Michelle Obama Visits The Colony

The Colony was excited to be host to a recent visit from the First Lady, see story for full report and repost from www.KSL.com.

July 26th, 2011 @ 2:33pm

By Lisa Riley Roche

PARK CITY — First lady Michelle Obama arrived in Utah this morning to host a quick fundraiser for her husband’s re-election campaign at a private home.

She did not make any public appearances before leaving the state early in the afternoon for another campaign event in Aspen, Colo., on her way home to Washington, D.C.

The fundraiser for President Barack Obama was held at the home of Mark Gilbert, a major Democratic fundraiser who served on Obama’s 2008 finance committee.

Gilbert helped convince then-candidate Obama to visit Utah in August 2007 for a fundraiser. The now-president also appeared then at an impromptu campaign rally at Kimball Junction.

The first lady campaigned in Utah for her husband in February 2008. Then, she spoke to supporters at the Salt Palace and met with leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

State Democratic Party Chairman Jim Dabakis said the first lady wowed the crowd at the fundraiser, telling them she hopes to return to Utah soon with time for a public appearance and another meeting with LDS Church leaders.

“She comes off as astonishing,” Dabakis said.

About 200 people attended today’s fundraiser, paying at least $1,000. Contributors were urged to give well beyond the $5,000 federal campaign contribution limit, to help the Democratic National Committee and other organizations.

Former USA Olympic bobsledder Ivan Radcliff, now a neighbor and friend of Gilbert, was among the contributors. He said it was the first time he’d given to a political campaign.

“I’ve very excited to be able to meet the first lady,” Radcliff told reporters before headed up to the gated community where the event was being held. He said he didn’t have any particular message for Michele Obama. “Just to be able to say hello and get a handshake is going to be awesome,” Radcliff said.

The Gilbert home is located in the exclusive Colony at White Pine development near the Canyons Ski Resort. Guests were ushered through a gate next to a man-made waterfall into the private community.

A motorcade arrived just before 9:15 a.m. off state Route 224 and headed up towards the event. But instead of the first lady, police were escorting about a dozen children from the Christian Center of Park City.

The children were lining up just outside the gated community to wave to the first lady. The center sponsored an event earlier today marking Michelle Obama’s efforts to curb childhood obesity.

The first lady, who was almost two hours behind schedule, drove quickly past the children in her own motorcade about 11:15 a.m. to join the fundraising participants, who’d already been there for several hours.

Another, smaller group of area residents gathered at the turnoff off state Route 224 tried to get a glimpse of the first lady as the motorcade whipped by. She was not visible behind the tinted windows of the vehicles, however.

“I understand. It’s a security thing,” retired paralegal Sue Razzetti said. She spotted the news media gathered for the event earlier in the morning and returned with a flag to wave.

“I just wanted to be here to show my support, and that I’m with her and the president all the way,” Razzetti, a Park City resident, said.

PARK CITY, Utah (For Immediate Release from Canyons, Tuesday, June 7, 2011) – As temperatures rise and the snow melts at Utah’s largest ski resort, Canyons is transforming itself into a summer playground with new activities that bring together people of all ages to enjoy the best of Park City. Complementing the wide array of existing summer experiences, the new program features fast-paced adventures at the mountain bike park and zip line circuit; nature excursions at the high alpine reservoir and European-style hiking program; and opportunities for families and guests to bond over miniature golf , world-class dining and signature events.

“Our guests came to expect a high standard from us this winter as they enjoyed our many on-mountain enhancements and we’re delighted to continue these exciting changes into our summer season,” said Mike Goar, Managing Director, Canyons. “The new programming represents our vision of the perfect Park City summer experience, which we hope will create memories that extend long after our guests’ time at the resort.”

The new summer programming is an extension of the re-creation project that rolled out this winter and will officially launch for the 2011/2012 ski season. The new look and feel of the resort includes the most technologically advanced heated chairlift in North America, a new base gathering area called Ski Beach, 300 acres of new terrain and seven new restaurants. The transformation of Canyons provides a truly authentic four-season experience for all audiences; from young professionals to adventurous families, Canyons is the smartest choice for mountain experiences in the U.S.

Mountain Biking

This summer will mark the first phase of a new mountain bike park. Accessed off the High Meadow chair lift located at the Red Pine Mid-Mountain Adventure Area, the new park will offer three wide trails with smooth, gravity-focused riding for all abilities that complement the existing network of cross-country trails throughout the resort.

Zip Line Circuit

Another high-speed adventure new to Canyons this summer is the unique zip line circuit. This one-of-a-kind family experience features two thrilling zip lines, gondola and chair lift rides, and short hikes for a wide-ranging mountain adventure. With two zip lines that stretch more than 2,100 feet with a 10 percent grade and 800 feet with an 8 percent grade, the first phase of development for the new zip line circuit is an exciting addition to Canyons’ summer programming.

Boating

Also located a brief walk from the Red Pine Adventure Area is the 20 million-gallon reservoir that is transformed into a high alpine gathering area. Guests will be able to rent paddle boats or simply relax with a picnic lunch in a stunning mountain setting.

Guided Hiking Program

Canyons will launch a new European-style hiking program this summer as well. Local guides will introduce guests to the beauty of the Wasatch Mountains with hikes throughout the extensive network of trails within the resort as well as overnight trips to nearby Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. With gourmet lunches and snacks along for the hikes, these adventures will showcase the beauty of the natural setting.

Miniature Golf

The Resort Village area will be transformed into a fun-filled miniature golf course. This 18-hole mountain-themed course will extend throughout the Resort Village where parents can join the action or watch the game while dining alfresco at nearby world-class restaurants.

Dining

With the experienced team at the Talisker Restaurant Collection behind all of Canyons restaurants, guests this summer can enjoy the high standards of-mountain cuisine they came to expect during the winter. Restaurants open for the summer season include The Farm for locally sourced seasonal cuisine, Red Tail Cafe for southwestern-inspired dishes, The Restaurant at Waldorf Astoria Park City for fine dining in the tradition of the iconic hotel brand, and Red Pine Lodge for a classic American menu. Sister restaurant Talisker on Main in downtown Park City offers a “taste of Talisker” through cuisine and unrivaled service.

Events

Canyons hosts a series of signature events in its Resort Village, including the Park City Farmers Market every Wednesday, July 3 concert and fireworks with the The Soulistics, the Saturday Evening Concert Series, and the Grand Tasting Event of the 7th Annual Park City Food & Wine Classic.

About Canyons

Canyons, a Talisker mountain destination, offers 4,000 acres of exceptional skiing and snowboarding terrain across 9 peaks, 182 trails, 5 world class lodging properties including 35,000 square feet of flexible meeting space and a variety of dining options. Summer’s not going to be fashionably late this year—she’s already sneaking in. The trails are greening up, wildflowers are stretching, and the puffy coats are officially in storage. Who’s ready for long hikes and longer days?
