyes of a notorious bank robber, or four theater-turned-Hollywood actresses, or the rock stars of high school science fairs. A good movie can change your opinion, your perspective, maybe even your life.

Park City Nonprofit Event Highlight: Live PC Give PC

$2,026,917. That’s how much money the community of Park City raised last year –in 24 hours!– to benefit more than 100 local charities. That’s a lot of money! And the Park City Community Foundation is hoping to top that this year with its annual online giving event, Live PC Give PC, coming up Friday, November 9th.

This year, the Park City Community Foundation has a special charge from the city, as it was just named Social Equity Community Convener for Park City. This means – the organization will facilitate between local nonprofits, advocates, and partner organizations, while it seeks out needs within the community, and figures out the most strategic way to meet those needs.

“The goal of this work is to make Park City a community where opportunity is accessible to all. We plan to connect people to this effort in a meaningful way so that we can make real and systemic change. We look forward to uniting Parkites with diverse social, economic and cultural backgrounds in the efforts to create a complete community,” says Katie Wright, Executive Director of Park City Community Foundation.

The Foundation began in 2007, and this year marks the 8th annual Live PC Give PC event. In the first year, the 24-hour long event raised more than $300,000 from 1500 donors. Fast forward to last year–$2,026,917 from 4,123 donors. This year, more than 160 organizations are signed up to participate, and the Community Foundation set a goal of 4,500 unique donors.

From children’s art organizations to sports teams to environmental organizations to animal rescues—there is an organization working towards something you’re passionate about. The sheer breadth of organizations is incredible!

Can’t decide on *just one* organization? No worries – the Park City Community Foundation this year wants you to spread the love! In the past, the organization had monetary goals for the Live PC Give PC event. This year, it will measure success by how many individual donors participate. AND – the organizations with the most donors will receive grants from local companies. Vail Resorts | EpicPromise |Park City Mountain is offering $2500 to the nonprofit with the most individual donors. 2nd prize–$1500, and 3rd prize–$1250. There are several other organizations that will make your donation go further; you can see those here.

The Park City Community Foundation works year-round to maximize the impact of Park City’s annual day of giving. To ensure participating nonprofits are equipped to participate across all mediums, it offered training on how to secure matching donors, how to best utilize social media, and more. This is information those organizations can use well beyond this Friday to continue to do as much good for their beneficiaries as possible.

And make sure you post to social media to encourage your friends to donate to the groups you connect with most by using the hashtag #LivePCGivePC. Click on that hashtag too, to see which organizations are matching when, and for the notifications for the three “power hours.” That means at the announced hour, a Power Hour Booster Challenge will begin, and Vail Resorts EpicPromise and Park City Mountain will add $20 to the next 200 unique donors’ online donations – each and every one! Donors who have given earlier but give again during those challenges can still be counted as unique donors.
