Community Spotlight:
STOKE COACH

My name is Rachel Friedman Elberts and I am a Certified Personal Trainer, Outdoor Fitness Guide, Healthy Living Advocate, Adventure Concierge, and Activity Facilitator otherwise known as The Stoke Coach.
I create custom outdoor fitness experiences and wellness programs to help erase the barrier to entry into the outdoors and to help people feel strong and confident in their bodies, creating space to live life in radical amazement by implementing the elements of Green Exercise (exercising outdoors, hiking, walking, running, etc) Mindfulness, and Gratitude that will not only improve physical and mental health, but also stimulate learning, creativity, and a sense of being fully alive!

I believe life is meant to be enjoyed and that moving our bodies should not be a chore. It’s about creating a cycle of enjoyment where you are pumped to functionally train your body to be strong and confident for the activities you love to do or want to try, and then you go do these activities and feel like you’re a total badass, and as a result, you want to continue training to feel capable and energetic as life continues to roll on.

The store highlights its customer service and provides high-end rentals and demos for everything you need to ski, snowboard, snowshoe, mountain bike, cruiser bike, and paddleboard. Not only that – it has a graduated rental program for the littlest skiers, a hit with the locals, for those who frequently outgrow the smallest of skis and boots.
The store not only prides itself on providing unmatched customer service and experiences; it’s also a pretty cool place to work. Don’t just take our word for it – its retention rate speaks for itself. Employees stick around for *years* – and it’s no wonder. Staffers are all
One of the best features of the store is its tradition of a shop pup. It started with Vidalia, the French bulldog, not the onion. Patrons of the shop loved Vidy (her easier to say nickname) that they started asking for gear with her mug. They came up with a design featuring her face for their cycling team jerseys and quickly sold out of those and t-shirts with the design. Tallulah the bulldog joined the family next, and most recently, little Azalea. Sweet Tallulah passed away last month (Vidy passed away in 2016), and now
You’ve seen them all before–the semi-tacky souvenir t-shirt in every airport newsstand, museum gift shop, and boardwalk souvenir shack. You can find basically the exact same shirt in any city across the country. As unique as all cities are, shouldn’t its souvenirs reflect that—for tourists and locals alike?
Despite zero experience in apparel design, he and partner Alex Lowe taught themselves to screen print and started testing out some designs. They sold products at local markets and started to gather a following. In 2016, they opened up the Motherlode storefront on Main Street. The shop carries unique apparel – items you definitely won’t find at other stores – and is perfectly representative of the city’s vibe.
And beyond the pre-designed apparel, about half of Motherlode’s business is doing custom work for clients; they’ve even helped us with projects here at The Colony!
They can also transfer images on to a shirt—perfect for gifts or other small orders. Motherlode has clients all over the city, from Freshie’s to St. Regis. Oh, and, it’s worth mentioning that the t-shirts they sell are the softest, most comfortable we’ve ever come across.
Let’s back up.
So she got to work. Hollye didn’t have any sewing or fashion experience but she bought some fabric and put together a prototype. She worked with several different manufacturers before landing on a factory in Mexico that gave her the product she wanted while also maintaining good conditions for its workers. And it wasn’t just her preference that went into building this purse. She interviewed more than 100 women to determine what exactly they wanted from an everyday bag.
Hollye says she was able to work on this project after her (now three!) children went to bed. And, while it took a bit longer with those hours, she says she wouldn’t have done it any other way. Being a working mom has allowed her to teach her daughters about running a business as well as being creative themselves. She
Jess is a mom of four boys. Like so many women, she battled postpartum depression after the birth of her first son. Her doctor suggested she try running. She had her son in November and made it her goal to run her first half marathon in August. She didn’t win by any stretch — but she did finish! She says that began a new passion for distance running and fitness and that she found community and support through her running friends. Her goal is to bring that same sense of community to her clients. It doesn’t matter where you are in your fitness journey. Jess will work with you to create goals that fit your body and lifestyle. Fitness is about improving all aspects of your life—not making it harder!
You’ll get videos with workouts and yoga plans. You’ll also get weekly calls with Jess to help coach you through the next week. And these programs aren’t just about exercise. She will provide you with tasty and easy meal plans to make sure you’re taking in the nutrients you need to power your workouts. Each training program also has a private Facebook group, where you can share your progress and encourage others also participating in the program.
And because fitness isn’t just about your physical health, Jess also wants to provide a place for her students to connect with each other. After all, she credits the camaraderie she developed with other distance runners as the thing she needed to push through wanting to quit while preparing for her first half marathon. When you sign up for a Bootcamp punch card, you get access to her classes at The Paint Mixer as well as a Facebook group where everyone can post recipes, goals, and words of encouragement.
